1 November th Ave. No., Brooklyn Center, MN Phone: , fax: Principal Corner Greetings Garden City Families, Our School Improvement Plan for the school year is now available to view on the Garden City webpage. This year s School Improvement Plan is aggressive. We are raising expectations for everyone so we grow student learning and achievement at our school. The plan focuses on Reading, Math, and Climate/Behavior. We are adding a few new ideas to our plan but we are truly focused on improving our teaching practice; doing what we do better. Here are few focus areas of our School Improvement Plan that are new: Creating a balanced approach to math; with more small group teaching and learning opportunities in the classroom. Culturally Responsive Teaching; add ways for students to see themselves and their cultures in the classroom and within the lesson. Thinking Maps; a new way to create critical and visual thinking opportunities for our students. In the next couple of weeks, you will be able to see examples of student Thinking Maps posted in the atrium of the school. Families continue to be a center piece of our School Improvement Plan. This year we will have a number of family events and we will also continue our Families to Families workshops. I think of student success as a three legged chair; with family, school, and community helping to keep the chair of student learning upright and strong. Without each leg doing its part, the chair would tip over. Your participation in conferences, events, and asking your child what did you learn about today? makes a difference and helps keep all three of the chair legs upright and strong. Thanks to those of you that attended your learner s Fall Conferences. I look forward to seeing you at one or all of the upcoming November events. Principal Branch

2 Garden City Points of Pride At Garden City, we recognize and celebrate the goodness we see in children each day! As part of our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, we recognize students who display the BLUE expectations: Be respectful Learn responsibly Use self-control, so Everyone achieves! Each day, when staff members see students showing positive behaviors, they give the students a blue slip as recognition. One student from the classroom takes these slips to a special jar in the office where they are collected for the week. At the end of each week, two students slips are drawn from the jar. These students take the traveling plaques to their rooms for the week as special recognition. Their photos are taken and are mounted on the Garden City Dolphins Making A Splash display in the front hall. The following students received the traveling plaques during October: Junior Zamorano (Mrs. Montero) Evelyn Her (Mrs. Thompson) Dhavindra Ali (Mrs. Knutson) Ethel Cooper (Ms. Erdman) Jennifer Jimenez Arroyo (Mr. Holtz) Danook Thongvathsa (Ms. Huggett)

3 SEPTEMBER WALL OF FAME In addition to recognizing students daily and weekly, we have created a monthly Wall of Fame that highlights one student from each classroom who has shown outstanding effort, consistency, quality work, academic or behavioral improvement, or utstanding character. Teachers write several sentences about the students, and these tributes are on display with the students photos. The following students are recognized for their outstanding character during September. Their tributes were on display on the Wall of Fame throughout October: September Wall of Fame Teacher Room Student Booke 7 Sabrina Vang Bottolene 8 Gao Her Erdman 47 Natalie Yang Fix 44 Brandon Velez Holtz 34 Lala Yang Huggett 46 Tsaag Xiong Jedinak 5 Aunesti Fullilove Jeffcoat 28 Ken Chang Knutson 30 Joshua Vu Lundy 3 Ether Mason Montero 38 Jasmin Higginbotham Mueller 42 Val Huerta Savitski 6 Sherlyn Popoca Pena Thompson 2 Grace Kaspar Wieser 45 Shuahla Xiong Wiinanen 9 Nae Nae Holmes Williams 4 Mariam Kamara Independent School District 279 does not discriminate on the basis of disability.
