ESD TRAINING SCHEDULE: GETTING TO GRADUATION-2008 Graduation requirements by Partnership for Learning 1. Dear Counselors, Administrators and other interested parties, The Washington School Counselors Association is working with Bridges to set up trainings regionally. We have some sites in mind, but wanted to open it up to districts/buildings whom might be interested in hosting a training session. Trainings are 2 days long and you would receive 1 free ticket. Tickets are $199 for 2 days. Also, WSCA will give free clock hours to its members. If you are interested, please contact me at kdholt@adelphia.net. This is an excellent program. I attended the "Snapshots" workshop and was very impressed. Teachers, counselors, administrators and librarians attended and found it very worthwhile. It is a program, I believe, that addresses Student Learning Plans/portfolios and ways to motivate students towards achieving those plans meaningfully. NFIB ( ) awards scholarships to graduating seniors for up $1,000 up to $10,000. I have information you might want to help school counselors know about. 4 5. The Federation of Private Career Schools and Colleges offers three $1000 scholarships to their schools for every high school. Contact Gena for more information: Gena Wikstrom Executive Director Washington Federation of Private Career Schools & Colleges th Court NE Redmond, WA / Dear Colleagues, We know you are all faced with talking to your parents, students and community about the new statewide high school graduation requirements, which take effect with the class of That s why we want to make sure you have the latest information you need and to give you some tools to help you communicate. From late February until late March, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and Partnership for Learning will visit each of the state s nine Educational Service Districts and several statewide conferences to help train school/district teams in delivering information about the new requirements to parents. The goal: to substantially increase the number of parents of students graduating in 2008 and beyond who have accurate information about the graduation requirements, the supports that will be available to help their children meet the requirements and how they can help their children succeed. We hope you will bring a team and join us for this free Getting to Graduation: A Parent Workshop training. Formally invited are superintendents, principals, school board directors, school counselors and public information officers, but please bring your teacher leaders, PTA president and/or key community partner to the training. At the two-hour training you will:» Learn about the progress the state has made in implementing the Certificate of Academic Achievement, which is earned when a student passes the 10th-grade WASL. OSPI is diligently working on supports that will be in place for all students, as well as supports for special needs and ELL students.» Collect a PowerPoint presentation and materials to use as the blueprint for how to organize and deliver a parent workshop. Presenters will talk about the areas of most interest to parents and local information you will want to make certain to provide.» Find out how to easily get one of 50 small grants from Partnership for Learning to conduct a parent event on the graduation requirements. This grant can help cover some of the costs associated with the event, such as handouts, refreshments, interpreters and childcare. Clock hours will be offered to school and district staff that attend the training sessions and commit to delivering at least one parent workshop in their districts. As you may already know, OSPI and the Washington Association of Student Councils will launch the Student-2-Student campaign in March. We believe Getting to Graduation: A Parent Workshop is a great companion piece. As your students become more educated about the state s graduation requirements, your parents should too. We also believe the materials and training you will receive can be used to talk with staff and community members. Please don t miss out on this opportunity to learn and get your questions answered about the new statewide graduation requirements. Sign up soon, as space at your ESD is

5 limited.
