1 La Patera School Tiger Talk August/September 2013 From the Principal s Desk Dear La Patera Community, Welcome to the new school year! Every month, you will be receiving a newsletter from the PTA that will include the principal s message, calendar events and general information about La Patera and PTA. This is a great communication tool to keep you informed and to find out about upcoming school events. We will also be using Parent Square as our online communication tool. I strongly encourage you to sign-up for Parent Square if you have not signed up yet. Please visit our school website or visit to sign-up. One of the many ways to learn more about La Patera is to join me at our monthly parent meeting. Principal s Coffee will be held the first Friday of the month. Our first Principal s Coffee meeting is scheduled for Friday, October 4 th at 8:30 AM. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend these monthly meetings so they can hear from the principal about the school academic programs and events that are happening at La Patera. There will also be a time for parents to ask questions and talk directly to the principal about any concerns/suggestions they might have. If you are unable to make it to the meetings, please remember that I am always available via at raraiza@goleta.k12.ca.us or by calling La Patera at (805) I am looking forward to a great school year. Go Tigers! Regards, Ricardo Araiza, Ed.D. Principal La Patera School Newsletter 1

4 After School Enrichment Activities **The following after-school classes are not sponsored by either La Patera School nor the PTA.** They are run by independent contractors. This information is being provided to our parents as a courtesy. Thank you. Goleta Valley Tennis Academy At La Patera Fall Session will start on September 13 th. Sessions will be on Fridays from 3:00 4:00 pm. Taught by Peter Gerstenfeld. The class provides general tennis instruction for Elementary students in first thru sixth grade. Classes cover proper grips, ground- stroke mechanics, volleys and serves. Students remain engaged and energized moving through drills and games created to provide repetitive practice of the skills demonstrated over the class session. Tennis rules and strategy will also be covered. Materials and Fees: Tennis rackets and balls are provided. A portable net will be set up on a designated blacktop area. Classes will be taught by Peter Gerstenfeld and/or an assistant tennis instructor. Children should wear athletic shoes and comfortable clothing to participate. The cost is $144 for the session ($12/class). Please visit for more information and to register. Rising Star Performers Theater Class Starting on Wednesday, October 2 nd through March, from 3-4 pm in the MPR. This year we will be doing the 50 s musical Doo Wop Wed Widing Hood. It has a lot of wonderful parts that are very equal in lines, a lot more musical numbers and a lot more crazy action. This season we will focus more on developing the characters, feeling more comfortable with the songs and taking our time with the overall production. As always, there will be extra rehearsals toward the end of the session and there is no payment for March. This offsets the class that will be missed by the sixth graders due to CIMI and the times we will not have class due to parent teacher conferences. The cost is $50 a month, with no payment due for March. A discount of $20 is applied if paid in full by the first class on October 2 nd ($230 instead of 5 payments at $50 or $250 for the session). There is also a one- time sibling discount of $15. Please contact Rhonda Redkey at theredkeys@cox.net for more information and to register. La Patera School Newsletter 4

Did you know that as a parent/guardian you may open an account in your name and check out books from the La Patera School Library? The library currently opens at 8:00 a.m. and closes at 3:00 p.m. (2:10 on Thursdays). Please stop by if you are on campus to browse through our collection and check out extra books for your student(s) or to enjoy one yourself! Also, log onto to search for AR books by title, author, and subject; to find State book lists; to find Librarian s Picks; to find out What Kids are Reading; to do an Advanced Search to find books in your students reading level once they know that number. You will also find a link on the La Patera School Website to Renaissance Place for Accelerated Reader. Have a fun and successful year reading! Our Health Nurses Notes August/September 2013 Goleta Union School District Nurses Back to School With Asthma and Allergies Asthma and allergy symptoms often increase in September. When you return to school in August, update the teacher, school nurse and health office staff regarding your child s asthma/allergy triggers and symptoms. If your child requires medication at school, have their allergist or primary care provider complete an authorization form and bring it to the health office along with the medication. The school nurse can then create an Asthma/Allergy Action Plan and train appropriate staff to assist your child in the event of an asthma episode or allergic reaction. To the greatest extent possible, ensure that your child knows what food or environmental allergens trigger symptoms and instruct him/her to go to an adult for help at the first sign of allergy symptoms or in the event that they are exposed to something that could trigger an allergic reaction.
