1 CURRICULUM B.A. (Honours) Mass Communication ORDINANCES: 1. The nomenclature of the Bachelor Degree Course will be B.A. (Honours) Mass Communication. The duration of this course shall be of three years (i.e. three academic sessions). 2. The Medium of Instruction : The medium of Instruction will be both Hindi and English. 3. The Medium of Examination : The medium of examination will be either Hindi or English. 4. Eligibility to apply for Admission : Any candidate who have passed Intermediate or examinations at least with 45% marks will be eligible to apply for admission to B.A. (Honours) Mass Communication. 5. Admission Procedure : 1. Admission to the course will be held on the basis of Academic Merit or Merit of Combined Written Entrance Test conducted by the university. 2. The entrance test will be of 200 marks and will include following papers- (a) General Knowledge & Current Awareness, (b) Language Proficiency (Hindi and English). 3. The entrance test fee will be deposited in the university account. Expenses of the test and external experts will be met by the University. 4. Admission on the basis of Academic Merit may be made if the University finds it convenient or as per its policy.
2 5. The admission procedure will be uniform for all the Study Centre. 6. The nature of the admission procedure will be decided by the Convener of Board of Studies in Mass Communication, Dean of the Faculty after the approval of the Vice Chancellor of the University. 6. Reservation: The reservation will be as per Uttarakhand Government Rules as followed by the University. 7. Intake: The intake of candidate to B.A. (Honours) Mass Communication Course should be exceed 40 candidates at any Study Centre. The intake for the Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication will be 40 candidates while the intake for other Study Centres will be as per approval of the State Government after the recommendation of the concerning affiliating panel which may be less than 40 but should not exceed Fee and Resource Generation: Centre for Journalism and Mass Communication, University Campus, Srinagar (Garhwal): I. Every candidate selected for the admission to B.A. (Honours) Mass Communication shall have to pay Campus Admission and Monthly fee as scheduled for other Bachelor Degree Courses of the Campus of respective faculty for each year. II. In addition to the normal fee (Campus Admission & Monthly fee) as mentioned above, all the candidates will have to pay Rs. 2000/= (Two Thousand) as Practical and Profession fee as special contribution for development of practical facilities and professional efficiency including Guest Lectures.
3 III. Before depositing Campus Admission and Monthly fee, the candidate must deposit the Practical and Profession fee at the Centre for Journalism and Mass Communicaiton. IV. The above fee structure (point 1,2 & 3) will not be applicable for the Selffinanced Affiliated Study Centres. V. The fee structure of the Self-financed Study Centres shall be fixed by the respective Study Centres/Institutes after the approval of the State Government following the University procedure as per norms. 9. Pass Marks and Division: 1. The minimum pass marks in each theory paper and Internal should be 40% separately. If a student fails in theory (external) or internal examination of any paper then he/she will be treated failed in the concerning paper. 2. The minimum pass marks in practical and viva should be 40%. 3. The candidate should secure 45% marks in aggregate for passing the annual examination. 4. The candidate securing 45% marks in aggregate of all the three years but below 60% shall be declared to have passed in second division while the candidate securing 60% marks or more in aggregate shall be declared to have passed in first division. 5. The student will have to pass separately in internal assessment, theory and practical. 6. The internal/external marks ratio will be generally uniform for all papers as 25/ Internal marks will be forwarded to the University by the Study Centres at least 3 weeks prior to the commencement of the annual examination. 8. Distinction is to be mentioned if a candidate obtains a total of 75% marks or more in aggregate in a single attempt (without the award of grace marks to pass in any paper). 10. Grace Marks:
4 In each year a candidate can be awarded Grace Marks of not more than 5% of the theory marks, if he/she fails in only one theory paper but obtains the minimum aggregate marks required for passing without considering the Grace Marks. Grace Marks will not be awarded for internal assessment. (As per University direction if the 5% marks work out to be a fraction/decimal it will be rounded off to the next higher number e.g to be rounded off as 02 marks). 11. Number of Back Papers/Improvement Permitted: 1. Maximum two back papers/improvement will be allowed for one academic year. In case if a candidate fails in the annual examination he/she will have to pass back papers/improvement examination in order to get admission in the next class. 2. If a candidate fails in internal examination but secure pass marks in external (theory) examination of a paper then he/she should have to appear again for passing the both internal and external (theory) examination of the concerning paper, which will be treated as one back paper. 