Sport Clubs in the CSU Intramural Sports Existing or carried on within the bounds of an institution, especially a school. Consists of matches and contests that take place among teams from the same institution. Intramural sports programs are often organized on college campuses to promote competition and fun among the students. Extramural Sports Carried on outside the bounds of an institution or community. Typically, consists of a match or matches between the champion or best team from different universities. 5

Sport Clubs in the CSU Sport Clubs a Recognized Student Organization that has been formed by individuals who are motivated by a common interest and desire to participate in a particular sports activity. Sport Club teams typically compete in intercollegiate contests against other universities. Athletics University administered teams. Compete in intercollegiate contests against other universities. 6

Role of CSURMA 1. A major CSU concern: Sport Clubs. 2. Online Risk Assessment project focused attention on travel by Sport Clubs. 3. EO 969 (then 1006, now 1068) also created concern on some campuses. 4. Recognition by CSU that Sport Clubs required special attention particularly in the area of Travel. 7

Concepts of a Sport Clubs Model Agreement on the need for a Framework for effectively managing Sport Clubs. Ian McGregor presented idea of adapting a Sport Clubs Model specifically for the CSU system, based on one he d previously developed. CSURMA decided to pursue the development of a Sport Clubs Model for the CSU system. 8

Sport Clubs Committee Mandate Create a Sport Clubs Model implementable at all CSU schools small and large. Develop a Model that is simple, doable and should not add significantly to current workload of Sport Clubs professionals. Develop a Model based on agreed-upon minimum requirements. Model should be sensitive to financial constraints on campuses. 9

Sport Clubs Committee Challenges Large System: 23 schools Institutional Autonomy within CSU schools Sport Clubs structured differently on campuses (sometimes no Campus Recreation department ) History of Sport Clubs: Great deal of autonomy in Sport Clubs operations Small # of Sport Clubs staff to manage programs 10

General Approach Develop a Framework to Manage Sport Clubs which: 1. Respects institutional autonomy. 2. Recognizes the value of Sport Clubs. 3. Recognizes the potential for student learning and development. 4. Promotes safe practices. 11

Operating Structure Policies 3 Key Areas: 1. Recognition & Renewal Process 2. Member Registration & Annual Submission Requirements 3. Management of Sport Clubs 12

Travel Policies 4 Key Areas: 1. Trip Administrator/Leader 2. Trip Approval 3. Emergency Procedures 4. General Travel Policies The framework creates a structure for the effective management of Sport Clubs by incorporating: Minimum Requirements Good Practices 13

Changes in Updated Guidelines Why 1. Since 2010, new EO s/policies have been issued, and state laws have changed 2. Management of Sport Clubs is evolving nationally 3. Feedback from campuses helped us provide clarification for an improved document When 1. Fall 2013 or soon after 14

Changes in Updated Guidelines Changed name from Model to Resource Guide Redefined Tier 1/Higher Risk and Tier 2/Lower Risk Clubs Added that Risk Managers should help: Determine which clubs are Sport Clubs Determine which clubs are Tier 1/Tier 2 15

Changes in Updated Guidelines Updated establishing proper cash collection procedures and security of Personal Confidential Information, as guided by CSU Policies and the ICSUAM Added concussion training guidelines 17

Changes in Updated Guidelines Updated waiver form with the CSU Approved Waiver of Liability (EO 1051) Added that the Sport Clubs Administrator must approve the selection of all coaches Streamlined Coach s Expectations 18

Changes in Updated Guidelines Added that when multiple vehicles travel, they should leave at the same time, but not caravan or directly follow each other Drivers must have a commercial license for vehicles capable of transporting 15 persons or greater. Use of 15 passenger vans is strongly discouraged! Added that Risk Managers will assist with obtaining Foreign Travel Insurance for international travel 19
