1 BBA 4326, Procurement and Contract Management Course Syllabus Course Description Investigates contracts as a means for individuals and businesses to sell and otherwise transfer property, services, and other rights. Examines the actions winning companies are utilizing to build successful partnerships, manage expectations, and build trust between organizations. Also investigates the contract management process, roles and responsibilities of team members, contracts and legal issues, e-procurement, and contracting methods. Course Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Summarize the actions needed to build successful partnerships in the e-business age. 2. Analyze the critical importance of each level of the Successful Partnership Pyramid. 3. Describe the steps in the contract management process. 4. Explain the importance of teamwork in the contract management process. 5. Compare and contrast contract law in the United States to the different contracting concepts and principles used globally. 6. Discuss e-procurement and other contracting methods. 7. Summarize the three phases of the contract management process: pre-award, award, and post-award. 8. Compare and contrast the general contract pricing arrangement options for meeting business objectives. 9. Explain common misconceptions regarding global contract management. 10. Describe the significance of the project management discipline to provide solutions that meet or exceed customer expectations for value and results. 11. Discuss the unique tools which organizations are using to improve their buying and/or selling performance: Contract Management Maturity Model and the Contract Management Risk and Opportunity Assessment Tool. 12. Justify the need for an enterprise contract management process. Credits Upon completion of this course, the students will earn three (3) hours of college credit. Course Structure 1. Unit Learning Objectives: Each unit contains Unit Learning Objectives that specify the measurable skills and knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit. 2. Written Lectures: Each unit contains a Written Lecture, which discusses lesson material. BBA 4326, Procurement and Contract Management 1

2 3. Reading Assignments: Each unit contains Reading Assignments from one or more chapters from the textbook. Supplemental Readings are provided in Units VII and VIII to aid students in their course of study. 4. Key Terms: Key Terms are intended to guide students in their course of study. Students should pay particular attention to Key Terms as they represent important concepts within the unit material and reading. 5. Unit Assessments: Unit Assessments contain both objective and subjective type questions. Students are required to take Unit Assessments at the completion of Units I-VI. 6. Unit Assignments: Students are required to submit for grading Unit Assignments in Units II, IV, and VII. Specific information and instructions regarding these assignments are provided below. 7. Research Paper: Students are required to submit for grading a Research Paper in Unit VIII. Specific information and instructions regarding this assignment are provided below. 8. Final Exam: Students are to complete a Final Exam at the end of Unit VIII. All Final Exams are proctored. You are permitted four (4) hours to complete this exam, in the presence of your approved proctor. This is an open book exam. Only course textbooks and a calculator, if necessary, are allowed when taking proctored exams. 9. Ask the Professor: This communication forum provides you with an opportunity to ask your professor general or course content related questions. 10. Student Break Room: This communication forum allows for casual conversation with your classmates. Unit Assignments Unit II Research Paper Topic For this course, you will prepare a Research Paper (due in Unit VIII). To help you begin this project stay on track, this assignment asks you to prepare a one-page paper that lists your topic and includes your initial thoughts about the topic. Consider addressing the following points: What do you currently know about the topic? What do you hope to learn about the topic? Why did you choose this topic? Select one of the following topics on successful partnerships, people, tools, and/or best practices dealing with contract and procurement management: The author of your textbook devoted an entire chapter of his book to teamwork, stating that the professionals who fill the key roles in successful companies are most effective when the roles are clearly delineated and the company recognized the importance of effective interaction between employees He further stated that the contract management process and the Best Practices contained in the textbook will contribute to more effective business management only with commitment by everyone because teamwork is the essential element of success. Franklin Covey is now offering The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Managers seminars, based on the very successful The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People seminars. Research this management training program, and analyze how it might benefit professionals in the business of contract and project management. In a parody of Covey's work, motivational speaker Barry Maher has authored The Seven Habits of Highly Defective Managers. Compare and contrast Covey's 7 Habits to Maher's 7 Habits and to the seven best practices developed by NCR Corporation, referred to in Chapter 4 of your textbook. Is there a common thread in the messages you take away from these three resources? Referring to the Successful Partnership Pyramid in Chapter 2 of your textbook, research Redbox Movie Rental kiosks, analyzing how they successfully partner with existing businesses. Explore the following topics, as they relate to Redbox: uniqueness, creativity, use of the Internet, the role of contracts, procurement, outsourcing, risk, getting results, evidence of Best Practices, and any other course-related issue. What are the strengths and weaknesses of Redbox? (With prior approval from your instructor, you may research a successful business partnership of your choice, other than Redbox.) A topic of your choice that relates to this course and is pre-approved by your instructor. The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to begin thinking about the Research Paper by solidifying a topic and identifying answers to questions that you would like to discover through research. 