3. If students secure pass marks in internal examination of any paper but fails in external (theory) examination then he/she will have to appear only in external (theory) examination of the same paper, which will be treated as one back paper. 4. Candidates are allowed only one attempt in back papers. If a candidate fails in back paper examination also then he/she will have to pass all papers of the concerning academic year as ex-student. Without passing the examination of a year a candidate cannot be allowed for admission to the next year. 5. Candidate who have already passed the papers, but wishing to improve their performance can also appear in two back paper (theory) for improvement. 6. Candidates who have already passed the internal examinations shall not be permitted for back paper/improvement in internals. 7. When a candidate secures marks less then those obtained in the first attempt (applicable in case of improvement, not failure candidate) the best of the two marks will be considered for the purpose of the final results. Theory and practical shall be considered as separate papers, but where a paper consists of both theory
5 and practical, it will be treated as one paper. Hence a candidate can appear as an ex-student in practical/theory of both, as the case may be. In case of back, position in merit list will not be included. 8. Each of the theory paper and practical will be treated separately for back paper examination. 12. Maximum duration for completion of the course: An additional period of 02 year will be given to a student to complete B.A. (Honors) Mass Communication course in continuation if required. For example if the batch is of , then it should be completed till Course Structure: Each year of B.A. (Honors) Mass Communication will have six papers. Each paper will be of 100 marks. Out of these 75 marks will be for theory (external examination) and 25 marks for internal assessment. Besides these papers it will be obligatory for the students to qualify a compulsory paper of Environmental sciences in order to meet the requirement of the direction of the Hon ble Supreme Court and the subsequent order of the UGC, New Delhi otherwise Degree will not be awarded. This paper will be of 100 marks and is included with the course of IInd year.

UNIT-II Early effort in printing newspaper - types of newspaper contents characteristics; magazine characteristics and types; print media in India: an overview; book, as a medium of communication types of books book publishing in India. UNIT-III Early communication system in India first Indian newspaper; print media in nineteenth century; Indian press and Indian freedom movement brief history of major English and Indian language newspaper and magazine in India. UNIT-IV Ownership of print media types merits and demerits; organizational structure of newspaper function of the staff; editorial advertising, circulation of departments; patterns of newspaper ownership and management in India procedure top launch a publication; marketing practices in print media. UNIT-VI Press Commission Press Council; DAVP, INS, ABC, union of media men and media women professional organization PIB other public information agencies of both central and state government.
7 PAPER II: REPORTING AND EDITING 1 (Th A 25) News: Definition, news values, sources of news, news gathering methods. Reporting: :Principles of reporting, functions and responsibilities, writing news lead types of lead; body- technique of rewriting news agency copy. I Reporting : reporting techniques qualities of a reporter news-elements, sources types pitfalls and problems in reporting attribution off-the-record embargo pool reporting; follow-up advocacy, interpretation, investigation. II Reporting crime, court, society, culture, politics, commerce and business, education reporting; practical. V Editing: Definition, nature and need for editing: Principles of editing, editorial desk, functions of editorial desk, copy editing, preparation of copy for press style sheet editing symbols, proofreading symbols and their significance. Headlining principles, types and techniques. Function and qualification of a sub-editor and chief sub editor, copy selection and copy pasting, basic principle of translation. I Practical of reporting and editing.
8 PAPER III: WRITING FOR MASS MEDIA (Th A 25) Historical background of writing elements of language writing as coding of contents language for mediated communication. I Principles and methods of effective writing, rules of grammar, Sentence construction, paragraphing, narration; adjectives and adverb, tenses, sequence, logic. II Creating in writing features, articles, profiles, interview stories business writing, technical writing, letters. V Writing for target groups, special interest audiences. Translation techniques media reviews of arts, performing arts and cinema; practical exercises applicable to all units. Data Processing Concepts Data and information, data concepts, stages of data processing. PAPER IV: INDIAN CONSTITUTION AND MEDIA LAWS (Th A 25) Introduction of Indian Constitution, characteristics, preamble- directives of state policy, fundamental rights, fundamental duties, citizenship. I The Legislature- the Executives- the Cabinet- the Judiciary- powers and functions; The President, union list, concurrent list, emergency declaration, separation of powers.
