2 What are ESL and Bilingual Education Programs in the Madison Metropolitan School District? ESL and Bilingual Education Programs help students acquire social and academic English proficiency. ESL and Bilingual programs provide students access to the grade level curriculum and standards. ESL and Bilingual Education programs may support instruction and curriculum in student's primary language. Bilingual Programs are transitional and build upon student s primary language skills in Spanish. This support helps students acquire English more readily and transition into instruction in English. Nuestro Mundo Community School (NMCS) offers dual-language instruction (English & Spanish) for elementary students grades K-5. Who are English Language Learners (ELLs) in the Madison School District? There are over 3000 students who are English Language Learners who receive ESL and Bilingual Education services in MMSD. Over 50 language groups are represented in MMSD. ESL and Bilingual staff assist students until they are fully English proficient at their grade level. English proficiency progress and ESL and Bilingual Education services for each student are reported annually to parents. Who Teaches English Language Learners in MMSD? Students who are English Language Learners are taught by a variety of school staff including general education teachers, ESL and Bilingual teachers and specialist teachers (art, music, gym, library) MMSD currently has Bilingual Resource Specialists who, through interpretation and translation support students and families in the languages of Spanish, Hmong, Lao, Khmer, Albanian, Korean, Chinese and Tibetan The Madison Metropolitan School District currently has ESL teachers, Bilingual Resource Teachers and Specialists, and Bilingual Classroom Teachers, kindergarten through 12th grade.

MMSD cuenta con más de 3,000 estudiantes "English Language Learners", quienes reciben servicios ESL y de educación bilingüe. Hay más de 50 idiomas reprsentados en MMSD. El personal ESL y bilingüe ayuda a los estudiantes hasta que éstos alcancen la proficiencia completa en el inglés al nivel de su grado.
