D., CTL Dr. Ted Farris is currently a Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management and Charn Uswachoke International Scholar at the University of North Texas located in Denton, Texas. He was named an Austrian-American Fulbright Scholar in 2008, the 2nd Fulbright Scholar ever named in the field of logistics and was resident at the Fachhochschul Studiengang Produktions-und-Managementtechnik in Steyr, Austria. He is the Senior Researcher at FH-Steyr Logistikum, one of the top supply chain research centers in Europe. A recent Transportation Journal article examined authorship in the seven leading logistics journals from 1990 to Dr. Farris ranked 17th out of 3,657 different authors. Dr. Farris started the industry-focused logistics program at the University of North Texas in At the time there were no logistics programs in the DFW area. Now there are 7. 2 AUGUST PDM REVIEW The topic of the August 6 th PDM was Waste in a Lean World A Lean journey through the wastelands and what a journey it was. Our leader on this journey was Mike Bell. Mike has been a Global Operations, Supply Chain, and Procurement Consultant since Prior to that Mike worked for both Hewlett Packard and Texas Instrument in the areas of Supply, Procurement and Material Operations. Charles Early, Supply Manager Waste in a Lean World A Lean journey through the wastelands, just the title drew a full house of attendees wanting to take that journey and understand what type of waste could be found in transforming to a Lean World. Mike started with defining Lean and what constitutes a Lean process. He followed with defining the forms of muda (Japanese term for waste or anything that adds no value for the customer) that negatively impact a Lean process. Mike covered the seven primary types; Over-production, Defects, Transportation & Conveyance, Excess Inventory, Unnecessary Motion, Unnecessary Processing, Waiting and Unrealized Creativity. For each we were given examples of the wastes as well as methods to address it which ultimately leads to improved customer satisfaction. Mike wrapped up by further defining Lean and identifying his Lean Sigma Tool Kit which listed valuable tools to help achieve a Lean process. Mike s interaction with the audience was great and kept us engaged. He solicited responses to questions typical to those found in training for the CPIM or CSCP certification. The audience was quick to respond reflecting a working knowledge of both disciplines. Speaking for the NTX Chapter of APICS I would like to thank Mike for devoting his evening and imparting in us his valuable knowledge.