9 II Media freedom media systems media economics and freedom; advertisers and pressure groups, lobbying, trade unionism; political parties; internal freedom. V Indian Constitution and freedom of mass media, reasonable restrictions, privileges, fair comment; laws defamations, concept of legislature, and court, censorship; political philosophies of media freedom; Press and Registration of Books Act, Official secrets- sedition- Drug and Magic remedies (Objectionable) Advertisements Act. 1954, obscenity, copyright, monopolies and restrictive trade practices, Press council, ombudsman, right to information, right to reply, codes of ethics, confidentiality of sources of information. PAPER- V: COMPUTER APPLICATION FOR MASS MEDIA (Th IA. 25) Introduction to Computer, Characteristics, Applications of Computers; History and generations of computers; types of computers; computers; organizations CPU and its functions; Input- output devices, functions of input units, output units, auxiliary storage and media, hardware and software. I Introduction to MS-Windows, features, concept of OLE; MS-Office and its applications; MS-Word with features, proofing tools, text formatting, working with graphics and web pages; MS-EXCEL with features working with formulas, working with graphs and chart, setting up worksheets for printing; Power pointdesign templates; notes, handouts and masters. II Photoshop working with layers, color selection, image adjustments, filters, different editing tools; different file format PSD, JPE, BMP, JPEG, PFD.
10 Pagemaker, working with text, page setup, formatting techniques, graphics and drawings. V Multimedia definitions, uses, multimedia and CD-ROM, pictures sounds and music, movies and animations, use of video broadcast, video standards; NTSC- PAL-SECAM-HDTV, video editing. Web- different web browsers, searching the web; Internet Introductions, evolution, basics of sending and receiving , specifics mail programs; Usenet newsgroup, article, newsreader, reading news via online service; legal challenges copyright issues; technology issues; social issues; economic issues ethical issues. PAPER VI: PUBLIC RELATIONS/CORPORATE COMMUNICATION (Th IA 25) Public Relations definitions PR as communication function history of PRgrowth of PR in India, PR, publicity, propaganda and public opinion PR as a management function. I Stages of PR-planning implementation-research-evaluation-pr practitioners and media relations-press conference-press releases-other PR tools. II Communication with publics-internal and external-community relations-employee relations; PR India-public and private sectors; PR counseling; PR agencies; PR and advertising-pr for media institutions. V Shareholder relations-dealer relations; PR for hospitals-pr for charitable institutions; defence PR; PR for NGOs; PR for political parties and celebrities; crisis management-case studies.
11 PR research technique - PR and law - PR and new technology - code of ethics for PR-international PR - professional organization of PR - emerging trends in PR. SECOND YEAR PAPER VII: INTRODUCTION TO AUDIO-VISUAL MEDIA (Th A 25) Audio-radio: radio as a medium of mass communication,characteristics of radiohistorical perspective, with special reference to India; types of ownership,audience, commercial radio, educational radio,emerging trends, AM, FM, franchising, community radio. I Television: television as a medium of mass communication, characteristics,ownership ; organizational structure of Doordarshan, satellite television channels, cable television, educational television, commercial television, recent trends in television broadcasting. II Films: Films- nature, historical background, technical aspects of films production, film industry in India, status, issues, Problems, regional cinema, future prospects, language and grammar. V Writing for Radio: script writing for news, talk, discussion, play, feature, commercials, interviews etc., finer aspects of radio language ; impact of new technology on media language, feature, talks. Writing for television- news, feature, interviews, documentaries, short talks,
12 PAPER VIII: REPORTING AND EDITING- II (Th A 25) Advance exercises in editing, re-writing, page make- up and layout, rewriting the copy of mofussil correspondent, editing political and foreign copy. I Interpretative reporting, investigative reporting, writing special articles and columns. Book reviews, film reviews, TV program reviews, theatre and cultural program reviews. II Rural Reporting: agricultural practices, problems and policies, caste community relations, rural-urban relations. V Structure and functions of newsroom of daily, weekly newspaper and periodicals, different sections and their functions. Advance reporting exercises in features, interviews, proceedings of the meetings of panchayat, Municipal Corporation and legislative assembly. Writing news analysis, backgrounders and articles. I Field Reporting: assignments to be given by the concerned faculty. EDITING: Assignments to be given by the concerned faculty. Visit to news paper offices. PAPER IX: ADVERTISING (Th. 75+ IA 25) Advertising - definition, historical development, social and economic benefits of advertising; mass media and advertising; criticisms; types of advertising; consumer advertising corporate industrial retail national trade professional social.
