Among the many challenges for organizers is ensuring that more than 10,000 world-class athletes and officials attending will have access to stateof-the-art medical imaging technology and be kept secure with specialized video surveillance equipment. From a standing start, Lucy and her colleagues spent two years cultivating a broad range of relationships in both the private and public sectors, as different groups of people managed the different venues to be used for the TORONTO 2015 Games. In the end, Siemens became a valuable infrastructure technology provider at various venues. For the soccer stadium in Hamilton and velodrome in Milton, Siemens technology has been pivotal. Siemens Total Building Solution has been implemented, which encompasses security, fire and life safety and building automation systems like that used to control the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and humidity in these buildings. Other Siemens solutions include sophisticated video monitoring and access control for security, as well as switchgears, transformers, panelboards and an integrated Power Monitoring System; State-of-the-art fire and life safety alarm and audio notification systems at CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House in Scarborough, the recently expanded Exhibition Stadium at CIBC Pan Am Park, and the Games International Broadcast Centre (IBC) in Toronto as well as at the Hamilton and Milton venues. Creative thinking Lucy knew that the company could also add even more value, so she served as a catalyst to get Siemens involved on the medical side of the event as well. After engaging the Organizing Committee for the TORONTO 2015 Games on Siemens medical capabilities, she handed things off to the Siemens Healthcare organization, led by Senior Vice President Jim Graziadei. It s what we call a Siemens One process where one part of the business will find an opportunity, but we ll also let the customer know that Siemens has a broad portfolio of solutions, he explains. So when we found they were building a Polyclinic, and we realized they were building almost a miniature hospital there, we were excited to be able to be show them not only the outstanding diagnostic equipment we can provide, but also how we can be trusted consultants to help them in their overall planning of their clinic and other sites too. Dr. Julia Alleyne is chief medical officer of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, responsible for everything related to medical services at the event, whether it s emergency care for athletes, officials and volunteers, or administering antidoping programs. Most importantly, the relationship involves valuable consulting support, including assistance for Dr. Alleyne and her medical team on specific items like X-ray licensing, as well as for broader mandates, such as finding creative solutions to meet the needs of athletes staying at satellite villages far away from the Polyclinic, or working with other official sponsors on collaborative ideas. Of the many venues for the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, none will be quite like the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletes Village. As home base for the 10,000 athletes competing at the event, it s the largest and most complex site of all. A top priority for the village is ensuring the athletes security and Siemens is playing a central role. Siemens Building Technologies organization is providing a state-of-the-art surveillance system featuring a large collection of ultra-high-resolution cameras that will capture video 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the entire time the village is operational. And every second of recorded video will be saved thanks to a special hard drive system that has a massive amount of storage space. Lisa Kolodziejski, Manager of Security Integration for TORONTO 2015, is responsible for the Athletes Village. She says there is great complexity in the design of the surveillance system and the equipment installation process. A long list of logistical considerations and limitations must be taken into account, plus there s the challenge of meeting the diverse and sometimes conflicting needs of a wide range of stakeholders, from the local police force to team delegations from countries participating in the TORONTO 2015 Games. It can be an ever-changing plan, Lisa explains. We ll find out that one group has issues with the latest alteration of plans and we ll have to go back and revisit everything again. And through it all, Siemens is so accommodating. No matter how many times we ask for changes, no matter what we throw at them, they will come on short notice and brainstorm on new ideas and find new solutions. She reflects on a meeting she had with Siemens Canada s security team, to illustrate the point. We found out that the wireless frequency being proposed was not going to work for our spectrum group, and we d have to change to a different frequency, she describes. Siemens came up with a few different options and said they d be happy to go forward and obtain the license, whereas I know some other suppliers might say: well, it s up to you to go and change the license. We re working with their schedules, and with their knowns and unknowns, to deliver a plan that will work for everyone, while still meeting the challenging timeframe. Whether it s the medical or security equipment, or fire, safety, or building automation systems, Siemens is providing extremely sophisticated technology. For example, the ultrasound devices are highly specialized, designed specifically for diagnosing musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries. Abdominal and pelvic ultrasounds are common, describes Dr. Alleyne. But the ultrasound has evolved tremendously, and we now use MSK ultrasound a lot in sports medicine. It s fast becoming like a stethoscope an assessment tool used directly by the physician, as opposed to something that can be used only by specialized technologists. It s a similar story for the video cameras in the security package. The quality of their resolution is four times what one sees with Blue Ray. And after the images they capture are transmitted wirelessly with superior security, everything can be stored and accessed using a unique 36-terabyte recording device. Drawing on all my years of practice and experience, I ll do everything I can to help the people using the equipment to be totally responsive and present for them. For the security side, those sentiments are echoed by Jeff Tilley, Security Project Manager.
