IT S GOOD TO BE B.A.D. LATE NIGHT ALCOHOL ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMMING JANELLE DENSBERGER COORDINATOR OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES ALEXANDRA CHAPMAN BILLIKENS AFTER DARK INTERN
Overview of Presentation Theory of Prevention on College Campuses Targeting your audience for alternative programs Logistics of a alternative programs Group Activity Brainstorming Conversation
Theory of Prevention Socio-Ecological Model of Prevention Prevention occurs on four levels Individual Relationship Community Societal Application to late night programs
Socio-Ecological Model SOCIETAL COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIP INDIVIDUAL
Individual Characteristics Biological and personal history factors that may increase the likelihood of a student s decision-making process in college on whether or not to drink Some of these factors are age, education, income, religious beliefs, family history, and personal values Application to Alternative Programs Take into account that student do and do not drink for many reasons
Relationship Characteristics The second level includes factors that increase risk because of relationships with peers, intimate partners, and family members. A person's closest social circle- peers, partners, and family members- influence their behavior and contribute to their range of experience Application to Alternative Programs Most directly influential factor Create opportunities to build relationships at programs
Community Characteristics The third level explores the settings, such as schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods, in which social relationships occur Seeks to identify the characteristics of these settings that are associated with becoming a potential binge drinker while in college. Application to Alternative Programs This level is where many intervention programs on college campuses make an impact on the reduction of binge drinking
Societal Characteristics The fourth level looks at the broad societal factors that help create a climate in which binge drinking might be encouraged or inhibited. These factors include social and cultural norms. Other large societal factors include the health, economic, educational and social policies that help to maintain economic or social inequalities between groups in society Application to Alternative Programs No direct application Future would hope that by changing a campus culture we can change societal norms
Targeting your Audience A late-night alternative program is more than just campus activities Think about your different types of audiences Students who typically do not partake in the college drinking scene First-year students who came from high school with the expectation that drinking is a norm in college Students who typically will go out and drink on a weekend evening Other audiences to consider: International students, Commuters, Students with Disabilities Think creatively to reach a broad group of students!
Billikens After Dark Sponsors alcohol alternative late night programming at Saint Louis University Provides opportunities for students to spend time with friends and have fun in a safe late night environment Late night alcohol-free social events serve as an alternative to the party scene Promote responsible behavior and social interaction on campus
Goals Engage students in activities that serve as models for how to have fun without excessive and high-risk drinking Acknowledge students abilities to organize themselves around, respond to, and challenge the highly charged issues of partying and drinking Unite student groups that might not typically work together, thereby promoting collaboration, creating community, and building coalitions Expose Saint Louis University students to a wide variety of cultures other than their own Increase health and safety for all Saint Louis University students Decrease crime, irresponsible conduct and unsafe behavior
Sponsorship Encourage student organizations and University departments to build events around Billikens After Dark criteria Creates a consistent quality late night programming experience for students Allocate mini grant funds for alcohol-free social events
Mini Grant Funding Criteria Sponsored by a student group or University department Social, recreational, educational, or entertainment-based Recommended to be held on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday nights Scheduled to begin in the late night hours (after 8:00pm) Alcohol-free or non alcohol centered
Mini Grant Funding Parameters Awards are intended to supplement funds obtained from other campus funding sources Awards are designed to defray partial - not full!- costs of the event Billikens After Dark s typical funding limits, though exceptions may apply: If the event is for a group or floor (50 people or less) the award will be up to $100 If the event is for an entire hall or multiple groups ( people) the award will be up to $250 If the event is campus wide the award will be up to $500
Mini Grant Funding Process Fill out an online application (must be submitted two weeks in advance) Provide an event overview with a detailed breakdown of the event budget Provide copies of event publicity and promotional materials Billkens After Dark must be acknowledged as a co-sponsor on all publicity and promotional materials Attend a Billikens After Dark Task Force Meeting to clarify the proposal and answer questions Turn in itemized receipts and an event evaluation form no more than 2 weeks after the event is held
Event Examples Concerts & music festivals Comedy shows & poetry nights Every Freakin Friday Series Game & trivia nights Late night at the Recreation Center SLU cinema Movie Series SLU Nights at the Grand Center
Event Incentives Students receive a Billikens After Dark incentive card for attending events After attending six events receive a free t-shirt and are entered into a raffle for prizes Free food, giveaways, & much more at events
Task Force Consists of student representatives from various aspects of campus life Fraternity and Sorority Life, Resident Advisors, Student Activities Board, & Student Government Association Consist of staff members within the Division of Student Development Development and oversight of Billikens After Dark Weekly programming opportunities Administration of funds and event registration Publicity and promotional for events
Additional Funding State & federal grants that can subsidize the late night programming budgets Partners in Prevent Grant NCAA Choices Grant Partnerships with other University departments & programs

Group Activity You are coordinating a late night alcohol alternative event on a Friday night within the first 6 weeks of school. The event you are planning is in your student center from 8PM until midnight Your resources available for the event are: movies, video and board games, karaoke, root beer and popcorn, and approximately $500 to hire out entertainment or activities. Your challenge is to create an event that will target the following audiences: Group 1: Students who typically do not partake in the college drinking scene Group 2: First-year students who came from high school with the expectation that drinking is a norm in college Group 3: Students who typically will go out and drink on a weekend evening
Brainstorming What ideas do you have about alternative programs? What are your struggles and/or fears? What have been your biggest successes? What campus resources do you/should you utilize?