13 I Product advertising target audience brand image positioning; advertising strategies; appeals, advertising spiral, markets and its segmentation, sales promotion. II Advertising agency structure and functions, creativity media selection newspapers, magazines, radio, television, outdoor, strategy, planning, media budget; campaign planning V Copy writing and advertising production techniques; print; radio; radio; television; films; outdoor; ideation; visualization; use of computers; practical assignments in advertising; copy-preparation. Research in advertising, planning, execution, copy research, market research; ethical aspects of advertising; law and advertising; advertising and pressure groups; emerging trends. PAPER X: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND PLANNING IN INDIA (Th IA 25) Economic development: concept and general perspective common characteristics of undevelopment; India as a developing economy and its international standing. Strategies of development: balanced vs. unbalance growth strategy; wage goods strategy; basic need strategy; Mahalanobis heavy import substitution strategy; exports led growth strategy.
14 I Capital accumulation as factor in economic growth; role of education in economic development. Population and economic development ( the two-way relationship) Aspects of human development: education, poverty and inequality of income distribution (With special reference to India); problems associated with these and approaches towards their solution; changes in the sect oral distribution of national income per capita income and labor force since independence. Assessment of the India growth experience with respect to these. II Agriculture : role of agriculture in India s economic development, factors influencing productivity in agriculture, institutional factors, technological factors, pattern of ownership ; prices and availability of finance. Industry: the rate and pattern of industrial growth, trends since 1950; Industrial policy with special emphasis of New Industrial policy, V Public sector in India and its role in the growth process; role of the small scale and cottage industries and government s policy with respect to these; problem of industrial sickness. External sector: role of foreign aid, capital and MNCs in India s growth process. Foreign trade: composition and direction. India s balance of payments problem; impact of liberalization, particularly since 1991 on India economy WTO and IMF conditionalities.
15 PAPER XI: PHOTO JOURNALISM (Th IA 25 ) What is photo journalism? Beginning, necessity and significance. Photography element principles visual language meaning photographer s jargon; composition of photography subject and light. I Photographic equipment camera- types formats- lens- their types and functions film types and functions accessories. II Shots focus shutter speed selection of subject different types of photographs action photo editing procedure pictures for newspaper and magazines developing photographers manual and computerized photography. V Photographing people ; portrait and still, wildlife ; environment; sports; landscape; industrial disasters; photography for advertising; conflicts war political and social photography. News values for pictures photo- essays photo features; qualities essential for photojournalism; picture magazine color photography; impact of technology. Practical field assignment and their evaluation. PAPER XII: SPECIAL ARTICLE WRITING AND CURRENT AWARENESS (Th IA 25) The students will have to write special articles on socio- economic, political problem including current awareness (specifically to national and regional issues and problems). Like other theory papers, this will also be evaluated by external examiner.
