2 What is Psychology? Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes (cognitions and emotions) influenced by culture. Psychology is often divided into seven foundational areas: Abnormal Biological Cognitive Developmental Learning Personality Social

3 Why Psychology at Salem State? Small class sizes. Direct contact with professors, not teaching assistants. Campus chapter of Psi Chi, International Honor Society in psychology. Opportunities for research and internships. Opportunities to present research on campus or at professional conferences. One of most popular majors at Salem State University.

4 Psychology Faculty at Salem State University 20 full-time faculty, all with doctoral degrees or ABD All students are assigned to a full-time faculty member for academic advising. Full-time faculty teach the majority of courses for PSY majors. 20 part-time faculty, most with doctoral degrees and experience as practitioners in psychological fields. All faculty are experts in their areas of specialization (related to those foundational areas in psychology). All faculty have a strong commitment to teaching and working with students from culturally diverse backgrounds.

5 Psychology Department Facilities Recent renovations with new classrooms and offices. Use of technology in most psychology courses. Computer laboratory to support student research. Research space for use by students for research projects. Animal learning laboratory. Courses taught in variety of formats: traditional faceto-face, hybrid (partially on-line) format, and fully online.

6 Salem State University Undergraduate Psychology Degrees All students need 120 credits to graduate from Salem State. Bachelor of Arts (BA) requirements. 34 credits in psychology a minor program two years of a foreign language Bachelor of Science (BS) requirements. 41 credits in psychology more math and science courses an optional minor program

7 Salem State Specialized Psychology Degree: New Program Bachelor of Science: Concentration in Applied Behavior Analysis Degree Requirements: 41 credits in psychology, including 9 credits in courses related to behavioral research and applied/clinical interventions, and 3-6 credits in approved internship courses and seminars

8 Level 1 Psychology Degree Requirements General Psychology (PSY 101): Units on foundational areas and other areas A two-course sequence in Research Methods and Statistics (PSY 203/204) Grounding in statistics and the scientific method Design and implementation of personal research (cell phones in the arcade, agitation in nursing home patients, falling in public, talking to rats, impulsivity and timing, shaping behavior)

9 Level 2 Psychology Degree Requirements Division 2A: choose 2 Biological Psychology Cognitive Psychology Introduction to Learning Division 2B: choose 2 Abnormal Psychology Personality Psychology Social Psychology Child Growth, Adolescent Psychology, or Childhood & Adolescence

10 Level 3 Psychology Degree Requirements BA students choose 3, BS students choose 4 electives such as: Psychology of Women Sensation and Perception Adulthood and Old Age Psychology and the Law Psychology of Language Cognitive Neuropsychology Applied Behavior Analysis Clinical Psychology Environmental Psychology Evolutionary Psychology Industrial/Organizational Psychology African American Psychology Cognitive Development

11 Level 4 Psychology Degree Requirement: One Course Required Level 4 courses: advanced research course in social psychology, developmental psychology or animal learning advanced seminars in a variety of topics (Effects of Media on Children, Psychology of Social Class, Happiness, Perfectionism, Diverse Families, Research on Animal Learning) Level 4 one-on-one projects with a faculty sponsor: directed study projects on a topic of the student s choice directed research project of a student s choice Internship at a local community setting honors thesis research

12 Course Requirements for Applied Behavior Analysis Concentration Same as the BS Degree with certain courses required. Level 2A Courses (2 courses): Introduction to Learning required Either Introduction to Cognitive Psychology or Introduction to Biological Psychology required Level 3 Courses (4 courses): Applied Behavior Analysis I and Applied Behavior Analysis II required Two more Level 3 courses required Level 4 Internship and seminar required

13 Psychology: Social and Cultural Diversity Skills In our psychology curriculum various courses examine topics such as: Psychology of prejudice & discrimination Social class and SES Cross-cultural psychology Theories of oppression Stereotype threat theory Sociocultural identities based on race/ethnicity, sexual orientations, gender, religion, etc.
