Three minutes about the City Line the commuter train tunnel that will make life easier and greener English

1. GOOD FOR YOU Saving you time Delays and overcrowding on rail services are caused by the fact that Stockholm simply doesn t have enough railway tracks. So we re now constructing more tracks and making room for more trains. The City Line is the new railway for you and for Stockholm a six-kilometre commuter train tunnel from Tomteboda to Stockholm South Station, and new commuter stations at Odenplan and T-Centralen. More trains and simpler connections will make it easier for you to arrive on time. Less stressing, more relaxing. We ve already started work and will be finished in 2017.

2. GOOD FOR STOCKHOLM An underground wonder The City Line will make Stockholm even better. One in five Swedes lives in the region and more are moving here. Our communic a tions therefore need to work and be environmentally friendly too. Once the commuter services have their own tracks beneath Stockholm, they can run more often and be more punctual and be a fast and reliable alternative to the car. Eight out of ten rail journeys either begin or end in Stockholm. Once the City Line is finished, twice as many trains will be able to use the existing railway tracks through the city, thus improving rail connections with the Mälardalen region and the rest of Sweden.

3. GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT The green tunnel The City Line will make it easier to use public transport and leave the car at home. It will also improve the environment. Concern for people and the environment, strict requirements and careful measurements are crucial aspects of our construction work. We are using synthetic diesel in work vehicles and re-using all the rock material from blasting and excavation. The environment in the new stations will be quiet and clean, with effective ventilation and glass partitions separating the platforms from the tracks. Sound-dampening rubber mats underneath the rails and noise protection will also contribute towards creating a pleasant environment. The result of all our hard work will be less exhaust fumes above ground and fast commuter trains below ground.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS GOOD FOR YOU What is the City Line? Commuter trains will have their own tracks in a six-kilometre tunnel beneath Stockholm from Tomteboda via Odenplan, T-Centralen then on beneath Riddarholmen and all the way to Stockholm South Station. Along the two tracks, we are building the new commuter stations Stockholm Odenplan and Stockholm City. Between Årsta and Älvsjö Station we are building a new railway bridge and re-laying the tracks. GOOD FOR YOU Why is the City Line needed? The two railway tracks at the southern approach to Stockholm are unable to handle current and future rail traffic. Once the City Line is finished in 2017, track capacity in Stockholm will have doubled and communications within the region and with the rest of Sweden will be improved. GOOD FOR YOU How will the City Line affect your everyday life? The City Line will make it easier for you to arrive on time. More tracks will mean that trains can run more often, be more punctual and run faster. Connections will be quick and easy thanks to the close proximity of the new stations to underground and bus services. GOOD FOR STOCKHOLM How will the City Line be noticeable in Stockholm? The City Line will be mostly underground and will only be visible by its station entrances. The cityscape, cultural environment and traffic will not be disrupted to any significant extent.
GOOD FOR STOCKHOLM What are the benefits for Stockholm? Good public transport is vital for a city the size of Stockholm. One in five Swedes lives in the region and more are moving here. The City Line will provide smooth, easy, environment-friendly travel and is part and parcel of the development of an attractive, sustainable region. GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT How will the City Line affect the environment? The City Line will enable more people to choose public transport. This means lower carbon dioxide emissions and a better environment in Stockholm. GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT How are we protecting the environment during the construction period? The City Line will be seen, heard and discussed. We are taking people and the environment into consideration during the construction period. For example, we continuously measure noise and vibrations, and adapt our work accordingly. We use synthetic diesel in our work vehicles and the blast rubble is being re-used. GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT What will the new stations be like? Safety and comfort are the guiding principles for the new stations. The indoor environments will be bright, quiet and safe with well thought-out architecture, good ventilation and glass partitions separating the platforms from the tracks.
Tomteboda Karolinska institutet Stockholm Odenplan Vasaparken Vasastan The station at Odenplan will replace Karlberg Station and will be used for both commuter and underground services. Escalators will link the two parts of the station underground. We will build a new entrance by Matteus Church. Building the City Line will take a long time. Many people are and will be affected, and this is something that we are taking into careful consideration as we carry out the building work. However, to shorten the construction period, we are working in several places at the same time. First we are drilling and blasting the tunnel in the rock beneath Stockholm, and lowering a concrete tunnel into the water at Söderström. We will then lay the tracks, draw cables and equip the stations. Norrmalm Vanadisvägen Vanadisvägen Odengatan Dalagatan Karlberg Sveavägen Upplandsgatan Torsgatan Vasagatan Stockholm central Kungsholmen
Götgatan Stockholm City Station The City Line s new City station will replace Stockholm Central for commuter services, and will be located directly beneath T-Centralen. The station will have four tracks and two underground halls with escalators providing a direct link to all the underground lines. Stockholm South Station Once the City Line is connected to the existing tracks at Stockholm South Station, all commuter trains will depart from the same platform. Söder mälarstrand Riddarfjärden Årstaviken Södermalm Hornsgatan Ringvägen
LEGEND Existing tracks City Line New railway bridge at Årsta Station ÅRSTA We are constructing a service and rescue tunnel alongside the main tunnel of the City Line. When the City Line is finished in 2017, all commuter services will use the new railway bridge over Årstaviken. Other services will continue to use the old bridge.
Facts and figures: The City Line 1871 two new tracks through Stockholm were constructed. Back then, there were 10 trains a day there are 550 trains a day, still running on two tracks. 60 per cent of all trains through Stockholm are commuter trains. 250,000 commuter train journeys are made by the people of Stockholm every day. 30 buses (or 1,000 cars) would be needed to transport as many passengers as one commuter train the City Line will be finished. 6 kilometre-long tunnel for commuter rail traffic. 5 minutes will be the travel time between Stockholm Odenplan and Stockholm South stations. 1.8 kilometres of escalators are being built. 16,8 billion Swedish kronor is the cost of building the City Line. The investment is being financed by the State, the City of Stockholm, Stockholm County Council and the regions of Mälardalen and Östgöta (Jan 2007 price level). 2,500 people will work on the construction project. 6 work tunnels will be used during construction. 30 skyscrapers. The volume of excavated material, mostly rock, being re-used. 150 metres we are inspecting all properties up to this distance from the tunnel. 380 measurement points along the route permit regular monitoring of the groundwater level. 1,400 metres. The length of the railway bridge being built over the track area in Årsta. The bridge will begin north of Årstaberg station and end just south of Älvsjö goods station.
Closer in the future When travelling by train in Stockholm becomes easier, everything will feel closer. That s the idea behind the City Line, the new commuter train tunnel that is wending its way beneath Stockholm. Communicate with us in the City Line Project Everyone who lives, works or uses public transport in Stockholm will receive ongoing and up-to-date information about how they may be affected by the City Line during its construction.
