1 Greater Detroit's Original Cultural Events Weekly, Thursday, November 16, 2017 DOWNTOWN MONITOR America's Thanksgiving Day Parade Set for 91st Year Founded by J.L. Hudson's, Downtown Detroit s legendary department store in 1924, the same year that Macy s began its parade in New York City, Detroit s first Thanksgiving parade featured horses pulling a float decorated with Mother Goose, four papier-mâché heads and seven marching bands. Now, recognized as one of the best Thanksgiving parades in the country, America's Thanksgiving Parade presented by Art Van, celebrates its 91st anniversary in Downtown Detroit on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23. This year's theme is Woodward!! Avenue of Dreams! Since the days of horses and weather-sensitive cardboard floats, the iconic Parade has treated millions of spectators to celebrities, new magnificent floats designed and built by The Parade Company, giant balloons, marching bands, the Distinguished Clown Corps, doling out candy and good cheer to all parade attendees, and Big Head Corps and much more. First televised locally in 1948, on Thursday, November 23, the Parade goes live on TV at 10 a.m. at Grand River and Woodward. The Parade is televised live locally on WDIV-TV, Local 4 and is syndicated nationally to over 65 million households broadcast in more than 160 cities across the country. The Parade Company has a star-studded celebrity line-up to accompany parade Grand Marshals Big Sean and Carmen Harlan (both pictured). This year s lineup includes: Charttopping Warner Nashville recording artist and Michigan native Frankie Ballard, Emmy award-winning producer and drummer Karriem Riggins, star of Disney Channel s K.C. Undercover Trinitee Stokes and two-time Olympian Johnny Weir. Liam Fennecken of the Tony-nominated Broadway Musical, School of Rock will kick-off the live WDIV broadcast with a special performance, compliments of Broadway in Detroit. The 3-mile long parade steps off at 8:50 a.m. at Kirby and Woodward, adjacent to the Detroit Institute of Arts and ends at Congress Street south of Campus Martius Park.

3 Thursday, November 16, 2017 DOWNTOWN MONITOR 3 George B. Eichorn SPORTING LIFE Food, Family and Football: Detroit's Thanksgiving Tradition A holiday tradition dating to 1934 (that game is pictured), is renewed again on Thanksgiving Day as the Detroit Lions host the Minnesota Vikings at Ford Field. Names and memories have highlighted Turkey Day NFL action here. Bobby Layne, Joe Schmidt, Lem Barney, Charlie Sanders, Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford have all figured prominently in Lions victories - and a few losses - in front of crowds at Briggs Stadium (later called Tiger Stadium), the Pontiac Silverdome and now, Ford Field. We caught up with a few folks to get their thoughts on this holiday tradition in Detroit. Lomas Brown, former Lions offensive lineman: We FREE gas, electric, hot/cold water, sewer and trash removal FREE central heat and air Controlled access entrance with intercom Sliding door to private balcony* Gas stove and frost free refrigerator Oversized windows Section 8 Welcome always took pride in playing on Thanksgiving. We always knew we were the only show in town; the only show on television with the early game. Pretty much the whole nation was watching us, and we would always go all out! Bill Ford Jr., son of Lions owner Martha Ford: This game belongs to the fans. It belongs to the fans who grew up in Detroit and no longer live here but plan their Thanksgiving around the game. It s a 78 year-old tradition. Most of the (NFL) teams weren t even in existence 78 years ago. It s a big, big tradition in our area, and I think it would be absolutely criminal to ever lose it. Lem Barney, Lions defensive back and NFL Hall of Famer: It s always been great because of the tradition of it. Unfortunately, (some NFL owners) have tried to dismantle the great tradition Formerly Medical Center Senior Tower, we are located in a vibrant Midtown Detroit location across from the Detroit Medical Center, Theatre District and Cultural Center. But thank God for the commissioner who said that the Lions as well as the (Dallas) Cowboys will continue the tradition of Thanksgiving Day play. Jack Ebling, Lansing-based radio show host: Probably the strangest memory I have is from the 1980 Lions/Bears game when (Bears QB) Vince Evans scored on a quarterback draw with no time left to force overtime. Before anyone could get back from the bathroom, Chicago won on a 95-yard kickoff return by David Williams. I remember having my family in the stands with big plans for a holiday gathering! My column was all but written with two minutes left. Some two hours later, I was still trying to write something that made sense. Needless to say, I wasn t too popular at (the late) dinner. Scott Morganroth, South Florida-based sports writer: Whether I