2 QIBT Your pathway to GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY Your future starts here Upon the successful completion of a Diploma, QIBT students are eligible for entry into second year of the equivalent bachelor degree at Griffith University, in Brisbane or the Gold Coast. A supportive learning environment, including small class sizes and extra tuition time, ensures students receive individual attention from their teachers (see page 8). Over 13,500 QIBT graduates have continued their studies at Griffith University, with an average pass rate of 90 percent. 3 1 YOUR PATHWAY TO A DEGREE FROM GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY OVERVIEW Queensland Institute of Business and Technology (QIBT) provides you with the closest alternative to direct entry to a degree at Griffith University. 7 5 Kick start your global career OVERVIEW Griffith s Careers and Employment Service assists both students and graduates to find career direction, prepare for their job search, find job vacancies and work experience, and launch their global career. Students can make one-on-one appointments with a careers advisor; attend free seminars on resume writing, job-search strategies or interview techniques; attend the yearly careers fairs at the Gold Coast and Nathan campuses; and search for job vacancies on the Griffith Careerboard. Griffith University also provides an Industry Mentoring Program, designed to help students transition into the workplace by matching postgraduate students from a range of disciplines with professionals in the same career field. Participants have the opportunity to take part in professional development activities, share research and expertise and engage in social activities.
8 6 QIBT Your pathway to GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY Launch your global career at Griffith University (continued) Griffith University campuses QIBT students attend classes at Griffith s Mt Gravatt and Gold Coast campuses and are welcomed as part of the Griffith University community. Mount Gravatt Adjacent to Nathan campus with panoramic views of Brisbane, the Mt Gravatt campus is the social sciences and humanities hub. The campus hosts 5,000 students and is the base for research into critical social issues, including education and suicide prevention. The campus boasts an extensive range of sporting facilities, including the Griffith Aquatic and Fitness Centre, and the Griffith University Tennis Centre. Additional oncampus facilities include basketball and netball courts, campus bookshop, cafés and food outlets, plus a general store. The Mt Gravatt campus is conveniently located on the South East Busway and is also connected to the Nathan campus by a free inter-campus bus service. The Mt Gravatt Residential College offers catered on-campus accommodation for students, with three meals per day provided in the college dining rooms. Gold Coast Griffith s Gold Coast campus is one hour s drive south of Brisbane and just a 10 minute drive from the region s world famous beaches. This campus is in the final stages of a major building program which has already seen the completion of tennis, basketball and beach volleyball courts, an extension to the campus library, and the new Griffith Health Centre. The recently completed Business Building includes a fully operational mock trading room. The Griffith Health Centre and Gold Coast University Hospital form the core of the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct. This world-class health, medical research and teaching facility brings all of Griffith s health programs - including medicine, psychology, dentistry and nutrition - under one roof, offering students enhanced opportunities for multidisciplinary education. The Gold Coast campus is regularly serviced by public transport including bus and a new light rail network which connects the campus with the city s retail and restaurant hubs, and beaches. Privately owned and operated on-campus accommodation is available at the Griffith University Village, offering one-bedroom studios to fivebedroom apartments. On-campus services and facilities On-campus facilities at Griffith s campuses include campus libraries and bookshops, 24 hour computer labs, post office, hairdresser, pharmacy, prayer rooms, ATMs, banking facilities, medical services and numerous cafeterias and cafés. 10 8 QIBT Your pathway to GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY QIBT is your pathway to Griffith University QIBT provides a well-designed degree pathway leading to a selection of progressive and professionally recognised degrees at Griffith University. So with a slight change in pathway, students can still achieve their study and career goals. As a QIBT student, you are so close to Griffith you are already there. QIBT is based on campus at Griffith University s Mt Gravatt and Gold Coast campuses, where students have full access to university facilities and study the same advanced subject matter as first year students who attain direct entry. Upon completion of the QIBT Diploma graduates not only have a tertiary-level qualification recognised worldwide, but will have completed the equivalent of the first year of the Griffith University degree. Students are well-equipped to seamlessly transition to second year* in the mainstream university environment armed with confidence plus the extra skills and knowledge needed for successful completion of a Griffith Bachelor degree. As a QIBT student, you will also benefit from: the expertise of QIBT teachers, many of whom have either a master s degree or PhD in their discipline area, and also lecture at Griffith University great value for money QIBT tuition fees are competitively priced full access to all Griffith University services and facilities on the Mount Gravatt and Gold Coast campuses, including libraries, computer labs, sporting facilities, on-campus accommodation and employment services small class sizes, typically with a maximum of 50 students in each lecture and 25 students in each tutorial or workshop, to ensure you receive individual attention from your teachers a single visa for the duration of your studies, covering your QIBT program, your Griffith degree program and your English language program (if applicable). * To be eligible to enter second year of a Griffith University degree you must successfully complete the diploma program and achieve all grade-point average (GPA) entry requirements. The first year of study may not be equivalent to the first year of the relevant Griffith University Bachelor degree for all programs. QIBT is a registered higher education provider and is approved by the Australian Government. 