1 Course Syllabus Course Description Principles of efficient management and leadership concepts as applicable to the sport industry. Focuses on principles and techniques of management relating to programs, facilities, special events, and personnel. Includes key personnel issues in sport management situations; ethics, law, and governance in sport management; the role of the marketing process in sport administration; and economics, accounting, and budgeting. Course Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Analyze sport management as a career field and as an academic major. 2. Examine the future of the sport industry, including some of the questions that sport managers will be required to answer. 3. Classify the social, cultural, economic, and legal issues that influence the sport business industry. 4. Analyze the legal and ethical issues influencing sport management operations. 5. Explain the importance of sport sociology for sport managers. 6. Demonstrate the process of consumer decision making in sport. 7. Describe organizational behavior in the context of the sport industry. 8. Illustrate three basic roles that managers assume in sport organizations. 9. Discuss the challenges and directions in sport marketing. 10. Explain the breadth of sport-related careers that focus on communication, public relations, and related skills. 11. Illustrate the purpose of the organizations that govern intercollegiate athletics. 12. Analyze the unique facets of professional sport, including its governance and the labor-management relationship professional team sports depend on. 13. Demonstrate the role, scope, and impact of sport management and marketing agencies as they relate to the business of sport. 14. Compare and contrast the intersection between sport and tourism. Credits Upon completion of this course, the students will earn three (3) hours of college credit. Course Structure 1. Unit Learning Objectives: Each unit contains Unit Learning Objectives that specify the measurable skills and knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit. 2. Written Lectures: Each unit contains a Written Lecture, which discusses lesson material. 3. Reading Assignments: Each unit contains Reading Assignments from one or more chapters from the textbook. 4. Learning Activities (Non-Graded): These non-graded Learning Activities are provided to aid students in their course of study. BSM 4101, Sport Administration 1

2 5. Key Terms: Key Terms are intended to guide students in their course of study. Students should pay particular attention to Key Terms as they represent important concepts within the unit material and reading. 6. Discussion Boards: Discussion Boards are a part of all CSU term courses. Information and specifications regarding these assignments are provided in the Academic Policies listed in the Course Menu bar. 7. Unit Assessments: This course contains eight Unit Assessments, one to be completed at the end of each unit. Assessments are composed of written response questions. 8. Unit Assignments: Students are required to submit for grading Unit Assignments in Units I, II, IV, and VI. Specific information and instructions regarding these assignments are provided below. 9. Ask the Professor: This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content related questions. 10. Student Break Room: This communication forum allows for casual conversation with your classmates. Unit Assignments Unit I Exploration Assignment The purpose of this assignment is for you to investigate various sport-related careers and compile the information into a PowerPoint presentation. You will want to conduct research on different sport industry careers. Once you have researched the different career opportunities, narrow down your choices, and choose a single sport industry career you would like to pursue. Include the following information in your presentation: Nature of the work Tasks associated with the job Required skills Education and other qualifications Academic programs that are available or would help aid you in entering the career field Related occupations Salary Employment outlook Professional associations or websites related to the career Your slide presentation should be between eight-10 slides and does not need to be limited strictly to the information above. Be creative in your presentation. Keep in mind that as you work in the sport industry you may have to create presentations for organizations and present yourself as informed and professional. Your slide presentation should include a title slide and a citation slide and are not to be included in the total slide count. Some suggested career exploration websites to research are listed below. You may also choose websites that are not on this list. go to and click on careers Unit II Organizational Chart For this assignment you will need to research an organization in the sport industry, or construct your own, and create an organizational chart of structure for the organization (figure 4.1, page 73 and 4.3, page 79 in chapter 4 of the textbook are good visual examples). You will want to provide a brief overview of the organization, and include the following information: Organizational structure Dimensions of organizational structure Relationships among the dimensions of organizational structure Organizational design Your response should be at least 200 words in length and does not need to be limited strictly to the information above. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. 3 Unit IV Ethics Assignment Ethics in Agencies and Revenue Sources Consider the following scenario (taken from chapter 10, pp ). Then place yourself in the position of an executive with a sport franchise or agency facing challenging economic times. Reflect and respond on the ethical issues involved with reversing previous bans on advertising. Your response should be at least 200 words in length. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. The Scenario In 2009 NBA team owners reversed a long-time ban on courtside advertising by spirits brands in an effort to increase revenue during the current economic downturn. Before this decision, alcoholic spirits signage was limited to premium clubs and related signage that was not on camera during telecasts. The NBA decision followed that of MLB, the National Hockey League (NHL), and NASCAR in allowing spirits advertising within camera view. This ownership vote opens new revenue sources for all NBA teams who have observed the ban on such advertising since According to Chris Granger, senior vice president of team marketing and business operations for the NBA, We are always trying to find ways to drive more revenue and this falls in line with that. Granger added, We are working too on what other opportunities will exist (Lombardo & Lefton, 2009, 5). Over the past decade, various ad restrictions at sport properties regarding formerly off-limit categories have been loosened. For example, casino resorts are a fixture at many big sport venues and on sports telecasts, as are state lotteries. Gary Stevenson, a principal of WMG stated, I don t have an issue with this because I don t see a lot of difference between hard liquor and beer when it comes to advertising (Lombardo & Lefton, 2009, 12). Given the state of the global economy, what comes next? Will tobacco be given consideration under a set of narrow and restrictive guidelines for messaging? One thing that remains clear is that as some categories and businesses cut back on their sport spending, those revenues need to be replaced. The list of potential replacements is not a long one at this point. Stay tuned. Unit VI Web Search For Unit VI there are two assignment options you may choose from: Web Search 1 Economic Impact Studies: Using your favorite Internet search engine site, find the results of at least one economic impact study conducted for a sport event or facility. Then write at least a 400 word response, making sure to answer the following questions. Who conducted the study? How was the study conducted? What were the key findings and conclusions of the study? What alternative conclusions exist? Web Search 2 Sources of Revenues and Expenses for Sport Organizations: Pick three sport organizations. Use your favorite Internet search engine to identify as many sources of expenses and revenues as possible for each organization. Then write at least a 400 word response comparing and contrasting the revenues and expenses for the three organizations. Whether you choose Web Search 1 or Web Search 2, your response should be at least 400 words in length. You are required to use at least your textbook as source material for your response. You may also use outside sources. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations. APA Guidelines CSU requires that students use the APA style for papers and projects. Therefore, the APA rules for formatting, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and listing of sources are to be followed. A document titled APA Guidelines Summary is available for you to download from the APA Guide Link, found in the Learning Resources area of the mycsu Student Portal. It may also be accessed from the Student Resources link on the Course Menu. 4 CSU Grading Rubric for Papers/Projects The course papers will be graded based on the CSU Grading Rubric for all types of papers. In addition, all papers will be submitted for electronic evaluation to rule out plagiarism. Course projects will contain project specific grading criteria defined in the project directions.