went to the games or watched them with friends out of state, Thanksgiving is to Detroit as the Rose Bowl is to Pasadena, California and I ve been to that game too a complete package with a big football game preceded by a huge parade on a festive day. Personally, my Turkey Day football memory came in 1970, when the famed Purple People Eaters of the Minnesota Vikings stormed into Tiger Stadium. Led by all-pros Carl Eller and Alan Page, the Vikes overcame a fall snowstorm to shut out the Lions My friend Bill Bitonti and I had great seats, protected from the snow showers, yet got saddled with a turkey of a game. Let s hope this Lions/Vikings game will be a good one for local fans as Minnesota presently holds a two-game lead in the race for the NFC North. Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m. on FOX (Channel 2 locally) and WJR-AM 760. The other two NFL games on Thanksgiving are: Los Angeles Chargers/Dallas Cowboys at 4:30 p.m. and the New York Giants/Washington Redskins at 8:30 p.m. Reach George Eichorn at

4 4 DOWNTOWN MONITOR Thursday, November 16, 2017 The Vivace program on Sunday , dedicated to Leonard Bernstein, turned out to be very delightful. The voices of Daniel Gross (baritone) and Nicole Greenbridge Joseph (soprano) meshed well together with the piano accompaniment of Kevin Bylsma. The program centered mostly on well-known songs that were composed by Bernstein. Those that might have been new to the audience fit into the general spirituality of the evening. Leonard Bernstein was celebrated also by the singing of Happy Birthday by all present. The next program of Vivace will be on Sunday, April 8, 2018, 7:30 p.m., featuring bassist Rick Robinson and the Cut-Time Sinfonia. For info, call Joyce Cheresh at (248) or Ann Sipher at (248) Leonard Bernstein is being celebrated in Ann Arbor this week (his centennial) with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. For further information, check UMS.org. MOT s current production of Mozart s Marriage of Figaro is totally delightful. Opening night took place on Saturday evening, The sets seemed to serve as a frame around the stage, allowing more space for the singers to show individuality. This also allowed for a clearer presentation of the plot (Stage Director, Michael Albano). The hair pieces that the singers wore allowed for exceptional character development, enhancing the personalities (Wig and Makeup Design, Joanne Middleton Weaver). The acting was most convincing. I won t elaborate here on the comical plot of this well-known opera. Dr. Bartolo (Matthew Burns) SYMPHONIC NEWS Ruth's Music Notes Ruth Crystal-Zaromp behaved in a very dignified and respectful manner befitting the standard of his position. Marcelina (Susanne Mentzer) tended to be more common in comparison with a false modesty that was comic. Barbarina (Grosse Pointe native, Angela Theis, pictured), one of the less emphasized characters in this opera, came through vividly with beautiful music to match. Figaro (Aubrey Allcock) seemed to come through in a more serious manner than usually. His costume was fitting his character and he certainly was not roguish. Don Basilio (Michael Day) came through as a high tenor, a little strange but not unacceptable. Showings continue through Sunday, November 19. Check MichiganOpera. org. This coming weekend, the DSO conductor Fabien Gabel will be appearing together with pianist Bertrand Chamayou. The program includes two pieces by Richard Strauss, his Don Juan and his Burleske. These two pieces were composed by Strauss when he was in his younger years. The Burleske is a work for piano and orchestra, but in a more loose form than a formal concerto. Symphony No. 2 by Johannes Brahms will conclude this eclectic program. On Friday, November 17, 7:30 p.m., pianist Alvin Waddles will be performing at the Seligman Center, located at 13 Mile and Lahser, Beverly Hills. He will be presented together with the Rackham Choir and other choral ensembles from Country Day School. Among the works presented are Brahms Liebeslieder waltzes. The Holiday Home Tour only adds to the ambiance by giving visitors an opportunity to see the inside of these one of a kind historic homes. The Indian Village 2017 Holiday Gala & Tour will be held on Saturday, December 2nd for the Gala and Sunday, December 3rd for the tour. Guests will tour 5 beautiful historic homes decorated magnificently for the holidays, ending at a surprise location, said Renata Taylor, Chairperson of the event. The VIP Reception will be held Saturday, December 2nd. VIP Gala Guests will experience an elegant Strolling Dinner and open bar in one of the beautifully decorated homes. Enjoy live music and tour the homes and the Indian Village neighborhood by Motor coach. Festive holiday attire is suggested. This is a limited event please make reservations early. Tickets are $100 for the Gala. Tickets are $40.00 