STALKER TEATRO The artistic core of Stalker Teatro have worked together since setting up the Political Collective at Turin Academy of Fine Arts in 1975, the heyday of Italy s post-68 cultural and political uproar. This has left an enduring mark on the company s work which is characterised by a strong commitment to artistic experimentation within socially sensitive or challenging situations. The founding members of Stalker Teatro were involved with Turin City Council s ground-breaking cultural animation projects in the late 70s and helped set-up Turin s first professionally run youth theatre in In 1981 they started a residency in Italy s largest psychiatric clinic in Grugliasco which led to the formal foundation of Stalker Teatro in Using a distinctive style developed from sitespecific events, performance art and participatory theatre, Stalker Teatro have performed throughout Italy, France, Germany, Poland and UK. Stalker Teatro continue to be based in Turin, where they regularly collaborate with the Museum Castello di Rivoli, the City Council s outreach initiative Progetto Periferie, and Cittadellarte Fondazione Pistoletto (Biella). Every year the company organises The International Festival of Performing Arts Differenti Sensazioni. Recent collaborations abroad include residencies at Marstall Bavarian State Theatres (Munich), the Academies of Fine Art of Vienna and Munich, the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Warsaw, the Tramway in Glasgow, the Laznia Nowa Theatre in Cracow, the Theatre Modrzejewskiej in Legnica (Poland).
OFFICINE CAOS Stalker Teatro permanent Turin base. An extensive theatre location dedicated to the creation of cultural events together with local inhabitants. Workshop areas for the formation, education and research of theatre for local schools and for youths in collaboration with the city's university institutes. A new and multi-functional theatre space located in Piazza Montale, in the Vallette district of Turin, for all kinds of shows: theatre, dance, concerts, happenings, art performances, art settings and meetings. 350 seats in mobile tiers adjustable stage space: front scene, on a central plan, performance pathway, for a total area of 20m x 30 m per 7 m height; sound and light system equipment, two rings 9 m x 8 m, control room, foyer, dressing rooms, cafeteria, labs.
MISSION Using a distinctive style developed from site-specific events, performance art and participatory theatre, Stalker Teatro projects includes the formation of work groups that can share an artistic process and present an original cultural production through free participation (*). Such initiatives and events attempt at generating a network of individuals of different age groups and cultural backgrounds. Citizens are therefore directly involved in the artistic production process, through educational and experimental activities of real social value that restore experience within the community. All participants are hence engaged in the creation of possible languages as vehicles and at the same time, as contexts for that sense of belonging to a community that needs to be discovered and perhaps, in our times, reinvented. 4 PROJECTS In just a few days project Stalker Teatro can create with a group of not professional people (amateurs, students, young artists, volunteers...) from your city a performance event developed along educational and research lines, addressed to a wide-ranging audience, that can be staged either in door or in the street. 1. INVISIBLE CITIES (from Italo Calvino s novel) The performance event consists in the creation of various multidisciplinary performances with the theatrical space being laid out as a pathway. Apart from being witnesses to the actions and events, the public is also directly involved in the performance, participating in the joint actions. All the participants are involved in the preparation of various joint actions/events that make up a performance. THE HERALD Glasgow, (N. Cooper) [...] In a area, where a circle of chairs surrounds an empty space, something magical happens. Without a word of instruction, actors from Turin s Stalker Teatro have the audience eye each other up, scrambling about the floor, and eventually collaborating in building something beautifully intangible, but, given the looks of surprise then joy on the faces of all ages as they willingly cavort through worlds of their own design, worth much more than bricks and mortar. Busily played out to Giles Lamb s euphoric score, director Gabriele Boccacini have achieved what a million town planners have walled-in and made impossible, liberating hearts and minds by giving them space. In ana ideal world, it would always be thus. video >
2. CONCERT ACTION A contemporary work of music and theatre. The performance event consists in the creation of different physical theatre actions with live music support. ECO DI BIELLA biella, (R. Iannì) [... ] The "table of concert-action" was placed on stage as a three metres by four impressive totem [... ] not representing a political concept, but still able to stimulate the necessary action, to transform contrasting elements in an harmonious concert. A rare verbalization provides the framework for this silent performance, drawn with the typical Gabriele Boccacini art direction linear simplicity, about thirty individuals choral action; the group is composed by Stalker performers and Biella High School students [... ] The space is crossed by rows of bodies acting, led by Simone Bosco, Piero Crestodina, Domenico Caliri and Paolo Porta sound. Stalker creates a playful context, based on color and movement geometries [... ] Audience is large, its applause is deserved. video >
3. TRIPODS A theatre and musical happening; a performance addressed to a wide-ranging audience that not only watches, but can also participate in the creation of a contemporary artistic event. PIEMONTE DAL VIVO Torino, (P. Bologna, R. Iannì) [ ] A huge branch wigh three forks, stripped of its leaves and twigs, is overturned..pitched like a tent, it is perfectly balanced, the ends of the three thin branches resting on the ground and the thick part where all three come togheter pointing towards the sky. Nature has become architecture. Stalker Teatro has 30 years of experience in theatrical experimentation centred on the relationship between theatre and visual arts, producing performances which often include direct audience participation. This experience is without doubt the commo thread slifully linking theatre, original live music, dance and film through the course of the show. A dramatic recounting of umanity searching for itself and finding itself unfurls against fascinating backdrops, tracing a route that begins with the search for tripods and close the circle there, thanks to food, the universal symbol of hospitality, which is offered to the participating audience. Following a story told in film images, the Stalker Teatro performers interact onstage together with Gabriella Maiorino s dancing, both primitive and contemporary.the coming together of arts, actors and spectators happens under the flight of an wagle with a beak of ice, in a space redefined by magically arranged trifurcated branches, pointing towards the ground, as the live jazz of Franciscone, Ballestrero and Pala reminds us that if music was created by humans then is also God within us.[ ] video >
Other projects: 1. INCONTRI (ENCOUNTERS) The "Encounters" of Stalker Theatre gives the spectators the opportunity to participate directly in the theatrical event in this way the performance transforms into a kind of happening, and step by step engages and involves the audience. The poetic theme that inspired the text, is drawn from a studies on some parts of Old Testament, in particular on some fragments dedicated to the encounter with the other and to the coexistence between the people in a community. video > 2. ONE and THREE The performance is composed of scenes, creating different playful situation, made using a particular language, developed by the company during a long laboratory experience with young people and adults, based on the use of simple objects that stimulate the dynamics of the gameplaying theatrical collective. video > 3.
