I started my career at Johnson Elementary, where I taught for 7 years, and then transferred to Audubon K-8. I have a three year old son, Emerson and I am expecting a girl the end of January.

3 Rule 1: Listen when your teacher is talking. Rule 2: Follow directions quickly. Rule 3: Follow class routines. Rule 4: Make thoughtful choices. Rule 5: Be safe, be honest, and be respectful.

4 In the classroom there is a chart with seven colors. Each day every child has a clothespin with his/her name on it, which starts on the Ready to Learn section. As students make good choices, they will move their clothespin up one section. If they break one of the Audubon K- 8 School rules (or Room 8 Rules), the child will move their clothespin down. If a second rule is broken, they will be asked to move their clip down again. Students can move their clip up through-out the day to encourage outstanding behavior.

11 In second grade, children move from a little-kid focus on print to a bigkid focus on meaning. The first unit, Second-Grade Reading Growth Spurt, teaches children to take charge of their reading, drawing on everything they know to figure out hard words, understand author s craft, and build big ideas about the books they read. Children learn that books can be their teachers in the second unit, Becoming Experts: Reading Nonfiction, in which they learn more about familiar topics and grow understanding of new topics while working on word solving, vocabulary development, and comparing and contrasting information across texts.

12 In the third unit, Bigger Books Mean Amping Up Reading Power, children learn strategies to build three foundational reading skills fluency, understanding figurative language, and comprehension. In the final unit for second grade, Series Book Clubs, children work within book clubs to study author s craft to understand ways authors use word choice, figurative language, punctuation, and even patterns to construct a series and evoke feelings in readers.

13 Reading at home is very important for helping your child become a reader. Your child has a reading log as part of their weekly homework. Please let me know if your child needs to borrow books from the classroom library. In addition, your child will be able to check out a book from the school library on Fridays.

14 As a class we will go to the library on Fridays from 1:25-2:00. Students will hear a book a read aloud by Mrs. Starkie and will then check out a book. *Please make sure your child returns their library book weekly.

16 In Lessons from the Masters: Improving Narrative Writing students learn how to create engaging narratives by stretching out small moments and writing in detail. Unit 2, Lab Reports and Science Books, uses inspirational nonfiction texts to help students design and write about experiments and other scientific information. Unit 3, Writing About Reading, has students read closely and gather evidence from texts to craft persuasive arguments. The final unit, Poetry: Big Thoughts in Small Packages helps children explore and savor language. Students learn to use line breaks to express the meaning and rhythm they intend and use visualization and figures of speech to make their writing more clear and powerful.

21 We will have the opportunity to use Android tablets every week. We will use this technology to research, practice, and show our learning in a variety of ways. If possible, please send a pair of headphones to school for your child s personal use.

22 We have assemblies on the blacktop every Monday morning. Parents are welcome to attend assemblies. During assemblies we are practicing our audience manners and we are listening to important information. In addition, we have several performance assemblies per year.

23 Students are encouraged to use the bathroom during class breaks (before school, recess, lunch time). However, if a child requires the use of a bathroom at any other time, they simply need to receive permission from the teacher. This is for safety reasons.

24 If your child has any medical conditions, please ensure that you have filled out the appropriate paperwork so that the school is fully aware of the situation. If your child has any food allergies, please let me know..

25 Students will receive a Homework Packet every Monday, and it will be due Friday.
