We think the subject of leak detection is both important and timely and thank the MTS Ocean Pollution Committee for hosting this Symposium. Through the efforts of our program committee led by Ron Cramer, Ryan Morton, Daniel Esser, Chuck Richards, and Simon Reeves we are presenting to you a unique program that focuses on innovative strategies in the field of early leak detection. 3 2013 MTS Subsea Leak Detection Symposium Program Committee Ron Cramer, Symposium Chair Ron Cramer is a Principle Optimization Engineer with Shell Projects and Technology, Houston. Mr. Cramer has over 30 years experience in multiple Shell E&P operating companies covering Oil/Gas Field Operations, Hydrocarbon Accounting, Maintenance/Materials Management, Instrumentation, Telemetry, SCADA/DCS, ESD/F&G and Information. Ryan Morton, Symposium Vice-Chair Ryan Morton serves as an environment health & safety engineer on a tremendous gas project in Mozambique. His career centers on supporting confidence and integrity around organizations decisions on environmental health and safety risks. Over the past three years he has co-chaired the MTS ocean pollution committee and worked with an exciting group of MTS professionals specifically on subsea leak detection technology. Daniel Esser, Symposium Technical Chair Daniel Esser is the Managing Director and co-founder of CONTROS Systems & Solutions GmbH since 2006, a company that provides state of the art multiparameter sensor systems and service for both, hydrocarbon and CCS leak detection and environmental tasks and projects worldwide. Daniel graduated from the University of North London with a Master s Degree in International Business and Economics. Currently he also serves as a lecturer for underwater environmental monitoring and pollution at the Technical University of Hamburg. Chuck Richards, MTS Advisor Chuck Richards is President of CA Richards & Associates, Inc. an award winning Houston based company serving the Marine, Offshore, and Subsea Industries. Over the course of his 39-year career, Chuck has helped launch several new technologies into the underwater marketplace. He currently serves as the chairman of the MTS ROV Committee. Simon Reeves, MTS Advisor Simon Reeves is the Vice President, North America, of Sonardyne Inc. based in Houston, Texas. Mr. Reeves is an integral part of Sonardyne s global commercial team developing new business opportunities, supporting clients and providing world-class service facilities.

7 Speaker Bios Julio R. Alonso Mr. Alonso has 40 plus years working in industrial automation area, for Hiter, Bristol, Foxboro, Crosby, Aselco, Fisher-Rosemount and Asel-Tech, mostly in the sales, marketing, production, research and development areas. Mr. Alonso holds degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Marketing, by FGV. Mr. Alonso has experience in international relationships, developing several agreements with companies from South America, USA, Canada, Europe and Middle East. Luigi Barbagelata In 1995, Mr. Barbagelata received a MS in Mechanical Engineering with specialization in vibration and acoustics. He is currently the General Manger of Co.l.mar. Srl. Since 1997, Mr. Barbagelata has had full responsibility of most of the company s activities including: geophysical surveys, underwater pipeline leak detection surveys, acoustic measurement campaign, and acoustic system design and realization. Dr. Ing. Hendrik Brandt Dr. Brandt graduated as Naval Architect in 2002 at the University of Duisburg-Essen. In 2006 he received the Dr.-Ing. for his studies on Fuel Cell Systems from the same University. From 2005 to 2007 he was employed as Business Developer for the Korean Company LG. Since then he is working for ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in the research and development department. With his Team of Engineers he is developing product concepts for the maritime industry. Arid Brevik Arild Brevik has worked the last 3 years in the Kongsberg Maritime Subsea division. He is responsible for business development within underwater monitoring with a special focus on environmental monitoring for oil and gas. Mr. Brevik graduated from the Norwegian Naval Academy as a naval officer on reserve and in 1991 he graduated with a Master of Science, Electronics from the Norwegian Technical University, Trondheim. Since the mid 90 s, Arild Brevik has been working in the electronics industry. Dr. Graham Brown Dr. Brown is the Divisional Director, Oil and Gas, for Sonardyne International. He has been responsible for the management of the research and development programme that has delivered Sonardyne's detection, tracking and imaging sonar developments over the last 5 years. Dr. Brown has a 20 year history of investigating electromechanical engineering problems with emphasis on designing and developing instrumentation systems and developed a particular interest in subsea leak detection. Marco Coronado Marco Coronado is a Flow Assurance Analyst in the Production Performance Services group at FMC Technologies, where he performs FlowManager studies and flow assurance analyses to support engineering design and operations. He has been involved in flow assurance related activities for the past 7 ½ years. Marco has a bachelor of science in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University.
