1 MANAGEMENT Boler School of Business Why Study Management at John Carroll? The management major at John Carroll dedicates itself to educating students to become world-class leaders in any organizational setting. Management has been defined as the process of achieving desired results through effective utilization of human and material resources. Managers are responsible for the effective and efficient performance of modern organizations. In management, students study theories and techniques applicable to all organized activity -- whether in business, government, education, health care, or other non-profit organizations. The high quality teaching, significant research and community involvement of the faculty and students involved in the management major have helped establish this area as a vital component of the Boler School of Business at JCU. As a major, management is especially appropriate for those who plan to become managers of family businesses or those who aspire to become entrepreneurs, developing new enterprises. It is also an excellent foundation for those who desire to continue graduate study in business administration, organizational behavior, production/operations management, management information systems, human resources management, industrial relations or law. Students have also taken their organizational, analytical and logical thinking skills learned in the management major and entered into top law schools including Ohio State, George Washington and Cleveland Marshall. In this increasingly high-tech world, managers must be familiar with the latest developments in technology, especially information technology, as well as competent in the management of people. Management majors are expected to be skilled in both of these areas. Management majors at John Carroll may design a major course of study that balances these areas or they may choose a track in either human resource management, management of business technology or entrepreneurship. There is also a cross-functional sequence of courses recommended for those with an interest in total quality management. Because of the interaction and open dialogue between students and faculty found at John Carroll, those graduating with a major in management are prepared to enter graduate school in business administration or the working world with full preparation to begin operating using the skills learned in the classroom and through internships.
2 Points of Interest Accreditation The Boler School of Business and the Department of Management is fully accredited by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Muldoon Center for Entrepreneurship through the Muldoon Center students have the opportunity to learn more about entrepreneurship, family business, and private companies. Internships The management faculty at John Carroll encourage students majoring in this department to seek experiential education in the area through internships. The Cleveland area contains a wealth of resources from which students can choose and become involved on a part-time basis. Due to the high quality internship experiences that students involve themselves with, they are better prepared with the reality of the working world as it touches upon managers. Many students make decisions about their potential careers based upon these experiences, and students have been known to receive job offers from the internship employers upon receiving a degree. There are also a limited number of competitively selected entrepreneurship internships available through the Muldoon Center for Entrepreneurship and the Kahl Chair for Entrepreneurship. These internships involve a significant shadowing component with the founders and key executives of companies which are members of the Entrepreneurs Association. Life After Graduation Recent John Carroll management alumni entered the workplace as management consultants, management/executive trainees, human resource specialists, production/operations planners and supervisors, bank managers and salespeople. With many available career options, management offers students the opportunity to tailor course work to specific careers. This flexibility distinguishes a management major at JCU from other majors.