per person, for the Holiday Tour on Sunday, December 3rd. There will be various Tour Times available from 1 pm 4 pm. All tours leave from Iroquois Avenue Christ Lutheran Church, located at 2411 Iroquois (corner of Iroquois & Vernor). The tour offers just a sample of the quality of architecture and design that you will see on this year s tour. It s one kind of experience to drive through the neighborhood and see these elegant homes from the outside, but seeing the interior and learning the history from well informed docents offers a rare opportunity. Just one of the exciting homes on the tour for the first time, is the R. Hirt Jr. home (pictured), built by the owner of the famous Eastern Market cheese/chocolate shop by the same name (now DeVries & Co 1887). The original owner, Rudolf Hirt, had it built in 1915, designed by the well-known MacFarlane, Maul & Lentz architect firm of Detroit. This grand holiday event is sponsored by the Indian Village Woman s Garden Club. Proceeds from the event will go to the Artelia Bowne Court Scholarship Fund. It is a very exciting and wonderful event that benefits college students, said Betty Roberts, member of the IVWGC. 8 8 DOWNTOWN MONITOR Thursday, November 16, 2017 CINEMA CULTURE Justice League! A Review by Paul Arlon I ve been a comic book collector since I was a little kid. When I could ride my sporty English Racer 3-speed down the line to the little neighborhood grocery store and buy used comic books for a nickel apiece. Those were the days. When DC and Marvel had the only real superhero comics, and every other publisher with a character draped in a tight get-up with some kind of power was just a wannabe, vying for a piece of my shiny quarter allowance. So, not being unhumble here, but I m probably more well versed about the original backstories of DC, Marvel, and a lot of other comic book characters, than is the average bear. And, as it s been the way of Hollywood, almost always, to re-create any strongly established character anew whenever they possess the rights to the material, I ve been mostly reluctant to fully embrace the new take on my old favorites. Take Batman for example. The Caped Crusader was all Gothedup first by Tim Burton, then thrown into complete brooding darkness by artist Frank Miller and director-writer Christopher Nolan. When Zack Snyder began his interpretation of Superman, he added a bit of mental dissonance to his Man of Steel, making Superman (played by Henry Cavill) almost hesitant to take up the charter of the world s most powerful superbeing. In Snyder s story, Clark Kent didn t know whether to reveal his abilities, or to just sit out an alien attack on our planet. He finally decided to save earth. Snyder followed up with his filmed-in-detroit Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, whereupon he continued the unsmiling Batman mystique, (this time with Ben Affleck), the troubled and restrained Superman, and then threw in the introduction of Diana Prince (Gal Gadot), as Wonder Woman. Snyder s production of the Patty Jenkins female-directed feature Wonder Woman was the big splash of the summer season, and the best effort from DC and Warner Bros. until now. All three of these previous Zack Snyder-influenced DC movies were just lead-ups to the big enchilada, opening over this weekend Justice League. For me, the best DC comic book translation on film, to date. Starring Affleck as Batman, Cavill as Superman, Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, and Ray Fisher as the man-machine Cyborg. With Flash, Superman, Cyborg, Wonder Woman, Batman and Aquaman a script by Chris Terrio and the estimable Joss Whedon, and directed by Snyder, there isn t much about this super- ALL NEW PRODUCTION! The Nutcracker The Nutcracker is now a 21st Century spectacle! Bright, high-tech and filled with imagery! David Lyman, Cincinnati Enquirer at the Detroit Opera House Sat., Nov. 25 at 2:30 & 7:30 p.m. Sun., Nov. 26 at 2:30 p.m. Matinees Feature Family Friendly Activities Featuring The Cincinnati Ballet with LIVE Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra Conducted by Carmon De Leone MichiganOpera.org or Dance Season Sponsor hero movie with which I can take issue. It s the same basic story earth is being attacked by a host of fear-feeding flying aliens, marshaled by a vicious demigod, Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds), who is on a mission to unify a source of ancient planet-destroying power. Dang if I haven t heard that one before, but this is well done, well acted, and exhibits the spiffiest special effects ever put into a film. Every word of description past what I ve just written would venture strongly into spoiler territory, but what I will say, is that even if some of the characters' traits and backstories may differ from the comic books, it s not a detraction. I m a fan of this version of Justice League.
