Cloud beyond the obvious, an approach for innovation Christian Verstraete Chief Technologist Cloud Strategy
Our World is Changing Living in the age of tectonic shifts, and welcome to the new style of IT Every years a tectonic comes along in our industry Mainframe Client/server The Internet Mobile, social, big data, cloud New style of IT Reinvention of delivery models, evolution to cloud Explosion of human information Epic scale and speed Disrupting the status quo, fundamentally changing how technology is consumed, delivered and paid for 2
Combination of technologies provide opportunities Cloud New products New Business Models New services Mobile Big Data New customer relationships Social New go-to market approaches 3
Paradigm Shift of Cloud Computing 4
Can those technologies help you innovate? Business Innovation New business models, processes and efficiencies LOB Management IT Innovation Transform IT from a supporting cost centre to a service provider to LOB IT Cloud, Mobile, Social and Technology Innovation Big Data are new technologies Exploiting technologies that enable to innovation provide new throughout capabilities the enterprise and its ecosystem All Product/ Services Innovation Combine the new technology, IT and business capabilities for unique service and product offerings Business Units Ecosystem Innovation Combine own strengths with the ones of the partner network to increase market responsiveness Functions 5
Example: Customer Sounding Board First ever open source engineering project of a big automotive OEM > participants were involved in the design of a new, groundbraking vehicle Technical interface were standard Web 2.0 technologies plus a special web-interface to enable exchange of design and spec information 6
Example: Ideation driven Product Design Combines crowdsourcing with collaboration to reinvent the product development process 7
Digital experience In the new Information age the richness and volume of user interactions is too great to manually exploit. You can t extract insights without Understanding Meaning We must understand all user interactions as a single view to deliver compelling experiences and constantly learn from visitor behavior 8
Beyond People interactions The Internet of Things

Example: Building Control Digitize Analyze Decide 12
Example: HP and Shell Voyager solution AL2 / AL3 Vibrosis truck RSN Command center Retrieved RSNs Deployment / Retrieval trucks Recording truck AL1 End to end solution Up to 1M wireless nodes HP sensing technology HP networking hardware Data aggregate level Field storage Command center Deployment / recovery Quality control 13
Information from the Internet of Things We have gone beyond the decimal system Today data scientist uses Yottabytes to describe how much government data the NSA or FBI have on people altogether. In the near future, Brontobyte will be the measurement to describe the type of sensor data that will be generated from the IoT (Internet of Things) 14 This is our digital universe today = 250 trillion of DVDs Brontobyte This will be our digital universe tomorrow Yottabyte Zettabyte 1.3 ZB of network traffic Exabyte 1 EB of data is created on the internet each day = 250 million DVDs worth of information. The proposed Square Kilometer Array telescope will generated an EB of data per day Terabyte 500TB of new data per day are ingested in Facebook databases Megabyte by Petabyte The CERN Large Hadron Collider generates 1PB per second 10 9 Gigabyte
Have I just teased your imagination? The opportunities are endless, we are only limited by our imagination New business models are emerging including information providers, information transformers, information consumers The technology is there, now it is up to us to turn it into services & business Information technology is entering everything we do, businesses better be aware of it. 15
