HBCU-Center for Excellence Through a Cooperative Agreement with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration s (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, (CSAT) and Center for Mental Health Services, (CMHS) Morehouse School of Medicine established the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Center for Excellence in Behavioral Health (HBCU-CFE), funded as Grant No. TI

The Goals of the HBCU - CFE Promote student behavioral health to positively impact student retention Expand campus service capacity, including the provision of culturally appropriate behavioral health resources Facilitate best practices dissemination and behavioral health workforce development

Screening for Mental Health: CollegeResponse HBCU-Center for Excellence: Initiative Core Strategies: 1. Enhance understanding of suicide prevention 2. Increase knowledge base on behavioral health issues 3. Identify and screen for risk factors 4. Enhance collaboration within/across campuses on mental health issues CFE Partnership with Screening for Mental Health CollegeResponse promotes the prevention, early detection and treatment of prevalent, often under-diagnosed and treatable mental health disorders and alcohol problems through in-person and online screening. For more than a decade, the program has offered affordable and practical risk management tools and information that educate, assess, and connect students with appropriate resources. The versatility of the program allows for collaboration across campus from counseling departments to student affairs and residential life and student organizations.

Spectrum of Prevention

Campus/Student Mental Health An Opportunity To: Redefine: addressing depression, anxiety, alcohol use and eating disorders as instrumental to the goals of student affairs. Relocate: the locus of alcohol and mental health prevention and screening efforts beyond just student health/counseling centers. Reconceptualize: health/mental health as an inspirational opportunity for collegial discourse, new partnerships with students, collaborative projects and cross-campus coalitions. Who will you engage for this endeavor? Which level of prevention will you choose to focus on?

Prevention Spectrum In Use Influencing Policies: SGA policies Medical amnesty policies Pre-matriculation education includes AOD, disordered eating and depression. Require screening for sanctioned students Changing Organizational Practices: CollegeResponse screening forms/online screening link available in multiple locations: counseling, advising, writing centers, library, student life Healthy food options at late night events Access to screening in athletics and fitness centers Brief interventions with RN s and NP s. Fostering Coalitions: Brown Bag lunch discussions with residential staff, faculty, etc Partner with psychology/social work departments, service learning Engage pastoral staff and/or spiritual campus advisors

Prevention Spectrum In Use Educating Providers: Provide brief forums for faculty, academic advisors, coaches Enhance RA training and train Orientation staff Train student group advisors on signs/symptoms & how to make referrals Train healthcare providers in brief interventions (NIAAA Curriculum) Promoting Community Education: Highlight health/mental health in faculty directories Conduct prevention training at faculty/staff meetings Design a wellness resource section of library with screening information Partner with OHRL, student groups, high profile events for in-person programming Increase visibility of online screening Strengthening Individual Knowledge & Skills: Screen for alcohol, depression and eating disorders at the health center Include the EAT 26 in BASICS appointments Develop applied and service learning projects with a health/mental health focus Implement DORA for all 1 st year students

DORA: Peer Based Intervention The DORA Program includes a self-risk assessment, a personal introduction to a campus counselor, and stresses the importance of treatment utilization. These components help connect students to professional counseling resources on campus. Awareness through education is a large part of the DORA Program. Students will learn the signs and symptoms of depression and suicide and gain a personal ability to begin a conversation about helpseeking. Participants gain a sense of empathy for their peers, confidence toward help-giving and a sense of social connectedness. This knowledge leads to an improvement in peer support. Students participate in open dialogue focusing on reducing stigma, increasing peer activism and encouraging a sense of social responsibility to ensure health and safety on campus.

Online Screening Students connect with friends, register for classes, get course information and check on grades all while online. Now they can check their mental health too. CollegeResponse offers anonymous online screening tools, which are an effective way to help students who may be struggling with a mental health issue. Mood and Anxiety Disorders Online Screening Tool Addresses depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Eating Disorders Online Screening Tool Addresses anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder Alcohol Online Screening Tool Addresses binge drinking and alcohol use disorders The Online Screening Tools Feature: Customizable welcome message that includes school logo, colors, and campus photo Customizable referral information to connect students with school-specific resources Unique and simple URL that can be embedded on campus website, ed to students and promoted through social media networks.
