In January 1890, Carl Thieme and Wilhelm Finck founded the primary insurer Allianz, with accident, fire and transportation insurance as its core lines of business. 6 Allianz Career: Protection. Number One in Property and Casualty Insurance. Allianz is number one in the German insurance sector. It also ranks among the leading international insurers of industrial risk. In Germany, our core business activity of property and casualty insurance is run by Allianz Versicherungs-AG in Munich. We have a market share of more than 17 percent, which puts Allianz in first place in this field. Our private and commercial clients are serviced primarily through our nationwide network of more than 59,000 full-time and part-time agents, and through the customer service staff at Dresdner Bank branches. Allianz Global Risks is responsible for the Allianz Group s international industrial business, and is one of the world s largest providers of industrial insurance. We provide insurance cover for a large number of FORTUNE 500 companies and are the primary insurer for many of them. This business is managed mainly through brokers and specialized intermediaries. We define global benchmarks for products, know-how and service. At the Allianz Center for Technology (AZT), for instance, around 100 specialists in automotive and industrial engineering analyze the causes of damage and develop solutions to prevent and minimize losses. 7 Allianz Career: Provision. Strong trend towards individual retirement planning. Our second core activity is life and health insurance. In the life insurance segment we rank number one in Germany, and with Allianz Private Krankenversicherung, we are number three in German health insurance. In our European home market we are also among the leading companies in both sectors. Well positioned for the next challenge. It took me several years as a project manager in IT and the completion of an MBA at Manchester Business School before I could realize my dream. In August 2000, I joined Allianz Fast Track Management Development Program as a junior executive assisting a member of the management board for IT. This position gave me the unique opportunity to draw from my work experience and MBA studies; it included supporting the management board member in his daily business and I was responsible for a number of defined projects. However, as I look back, the most fascinating time was after Allianz acquisition of Dresdner Bank when I was working on the IT side of the post-acquisition process. Currently I am gaining sales experience as a Regional Sales Manager in Karlsruhe, Germany, where I oversee insurance agents. For me the sales group is the best place to acquire management skills the current work is tough and the learning curve especially regarding leadership is steep. I know that after two years of experience in sales, I will be well-positioned for the next challenge at Allianz. The trend towards more fully-funded individual retirement coverage will continue to increase over the coming years. Both private and company pension plans are experiencing accelerated growth in Germany and Europe. Allianz is extremely well positioned in this market. In the German company pension market, for example, we operate as an all-around provider, offering the full product range: pension funds, coverage of employers pension commitments, support funds and direct insurance. We also make our know-how available as a separate service, for instance by taking on the management of existing company pension plans. The health care system is also facing major challenges due to demographic shifts. Consequently, Allianz Private Krankenversicherung has worked with respected experts to develop a reform concept for generational insurance. It proposes that the capital coverage process, which has proven its merit in private health insurance, should be gradually extended to members of the statutory health insurance plans. 7

To this end we established, among others, the independent corporate division Allianz Dresdner Asset Management (ADAM). Following the acquisition of the US investment company PIMCO Advisors and Nicholas-Applegate as well as Dresdner Bank, our assets under management have increased to around EUR 1 trillion. World-wide risk and investment management. Curriculum Vitae. When I decided to leave my job in New York and move to Germany, I was concerned that my professional future would suffer significantly. After all, how good could the possibilities be for a Mexican, who spoke no German, and who worked as a lawyer representing mainly Latin American clients? Well I was very pleasantly surprised. A few years later, I can say that I have not for one single moment regreted this decision. I joined Allianz at the Corporate Finance department in August Given my legal background, getting up to speed with my finance colleagues was quite a challenge. However, everyone was extremely helpful and I was given very challenging responsibilities which made the job fun as well as demanding. In 2003, I was asked to join the Americas Division supporting the board member who was then new to the Allianz Group. Since January of this year, I am responsible for the South American operations within the Americas Division. We have companies in five countries, each of which presents different challenges and opportunities. I am very happy with the development of my career up to now and I am even more excited about the future. In numerous locations world-wide, including New York, Newport Beach, San Francisco, London, Paris, Milan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Frankfurt and Munich, our financial experts are monitoring the markets and analyzing investment opportunities. These last about three months and can facilitate entry into the Fast Track Management Development Program, for example as a junior executive assisting a board member. Activities Allianz Group opens up a fascinating array of challenging projects for interns. Examples from the past two years are a benchmarking project for ADAM, the introduction of an electronic accounting system for Russia in the Central and Eastern European Markets Divisions, and an employee retention concept for our Austrian subsidiary. As a rule, interns work simultaneously on several projects. This ultimately affords them with comprehensive insight into the unit to which they are assigned as well as an overview of the subsidiaries as a whole. For the projects to be brought to a successful close, we expect interns to possess aboveaverage analytical skills coupled with a high degree of self-suffiency, integrity and an ability to assert themselves. Working environment In the past few years Allianz has evolved from being a classic insurance company to being a modern financial services enterprise. This has resulted in the emergence of attractive new fields of activity that offer interesting challenges up to the operational level. Lateral thinking is encouraged. Many positions have been filled with employees with an international background. Internal communication and presentations are mainly in English in several departments of the company. Close to Executive Management During their internship interns are assigned to a specific department. Over and above their departmental contacts, interns will also take part in a specially designed umbrella program that includes an intercultural workshop, feedback discussions during and at the end of the internship as well as formal and informal lunches. Depending on the time of year, interns also take part in the meetings of junior executives, where they have the opportunity of participating in open discussions with members of the board of management and the executive management. 13 Tuan Thai Direct entry into the Fast Track. Another way of joining the Fast Track Management Development Program is direct entry. Your career path takes you from entry as a specialist in a selected area, e.g. via sales or foreign-market experience, to a leading function in general management. The target level after 6 to 10 years is the executive management level. I learn something new every day. After the first year of my MBA/MA program at Wharton and Lauder, I became a summer associate in the Group Corporate Finance Department, where I worked on sophisticated finance projects and interacted with many talented colleagues. The internship made me realize that this was where I wanted to be upon graduating; I was therefore elated to receive a full-time offer later. While I have worked on large capital market projects, I also have fixed responsibilities: structuring and implementing financing solutions for Allianz U.S. insurance subsidiaries, overseeing the ADR program, and looking after several major credit lines. I truly enjoy my work because I learn something new every day. My undergraduate studies in Economics and German at Vanderbilt University, my experience as a commercial lender at Bank of Scotland and my graduate studies in business have prepared me well for the challenges that I now face on a daily basis. But the learning never ends. With Allianz support, I am now enrolled in the CFA program. 13