12 10 QIBT Your pathway to GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY QIBT is your pathway to Griffith University (continued) QIBT offers diploma programs in the following study areas: Biosciences Commerce Criminology and Criminal Justice Engineering Graphic Design Health Care Health Sciences Hotel Management Information Technology Media and Communication QIBT also offers a Certificate IV Tertiary Preparation Program. An Associate Degree in Commerce and Business; a two-year program leading to the third year of a Griffith University Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Business degree is also available. Program schedule QIBT operates three semesters each year, with intakes in February, June and October. The Certificate IV program consists of eight academic courses, and takes two semesters to complete full-time, with part-time study options also available. The diploma programs consist of eight courses studied over two or three semesters with part-time study options also available. Each course in the diploma is worth 10 credit points. By successfully completing a diploma program you will earn 80 credit points (equivalent to one year s full-time study) towards a relevant Griffith University bachelor s degree. Mode of study QIBT students study on-campus, and will attend a combination of lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, group work and other practical activities, depending on the field of study. On-campus learning means students are required to attend the contact hours specified for each course, which is generally four hours per course per week. QIBT s face-to-face study mode provides a very visual, interactive and social university experience. Students who have completed the Diploma of Commerce or Diploma of Hotel Management receive credit for first-year of the Associate Degree and enter in second-year. The Associate Degree in Commerce and Business is aimed at students who complete a QIBT Diploma of Commerce or Hotel Management with a GPA of less than 4.0. You must complete a further eight courses and obtain a GPA of 4.0 for entry into the third year of the equivalent Griffith bachelor s degree. What is a GPA? Each student who completes a QIBT diploma will receive a grade-point average (GPA). This is a score between 0 and 7.0 that reflects average academic achievement during a program. GPA calculations are especially relevant where a GPA requirement is part of the entry criteria for a Griffith University bachelor degree program. GPA examples: A student who achieves a pass grade in eight courses with no failing grades would have a GPA of 4.0 A student who achieves four pass grades and four credit grades across eight courses would have a GPA of 4.5 Assessment methods Assessment is a central element of curriculum and integral to supporting student learning. Assessment is considered not just as an evaluation tool or process used by teachers to determine the level of individual performance; it is used to facilitate students learning. Formative and summative assessment opportunities support QIBT s diverse group of students in development of knowledge and understanding of discipline practices and systems. Assessment methods adopted at QIBT take a variety of forms appropriate to the learning outcomes. Assessments are criteria based which requires desired learning outcomes to be clearly specified and the assessment grade is a measure of the extent to which the learning outcomes have been achieved. Assessments may include individual or collaborative achievement or both. Assessment methods and desired criteria are clearly set out in the course documentation available to students at the commencement of each course. Methods take a variety of forms and include but are not exclusive to the following methods: Written exams Projects Portfolios Written assignments including essays, reports and case studies Presentations Debates Quizzes Tutorial activities Laboratory activities and reports Tutorial participation

A range of support services and programs are available to ensure you achieve your academic potential while developing personally and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. These services are available to all students and are provided at no additional cost. Academic and welfare guidance Assistance is never far away! A free and confidential welfare and counseling service is available to all QIBT students. Our Student Counsellor and Welfare Advisor can meet with you to discuss any problems or concerns. If anything is preventing you from enjoying your academic, social or personal life, seeing the Student Counsellor and Welfare Advisor is often a very good way to start resolving these issues. Student Advisors are also available to assist with your academic progress. Airport reception A QIBT representative will be available to welcome you when you arrive at the airport and transfer you to your accommodation. This service must be booked in advance. Clubs and societies Griffith University Campus Life at Mt Gravatt campus and the Griffith University Student Guild on the Gold Coast campus organises various events and activities throughout the year, including social sport matches, free movie nights and lunchtime events such as table tennis competitions. Learning and language support We understand that the transition to university studies can be difficult, so we have a range of learning support services available. If you are finding things difficult, we encourage you to access these services as soon as possible. They include lecturer consultations; help with assignments; a free Language Development Program to improve your English skills; Peer Assisted Learning (PAL), where high-achieving students can provide academic and cultural support; and workshops on time management, researching, academic writing and exam preparation. Orientation and enrolment Your orientation program will provide all the information you need to settle in at QIBT as quickly as possible. Attendance at orientation is compulsory, and it s a great chance to select and enrol in courses, meet fellow students and QIBT staff, get your student ID card and textbooks and familiarise yourself with the campus. Peer Mentor program During orientation, you will be introduced to your friendly student mentors who can help you adjust to university life. We encourage you to stay in contact with these mentors, as they can help with any questions or concerns you may have. Safety and security Security is provided on all Griffith University campuses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Located around the campus are telephones for contacting Campus Security, who can arrange an escort to take you to your vehicle or on-campus accommodation, particularly on weekends or after dark. Student experience Taking part in a range of extracurricular activities is an important part of student life. Each week of each semester at QIBT is packed full of great activities, events and academic enhancement sessions that are designed especially for you to get the most out of your time at QIBT. Almost all of these activities and sessions are free and they are easy to get involved with. Student Representative Group The Student Liaison Committee (SLC) gives staff and students an opportunity to meet and discuss issues that affect them. The committee consists of academic and administrative staff and students from each of the programs. Many SLC initiatives have already improved the quality of life for many students, and participation is greatly encouraged as a way for you to gain valuable meeting and public-speaking skills. Transition to Griffith University Each semester, QIBT organises information sessions for students progressing from their QIBT program to their degree program at Griffith University. These sessions are presented by university staff who provide information about admissions, programs and transition. Every semester, we also hold a graduation celebration for students who successfully complete their Tertiary Preparation, diploma and degree programs at QIBT.
