5 Page 5 of 6 Created :54:00 Director of Experiential Learn Michael Massie 4001 Meadowcroft Road Kettering, Ohio Matt.massie111@gmail.com (937) December 7, 2015 Mr. Jason Eckert University of Dayton 300 College Park Dayton, Ohio Dear Mr. Eckert: I would like to take this opportunity to submit my resume for review and consideration for the position of Director of Experiential Learning. I feel strongly that my experiences in higher education, career development, student engagement and experiential learning make me an ideal candidate for this position. Additionally, having recently completed my Ph.D. in Organization Management with a specialization in Leadership I feel I bring relevant and practical experience as well as a strong theoretical foundation that will benefit me in this newly created leadership role. During my career in higher education I have developed a strong passion surrounding all aspects of experiential learning. I have been fortunate to be involved in developing and leading a wide variety of experiential learning opportunities. A few of my experiences include serving as the Project Director for the Ohio Means Internships and Co-Op Grant at Sinclair, collaborating with faculty on service learning opportunities and developing out of classroom engagement opportunities that allow students to apply knowledge gained in the classroom. As a faculty member I have worked to integrate experiential learning into my classes whenever possible; recognizing that students who engage in meaningful activities related to course topics are better prepared apply concepts and theories. Throughout both of my positions at Sinclair Community College, I have been involved in the institutional strategic planning process and am responsible for aligning the priorities and objectives of my department with the overall strategic direction of the college. In my role I serve as part of the Student Affairs leadership team in which I help guide the vision and strategic direction of the division. As part of the strategic planning cycle I am also directly involved in the assessment of department and division initiatives and utilize a variety of assessment methods to ensure continuous improvement of programs and services. Over the last eight years working at Sinclair I have been fortunate to develop numerous relationships with a wide variety of corporations, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. These relationships range from assisting them with connecting to students for volunteer opportunities to developing long-term strategic relationships for meeting future workforce needs. I have been recognized internally and externally for my ability to collaborate with employers, faculty, staff and other stakeholders. I take great pride in being able to develop effective relationships that meet the needs of all parties involved. I feel strongly that I am an effective communicator, both orally and in writing. I am very experienced in presenting to populations ranging from students to senior administrators. I have been fortunate enough to have presented at both national and state level conferences. I believe that one of my strengths is my ability to

6 Page 6 of 6 Created :54:00 Director of Experiential Learn understand the needs of my audience and adjust my presentation style to match those needs. I am also confident in my ability to communicate in writing. My experiences range from preparing annual strategic plans that require a high level of formality to developing clear and concise procedures and processes. I also believe that I possess a high level of inter-personal skills that are needed to work with the diverse population that this position requires. As a result of my ability to communicate and effectively listen I was one of a very select few individuals chosen to attend an intensive multi-day training on facilitating cross campus dialogue on critical initiatives. I have extensive experience in budget management and I am currently responsible for the management of three separate budgets. I am responsible for actively monitoring the budgets, reviewing expenditures, ensuring they comply with college policy and approving payment. Furthermore it is my responsibility to assist in the budget planning process on an annual basis and identify capital needs, as well as advocate for additional financial resources when appropriate. Over the last eight years I have been actively involved in the development of several successful grant proposals including a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation grant, a Department of Labor grant and an Ohio Jobs and Family Services grant. As a department Manager I am directly responsible for supervising a diverse staff consisting of; support staff, professional staff, student workers, visiting interns and a contracted graduate assistant. My approach to leadership is built off of various leadership theories but centers on the principles of Servant Leadership, recognizing that the needs of those that we lead are of the utmost importance and by recognizing and nurturing those needs greater things can be achieved. Working in a large, urban community college has provided me the opportunity to work with a very diverse population of students, alumni, community members and regional partners. These experiences have engrained in me an appreciation for the diversity within our community and the students we serve. I have a great appreciation for the Marianist tradition and the mission of the University of Dayton. Throughout my career in higher education I have developed a strong passion surrounding the belief that education serves as a means to help people change their own lives and the lives of others around them. I believe that through providing education we can achieve important social and cultural change. I am honored to be in a profession that allows me to serve the needs of others and the greater good. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you and the search committee to discuss my qualifications and why I believe I can positively impact the University of Dayton and the students it serves through the role of Director of Experiential Learning. Respectfully, Michael Massie Michael Massie, Ph. D.
