PRINT POÈME NUMÉRIQUE PROJECT DESCRIPTION Project name: POÈME NUMÉRIQUE LABORATORIES CASE STUDIES A project by: Maurer United Architects Year: ONCE UPON A TIME The Case Studies project is a utopian architecture project by Maurer United Architects (MUA) that was developed under the umbrella of Baltan s Poème Numérique research programme. For one year, MUA developed one utopian idea each month, resulting in twelve sketches. The original Poème Electronique pro ject from 1958 is very inspiring because it was the first project that combined audio, video and architecture into one iconographic form. However, like all liquid architecture projects, its shape is very inflexible and does not fit the demands of contemporary media architecture. As part of the Case Studies projects MUA investigated a variety of approaches to developing a new media pavilion called the Poème Numérique. 59
BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 1 Combining the approaches of Mies van der Rohe, Adolf Loos and Ray & Charles Eames could result in a pavilion with a flexible roof that can build all characters with 4 x 4 pixel resolution. The roof is carefully detailed, so no rainwater leakage is possible. Also reversed mirror windows are placed to increase the daylight effect (similar to Loos s American Bar, 1908). BALTAN Above: Possible variations of the roof, top view. Below: Horizontal section, isometric view. 60

BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 2 A five-storey building could be shaped by 3 x 3 metrehigh pixels, showing a digital 0 in one direction and a digital 1 in the other. The facades of the building show a 5 x 5 pixel composition. A simple font could be projected onto this. See the letter P in the 0 facade and in the 1 facade. Compare this with the isometric views on the opposite page. This experiment serves as a reminder that each sentence you write on your computer consists only of ones and zeros. BALTAN Isometric view of 'building'. Facade views. Facade views with highlighted 3D pixels. 62

BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 3 The relationship between architecture and characters might lead one to do a spatial font project. In this case study however, another path was taken. This is our first attempt at developing a screen character, an orthogonal architectural figure: a composition of monitors. The screens were aligned along different mirror axes, making two different facets of the character appear: one male side and one female side. The robot-like character functions as a totem. One cannot physically enter the object/sculpture, but it is possible to project images onto it. The screens all have standard measurements. Isometric view. BALTAN 'Male' facade. 'Female' facade. 64

BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 4 Transport container units could be used to create a mobile media pavilion. A 12 x 3 metre unit is stacked on top of another one. Covered with black glossy composite material and finished off with spectacular outside lighting, the installation will certainly draw attention. Inside the pavilion, two tiered seating structures are placed facing each other at a maximum distance of 12 metres. The audience can see each other or the screen in the middle of the 6 metre-high space. The screen could display the same or different shows to the two audience sections. The space can also be used to host workshops or special media installations. The resulting outside media installation generates an architectural experience. BALTAN Floor plan with facing tribunes. 10 BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 5 Reconfiguring the arrangement of the monitors, loudspeakers and computers of the Telcosystems installation 12_series (2009) (a) into a robot sculpture changes the impact of the work. This screen character seduces the viewer into interpreting the relationship between the monitors, not based on the generated images but on the physical relationship between the screens. The head will be interpreted as important or leading in relation to the left lower leg. This will be underlined by the different possible positions of the character. 12 BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 6 If one takes the original Rietveld Bus Stop (b), located in front of Eindhoven s city hall, and replaces the ceramic tiles with LED tiles, and the illuminated signs of the column with the latest 21:9 Philips Cinema LCD TV screens, it becomes clear that De Stijl satisfies the demands of contemporary media architecture far better than all the blob-architecture designs around the world. The right angle for this media era is the right angle. Let us explore if De Stijl can help us generate contemporary architecture solutions. b Baltan in the Bus Stop, p BALTAN Original bus stop by Gerrit Rietveld. 70

BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 7 If the original De Stijl font by Van Doesburg is extruded into a spatial character, it is possible to design a set of just seven die to display all the letters of the alphabet on the available sides. A Poème Numérique pavilion can be designed with these 4 metre-high die. The title: Poème Numérique can be read from above. Lights can be placed on the bottoms of the top beams that illuminate the tops of the lower beams. A labyrinthine setting of horizontal displays comes into being, ideal for exhibitions or working places. BALTAN Isometric top view. 72

BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 8 Projecting a Mondriaan painting on a wall and using a computer to generate the lines of depth according to the viewer s position (tracked by a sensor) creates virtual depth. The depth lines change position as the viewer moves. The same image is projected simultaneously on the opposite wall. If the viewer turns around he will experience the same painting but with the incorrect depth impression. As he moves, the depth lines will change in an unnatural way. BALTAN fictional perspective and background surface sensor (thermo camera) video projector fictional perspective and background surface video projector correct perspective projection of mondriaan painting (according to position of person in interactive area) interactive area same perspective projection of mondriaan painting on opposite wall (perspective effect looks mirrored) Schematic explanation of the installation set-up. 74

BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 9 A new experience of Theo van Doesburg s painting Contra-Compositie met dissonanten XVI (1925) is created if the work is translated into a spatial composition. In this case the painting is transformed into several architectural structures of varying heights. BALTAN The floor area measures 42 x 24 metres. The little village can be built of tents. The scale is optimised so that the tents can easily be filled with standard units of 3 x 6 metres. Narrow passages come into being between the tents (the black stripes in the original composition). The architectural sculpture can provide accommodation for shops, galleries, offices or housing. The interior space between the modular units and the tents can be illuminated with (coloured) lights and placed according to the original composition. Sensors can measure movements of visitors in the buildings. The more intense the movement, the more the sculptures will be illuminated in the original colours. Visitors experience the sensation of moving through a De Stijl painting. Interior impression showing the original artwork by Theo van Doesburg. Spatial translation of the composition. 76
PRINT MAURER UNITED ARCHITECTS LABORATORIES Artist impression of the installation at night. 77
BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 10 If one were to surround one s individual residence with a transparent media facade, it would also be interesting to continue this strip on the inside. In the example floor plan, this strip would provide 30 large (full height) wide-screen televisions simultaneously. All 30 of your favourite TV channels would be visible at the same time. Instead of zapping, one could browse the channels by walking through the house or by moving the screen content to the left or right. The channel that is being watched would be visible on the inside; the public broadcasting channels that are not viewed by the individual would be visible in the public space, where they belong. In this way, private and public broadcasting are redefined. Instead of TV channels, one could also focus on social media channels such as YouTube. To be continued BALTAN Impression of inside experience. 78
PRINT MAURER UNITED ARCHITECTS LABORATORIES Isometric explanation of the concept. 79
BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 11 Writing the name Poème Numérique in the Labfont [1] typeface developed by Maurer United in 1998 produces a labyrinthine plan. If this plan is used as a roof plan, it would have to be supported by walls with doorways, resulting in an even more complex labyrinthine floor plan below it. The replacement of the labyrinth walls with slim support columns and a full glass facade introduces a dazzling play with transparency. Compare this to the results of Case Study 1. (c) 1 Developed by Maurer United in 1998 c Case study 1, p.60. BALTAN Above: Poème Numérique written in Labfont. Below: View of roof from above. 80

BLUE- POÈME NUMÉRIQUE CASE STUDIES Project Case study 12 A media facade with relative dimensions of 1:8 (height/length) can be folded into a cube. The inside and outside of the strip change positions several times in the spatial, folded composition. The design results in a full media architecture, rather than just a media facade.