8 Olu Esan Olugbenga (Olu) Esan is a Subsea Survey Engineer in the Subsea Unit of Chevron Energy Technology Company. In the last 12 months, Olu has been working on the development of leak detection technologies for mobile and static platforms. He has 10 years experience in the offshore industry. Olu holds a Master of Science degree in Geomatics Engineering from the University of Calgary, Canada. Torleiv Stien Grimsrud Torleiv Stien Grimsrud is working in the section for Environmental Risk Assessment and Technology in DNV and manages projects within offshore leak detection. He has previously focused on the economic and environmental implications of petroleum activities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Torleiv holds an MSc from UV University Amsterdam (NL) and an MA (Hons) from the University of St. Andrews. Dag Almar Hansen Dag Almar Hansen is the CEO of the Norwegian award winning innovators TECHNI. He is the driving force behind environmental conscious technology innovations such as all electric HIPPS, control & drive systems, deepwater pumping systems, drilling and downhole safety components. He has a triple Bachelor of Science within Mechanical design, Mechatronics and Thermodynamics and has been in the industry since he started working on exploration platforms in the arctic and the NCS in the mid 80's. Dr. Naomi Kato Dr. Kato completed his doctoral course in Naval Architecture at the University of Tokyo and received a Doctor of Engineering degree in He has been a Professor at the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, School of Engineering, Osaka University since 2003 after being a Professor at the School of Marine Science and Technology, Tokai University. He has been engaged in research and educational activities on biomechanics and underwater robotics. Dr. Peter Linke Dr. Peter Linke is a marine biologist and started his scientific work in 1985 on bentho- pelagic coupling at Kiel University. There he got his Ph.D in 1989 and joined GEOMAR in 1993 as a senior scientist to investigate the biogeochemical processes that are associated with fluid flow phenomena at various subduction zone and hydrothermal vent settings. This includes process-oriented investigations by combing geological, geochemical and biological approaches and by using modern in-situ techniques, in particular Lander and ROV technologies. Dr. Mark Lowell Dr. Lowell is a consultant and sales representative, Fiber Optic Sensing Cable Solutions, for Brugg Cables, LLC. Mark s experience spans more than 25 years in wire and cable where he held numerous and diverse R&D, marketing, and general management positions including Research Scientist, VP Engineering, VP Marketing, General Manager, Business Unit Manager, Director R&D, and VP Innovation. Mark obtained a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University.
9 Carlos Matos Carlos Matos is a wireless specialist with Rosemount for the states of Texas and Oklahoma where he provides technical support for Wireless Hart instrumentations. He graduated in 1993 with a four year degree as Technologist in Industrial Electronics from ITESA, in the Dominican Republic. He has more than 15 years of wireless experience, including 9 years design experience of wireless products with Motorola in several teams involved in the design of mobile phones using the iden technology. Dr. Chris Minto Dr. Minto has been with OptaSense since the very beginning in 2008, taking care of the twin responsibilities of product development and all operational aspects of the company in their downstream applications. He is responsible for the initial early adoption of Distributed Acoustic Sensing in the midstream Oil and Gas business, helping a wide range of clients implement Leak prevention strategies with the aim of Zero Pipeline incidents. Dr. Michael Mondanos Dr. Mondanos joined Silixa as a Business Development Manager for industrial monitoring applications. He has over 15 years field experience as a senior engineer and project manager in upstream and downstream optical fibre installations. Dr. Mondanos holds a Masters in Communications & Radio Engineering from King s College, University of London, and a Diploma in Optical Fibre Sensors and a PhD in Distributed Optical Fibre Sensing Systems from Imperial College, University of London. Thomas Ruth Thomas Ruth is senior researcher visualization at the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research IGD, Competence Center Maritime Graphics in Rostock/Germany since He obtained a diploma in computer science with the major subject in computer graphics. Part of his current research are visual analytics in marine technology and ocean research and visualization of marine data (e.g. undersea terrain rendering) with Virtual Reality and state-of-the-art web technologies. Dr. R. Timothy Short Dr. Short received his B.Sc. degree in Physics from Florida State University in 1979, and Ph.D. in Experimental Atomic Collision Physics from the University of Tennessee in In 2007 he joined a newly formed Marine Technology Program within SRI International as the Chemical Sensors Group manager in St. Petersburg, FL. In late 2012 he became the lead of a newly formed Marine and Space Sensing Group, which is part of the Space and Marine Technology Program at SRI. Edward Tapanes Mr. Tapanes Graduated from Canada s Royal Military College (BSc 1988, Math and Physics) and the University of Toronto (MASc 1991, Aerospace Science & Engineering). Mr. Tapanes pioneered the development of long-haul, distributed fiber optic sensor technology that could locate, for which he received several patents. Over the past 24 years, Mr. Tapanes has been providing security solutions, using distributed fiber optic sensing technologies, to various industrial, Military and Government agencies around the globe.
10 Giulio Telleschi Mr. Telleschi holds a MS in Robotics & Automation Engineering and BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pisa. In 2011 he was a Visiting Researcher at the University of Hawai'I, working on control theory and mathematical modeling. Since 2012 he has worked at Co.l.mar. Srl in the R&D division, focusing on the development of subsea acoustic leak monitoring techniques and technology. Sören Themann Sören Themann is the Managing Director and cofounder of Embient GmbH - a company that provides consulting services and state of the art equipment for both scientific and commercial CO2 and hydrocarbon leak detection projects worldwide. He graduated from Kiel University with a Diploma in Marine Geology and Geophysics in Since then he has been working as a project manager, scientific consultant and as a sales manager for companies in the scientific and industrial environment. Eric Tervo Mr. Tervo is an Engineer in the Fluid Dynamics Group at Southwest Research Institute. He contributes to research and testing through experimental design and execution. He has been involved in multiple projects to support the oil and gas industry, including several studies of leak detection methods for onshore and offshore liquid and gas pipelines.
