Imagine if every child could live their dreams... If every child and young person was supported to develop the social skills, resilience, networks and confidence to flourish as active, engaged citizens. If every family had the confidence and understanding to support their children to learn and achieve. If the dreams and ambitions of every young child could be nurtured to sustain them through to training or university as a young adult. If every pupil had an equal chance of gaining the qualifications needed for employability regardless of family income, gender, ethnicity or hometown. The education system should be our best way of ensuring equality of opportunity for all. Social Investment in Education, The Young Foundation 2013
All it takes is a little bit of team work... Young people acquire the skills and experience they need through a range of different influences. Family, friends and peers, their community, clubs and school. They are all important to a child s development and we must not focus too much on one at the expense of the others. Not all of these influences are positive and some are relied upon more heavily than others. For some of the most disadvantaged it is their school that is the driving factor, yet they only spend 17% of their time there. By working together, we can develop an education system that creates active, informed, engaged and empowered citizens with the skills and capabilities for the 21 st Century. We are currently preparing students for jobs that don t yet exist... using technologies that haven t been invented... in order to solve problems we don t even know are problems yet. Karl Fisch and Scott McLeod, Shift Happens
A holistic approach... Overcoming educational inequality will not be solved easily or quickly. Qualifications alone form a narrow basis for a happy, fulfilled life. We believe young people need a wide range of skills and capabilities to think creatively, collaborate, empathise and be resilient in the face of the opportunities and challenges that life throws at us all. We call these skills and capabilities the Four C s: Character & resilience Context Content Contacts The Young Academy is here to support the development and growth of social ventures that work with young people to build the Four C s.
07 08 Character & resilience same conclusion: character counts. Baroness Claire Tyler, The All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Mobility 2014 A young person s ability to apply themselves to tasks, their self awareness and direction, self control, confidence and ability to empathise with others. Improving a young person s social intelligence and emotional resilience skills has been shown to be one of the most effective ways to improve their long-term chances. Context with some. IPPR 2013 What young people have done in their lives, where they have been and the experience they have accumulated matters. Making sense of these experiences and knowing how to apply them in the real world can be a critical success factor.
09 10 Content make ends meet. But the children of poor families with high aspirations do better at school than those whose parents and teachers expect little of them. Sir Michael Wilshaw, Ofsted The academic and vocational skills and qualifications young people have acquired through formal education and additional study. Nationwide children from disadvantaged backgrounds continue to underperform their peers in exams. We know that poverty doesn t have to equate to poor qualifications. Contacts Who young people know and develop relationships with, who they feel comfortable interacting with, asking for advice and help from, or working alongside. Many young people don t realise the power and scale of the networks they already have. We need to do more to empower them with the confidence to identify, broaden and use these networks to achieve their ambitions.
All underpinned by a robust model For social ventures to fulfil their potential in this space, passion, commitment and a great idea are just the foundations. We know from our research and experience that scaling sustainable and impactful ventures requires: Evidence understanding and demonstrating what works and why Route to market access to schools and a targeted sales strategy Adaptable revenue model the ability to respond to a changing funding environment There are too many examples where 'doing here what worked there' failed because of a failure to see what was relevant to success beyond the fact that the intervention had worked somewhere else.
We can help you change lives faster The Young Academy is an intensive programme of specialist training and financial support tailored to the needs of early stage ventures working in the field of education. Over the course of the programme we will help you build your organisational capacity, strengthen your business model, demonstrate your social impact and finance your growth. Incubation Taught curriculum We offer a combined approach of core workshops and bespoke support that allows you to customise your learning experience. Studying alongside other smart, socially minded entrepreneurs brings unrivalled breadth and richness to your journey, as well as providing a peer support network you can turn to for advice and support. Pilot Rapid market testing with key customers, designed to validate underlying value assumptions and develop the right strategy for growth and investment. Mentor Each venture will be assigned a mentor who will be a seasoned advisor (eg head, entrepreneur, investor) and act as a sounding board as you develop your business strategy. Coach Each venture will be partnered with a financial coach who will work with you on financial projections, cash flow management and accounting. Office space Throughout the programme each venture will have access to hot-desking space.
15 16 Investment Fund Our investment fund will provide access to social investment of up to 150,000 per organisation. Financing will be tailored to meet the needs of your venture how much it needs, what terms, when. Kick start Investment of 1,000-10,000 to cover the cost of first stage pilots. Enabler Investments of up to 50,000 to support capacity building for ventures to strengthen their intervention, maximise social impact, develop a more robust evidence base, or implement the systems and processes required to scale. Growth Larger scale investments of up to 150,000 for high potential ventures that are ready to scale up and require growth capital to make the transition. Social investment is the provision of finance to generate both a financial and social return. We believe social ventures in education have the potential to deliver a high social impact whilst servicing finance needs.