16 THIRD YEAR PAPER-XIII: BROADCAST JOURNALISM AND PRODUCTION (Th. 75+ IA 25) Unit- I: Radio Radio programming, aspect of sound recording type of microphones and their uses, using sound bytes, studio production of radio newsreel and current affair programs, studio interviews, studio discussions, news writing and editing for radio, field reporting, interview techniques, presentation, news capsuling and radio commentary. I: Television Shooting with TV camera camera mounting, color balance, basic shoots and camera movements; studio lighting, video-editing techniques cut, mix and dissolve, use of cutaway AB roll editing; digital effects and post production, shooting multi camera shooting shooting and editing schedule; TV programs planning studio programs cues and commands, formats of TV programs, TV news writing, marking copy in production language, writing for TV programs, TV reporting, interview techniques, piece to camera and voice over, TV anchoring: voice broadcast skills enuciation, flow of modulation, facing camera-eye contact UNIT III: Practicals- Student shall to do practical work related to Unit-I and Unit-II. PAPER- XIV : DESIGN AND GRAPHICS (Th A 25) Elements of design and graphics, visualization, convergence and divergenceconceptualization-functions and significance-fundamentals of creativity in artlogic-style-value-tools of art-illustration-graphics I Basic elements and principles of graphics, design lay-out and production, typeface families-kinds-principles of good typography, spacing-measurementpoint system. II Type composition - manual - mechanical - lino - Ludlow - photo - DTP, use of computer software, character generation-use of multi-media
17 V Printing methods-letter presses, cylinder, rotary, gravure-screen, offset, plate making, types of papers, magazines lay-out, pagination, designing and printing of cover pages, safety measures in printing press. Color printing-color combinations-color scanning-color separation - color correction - color positives - color negatives: preparation of bromides, air pulls. PAPER- XV: INDIAN GOVERNMENT, POLITICS AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS (Th.75 + IA 25) Government making, working of federalism, issued in government at state and central levels of state autonomy in India. Politics at the district level Panchayati Raj, election and governance. I Nature of the party system: Study of the major national parties and of some of the more important regional parties, and their social bases; effects of fragmentation of parties on the formation and working of government at the centre and the states. II The electoral system process stresses and strains; secularism and communication in India problems and trends, center- state relations, and reports on center- sate relations. V A course on Indian government and politics must address itself to the most fundamental problems of our society in an attempt to understand the reasons behind their existence and the seeming indifference, general study of government in states and their performance since independence.
18 Brief study of international relations- foreign policies of India, UK, USA, Russia; UN and its agencies and their function; regional organization such as ASEAN, SAARC, OIC, OAC, India s relations with China, Pakistan, South Asian countries, West Asian Countries, Africa, Europe and America. PAPER- XVI : DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION (Th 75 +IA 25) Concept of development; development indicators, approaches to development; dilemmas of development policy, development planning. I Development journalism - concept -relevance; development communication meaning -strategies in development communication-dominant paradigm its critique II Social culture and economic barriers to development communication approaches to development ; use of media and inter-personal communication ;channels for development ;case studies in India context. V Participatory model mechanistic and organic models of development for communication; diffusion of innovation, extension, dependency, Gandhian model. Creation of development message-language, context, social environment, areas of rural development, health, population,agriculture, Pachayati Raj; campaigns and their evaluation - case studies in India context. PAPER XVII: SPORTS JOURNALISM (Th IA 25) A brief history of sports journalism; a study of the sports pages of leading India dailies and well known sports magazines; sports news,sports features, curtain raisers, sports pictures, their kinds and editing; profile of sports stars; special supplements, covering important meets and international sports events; ethics of sports writing ; pictorial essays; special columns; round-up; weekly or fortnightly columns; human interest stories; importance of rules and laws, the
19 laws, the place and importance of umpiring ; organization of sports departments sports coverage on AIR and Doordarshan; planning design & layout. The qualities for sports writers; facilities; task of organizers, coach s compilation of statistics, reference materials: Indian and International sports awards. PAPER XVIII: JOURNALISM PRACTICAL & VIVA - VOCE (100 Marks) The students shall carry assignment in reporting, feature and editorial writing, sub - editing, proof reading and periodical work during the session. The students should also maintain a record file of the work done during the session and all this will be evaluated by external and internal examiners together. Class room attendance, behavior and team work are also included in it. Field and Institutional Visits: The students are requiring going on extensive field visits pertain to the practical assignment. Besides these 15 days Institutional visits Print Media / Electronic Media / Advertising / Public Relation establishment are expected from the students.the students are required to prepare detailed reports of such visits for the presentation at the time of viva - voice for evaluation. This will be of 20 marks (out of total 100 Marks).