3 Unit IV Research Paper Outline The Research Paper in this course asks you to select a topic or scenario, research it, and report the details. By now, you have had the opportunity to review the topics, select one, and briefly reflect on the topic. To stay on track and to continue to make progress on the Research Paper, prepare an outline with the major headings or topic sentences. An outline is a great way to provide organization for papers and projects. Your outline should include the following: The topic of your Research Paper. One paragraph that describes the importance of the topic. At least four major headings in outline form. You do NOT have to commit to the details of your outline until the Research Paper is finished. As you continue to research the topic and draft the paper, the organization of your thoughts (i.e., the details of the outline) may evolve. That is expected and acceptable. To organize those thoughts initially, however, it is a good idea to begin with an outline. Use your own words, and follow APA style. Unit VII Article Critique The Article Critique assignment for this class involves reading, critiquing, and submitting the article provided below. You may complete the article critique any time prior to Unit VII. Do not your paper directly to your professor. Here is a link to the article: Vonsosen, R. (2005, July). From research to revenue: Optimizing ip profits with enterprise contract management. CM Magazine, The article critique is due before the end of Unit VII. Include each of the following parts within your article critique: Part One. Part one is the identification of the article. What is important here is that you provide the reader with enough information about your article so that they will be able to locate the article. Part Two. Part two is a summary. List the main points that the author has tried to establish, i.e. 1, 2, 3 or first, second, third. Part Three. Part three is your critique. You are to provide your reaction (insightful, critical, and logical) to the points that the author tried to make, or an overall critique of the entire article. A simple statement of agreement or disagreement is not enough. While you may make such a statement by way of introduction to your reaction, you must clearly and logically state the reasons for the post that you have taken. Length: There is no absolute minimum or maximum to the length of the article you read or the length of the paper you prepare. Format your Article Critique using APA Style. Use your own words, and include citations and references as needed to avoid plagiarism. Research Paper Prepare a well-organized and researched five- to seven-page paper on the topic you chose in Unit II. Your paper must contain at least five Internet sources, in addition to professional journal articles or resources related to the profession. The research paper is due at the completion of Unit VIII. You are required to use APA style for this assignment (double-spaced with 1-inch margins). The project must be submitted in 12pt Times New Roman font, with proper APA heading guidelines followed. 4 APA Guidelines CSU requires that students use the APA style for papers and projects. Therefore, the APA rules for formatting, quoting, paraphrasing, citing, and listing of sources are to be followed. A document titled APA Guidelines Summary is available for you to download from the APA Guide Link, found in the Learning Resources area of the mycsu Student Portal. It may also be accessed from the Student Resources link on the Course Menu. This document provides links to several internet sites that provide comprehensive information on APA formatting, including examples and sample papers. CSU Grading Rubric for Papers/Projects The course papers will be graded based on the CSU Grading Rubric for all types of papers. In addition, all papers will be submitted for electronic evaluation to rule out plagiarism. Course projects will contain project specific grading criteria defined in the project directions. To view the rubric, click the Academic Policies link on the Course Menu, or by accessing the CSU Grading Rubric link, found in the Learning Resources area of the mycsu Student Portal. Final Exam Final examinations are to be administered to students by an approved proctor on a date that is mutually convenient. The student is responsible for selecting a qualified proctor that must be approved by the University. A list of acceptable proctors is provided in the Examination Proctor Policy. To review the complete Examination Proctor Policy including a list of acceptable proctors, proctor responsibilities, proctor approval procedures and the Proctor Agreement Form, go to the MyCSU Student Portal from the link below. Proctored Final Exams are taken online. To request your proctored final exam, select the designated links found in the online course. You are permitted four (4) hours to complete this exam, in the presence of your approved proctor. This is an open book exam.
