Many of you would be aware that in 2015 we applied for a grant through the Victorian Government Capital Grant Program. We applied for financial support to demolish and then construct a new multipurpose hall facility including school aftercare facilities, a basketball court sized area, multipurpose room, a new kitchen/canteen, accessible toilets and store rooms. Last week Lizzie Blandthorn, our State Member of the Legislative Assembly for Pascoe Vale, advised us that we were successful in obtaining a $1,000,000 state grant to proceed with this project. Lizzie also advised the community that the State Government had been working with the Catholic sector and our grant was provided on an agreed model where the Government was matching the sector s funding dollar for dollar. The majority of the sectors funding will actually come in the form of a long term loan that the school will need to obtain from the Catholic Development Fund. We are waiting to hear what financial assistance we will receive from the Catholic Education Office before we finalise the details of the actual loan. Both State and Federal Governments allocate specific capital funding through educational authorities to schools to support capital works in schools. For many years we have been applying unsuccessfully through the Catholic Education Office in attempts to secure either State or Federal Capital funding that would have been used to update or reconstruct the hall. On behalf of the community I thank Lizzie for her amazing support throughout our application process. Lizzie raised the matter of the poor condition of the hall in State Parliament and organised a visit where both Steve Elder, the Director of Catholic Education and the State Minister of Education, James Merlino, visited our school to view the condition of our current hall. I have no doubt that Lizzie s efforts contributed greatly to the success of our application. Regards Alan S Please note update to mass roster this week
2 EDUCATION IN FAITH CLASS MASS Class Mass this Thursday for SD has been cancelled as Father Paul is not available to say the Mass. A communion service is being held for any parishioners or parents who would like to attend. FIRST EUCHARIST LUNCHEON The first Eucharist luncheon is on Wednesday 14 September following the school Mass. We are in desperate need of some parents to organize this for the children. It just involves buying some food and helping to serve this on the day. At this stage we have had very little response. If there are any parents who could help and make this a memorable time for the children could they please let me know. Trish Segrave Religious Education Leader SPORT INTERSCHOOL SPOR TS Our boys Soccer team played against Moreland Primary School on Friday to determine the winner of the Coburg District. Unfortunately the boys lost (1-3) but they played tremendously well and should be congratulated on their wonderful efforts throughout the whole interschool sport season. Thank you to all the parents who came down and offered their support. MIDDLES HOOPTIME The Middles Hooptime Tournament will be held THIS Friday 29 th of July at MSAC. A note went home yesterday letting parents know of their role on this day. A reminder note will go home later this week reminding both students and parents of the expectations of the day. Can parents who have been allocated a coaching or scoring position meet me in the downstairs planning room (entrance through the South Yard) to collect their fixtures and team tops on Friday morning (prior to 8:05am). I would like to go through and further explain the requirements of the day. Thank you again for the overwhelming amount of support we received from parents wanting to assist. The children are very excited and are looking forward to a fun filled day. Regards, Cecilia Garden Sport Coordinator
3 LEARNING AND TEACHING Term 3 is well underway and is set to be another busy and exciting term! Preps Reach 100! The prep children will celebrate their 100 th day at school on Thursday. Congratulations to all the children for their wonderful learning and achievements so far. On Thursday the two prep classes will celebrate this milestone. Curriculum Overviews The curriculum overviews detailing the term s work for your child s class will be sent home tomorrow. Please take the time to share this document with your child and discuss their learning throughout the term. Junior Literacy Helpers Thank you to the parents who are helping in our prep and junior classes. We have had a wonderful response and most class timetables are fully booked. Parent helpers have been put on a fortnightly or in some cases a monthly roster and have been allocated a one hour time block, either 9:00 am or 10:00 am. We ask that you please attend in your allotted hour only unless you have made prior arrangements with the classroom teacher to stay the full 2 hours. Just a reminder for parents to notify class teachers or the office if you are unable to attend. The Prep and Junior classes have been working extremely hard this year during literacy. To support them further in the literacy program the students require a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. These texts will be used as part of each class s library, where students have the opportunity to select good fit books to read each day. To assist us with this, we are asking families to donate any fiction and nonfiction books that you have at home and are no longer using. The books must be in good condition and suitable for primary aged students ranging from prep to year six. Any book donations can be given to your child s classroom teacher or alternatively left in a tub at the front office. Thank you to all the families who donated books last week. Mini Olympics We will be holding a Mini Olympics at school on Wednesday 10 th August. Your child will be given a note with more details about this Day. Have a great week! 9 days to go! Liz Finlayson Learning and Teaching Leader
4 WELLBEING Parenting Ideas- Michael Grose on the Pokemon Go App! Many parents have been faced with the new app/game that is infiltrating families. Michael Grose had a great blog about it so I thought I would share his thoughts. It is so important to give our children guidance and boundaries when they are using any form of internet access. It is also imperative that we know and understand the types of apps they have and how and why our children use them. School Nurse Could all prep families please remember to return school nurse envelopes by the end of the week. Libby Sheedy Deputy Principal/Wellbeing Leader
