log NOON Norwegian Ocean Observatory Network by Juergen Mienert Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 1
log TO GET WHERE WE NEED TO GO Observatories as Pioneers for Environmental Knowledge Centres Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 2
Where do we need to go? Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 3
History Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) with a ten year implementation plan (signed by 75 GEO UN members) EU 6 framework programme project European Seafloor Observatory Network of Excellence (ESONET) EU 7 framework programme contributes building infrastructures for Earth Observation Systems EU 7 framework projects European Multidisciplinary Seafloor Observatory (EMSO) and Svalbard Integrated Earth Observing Systems (SIOS) - from national to regional and global observatory networks Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 4
History NOON was established as a «loose» structure in 2007 by a group of scientists from Universities, research centres and representatives from industry NOON consortium consists of nine partners from University and research institutions ( UiT, UiB, UiO, NGI, Uni Research, CMR, IMR, SINTEF, NP) and partners from industry (Statoil, Aanderaa data instrumnets, Kongsberg Maritime) USA (Ocean Observatory Initiative), CANADA (NEPTUNE) increase cooperation, give advice and exchange knoewledge with EUROPE (ESONET/EMSO) and NORWAY (NOON) Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 5
History The NOON team submitted a proposal in 2010 to the Norwegian Research Council entitled «Cabled Observatories for Monitoring of the Ocean System (COSMOS) to establish the necessary technology infrastructure NOON welcomes new partners from industry and reseach institutions and is open for all good forces who wish to join and to contribute! Upcoming FP 8 programme and marine infrastructure Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 6
Aims Establish the high-technology marine infrastrycture for Understanding ocean processes and their physical, chemical and biological coupling assessements of the ocean environment including real-time short and long-term changes Offshore industry baseline studies, condition monitoring and event prevention monitoring Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 7
Projects and cooperation EMSO Multidisciplinary Seafloor Observation ESONET European Seafloor Observatory Network SIOS Svalbard Integrated Observatory Systems KONGSHAU Kongsfjorden-Hausgarten ARCTOS Sensors: Detection and monitoring of methane related to oil and gas production in the Arctic COSMOS... Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 8
Norwegian test sites for current environmental knowledge Fjords ( Masfjorden, Hardanger Fjord) Coastal and shelf areas (Lofoten, Vesterålen) Shelf and deep ocean areas (Barents Sea, Svalbard) Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 9
Natural Changes From R. Curry, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 10
Ocean acoustic/physical/chemical/biological From SIOS Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 11
Current snap shot approach Physical point sampling of sediments and faunal assemblage Point water column studies of physical and chemical parameters Point acoustic studies of faunal activities in the water column Visual diver (shallow) and camera (deep) surveys Industry and university/research centre projects Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 12
Disadvantages Lack of strategy/cooperation weakens underwater technology developments for environmental assessments before during and after natural or human made impacts. Lack of long-term data to improve forward prediction using models Fra 2009 er det foretatt kontinuelige elektronsike målinger av temperattur og saltholdighet i sjøen i 1, 19, 75 m dyp, samt lufttemperatur og vindretning og vindstyrke Lack of long- and realtime observation cause missing events Present approach fails to detect immediate environmental response Costs are too high to provide ships for environmental assessments Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 13
Snap shot Opportunities Long term Align industry, technology and research development with the current strategy for multidisciplinary ocean observatories (cabled and non-cabled, Argo and glider systems) Increase the connectivity of current environmental monitoring activities Develop flexible sensor platforms for long-term and real-time measurements Increase international collaboration in science and technology Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 14
Frontiers area monitoring Ice-covered and seasonal storm areas (Barents Sea and Arctic) Areas of intense fishing and petroleum activity Sensitive areas of climate change in northward flowing warm currents Conditions and early warning in natural and human influenced systems Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 15
Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 16
Technology for integrated environmental knowledge centres on the seabed? Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 17
Underwater technology development with a focus on: Sensor and multi-sensor technology for new tasks Maintenance improvement of existing and new sensors Sensor standardisation for sensor networks Power requirements and related cable systems Cable communication technology and sensor plug systems Sensor and glider fleet programming Data information access and short and long-term analysis Interface flexibility to develop and test new technology Virtual networks with information and analysis collaboration Early warning information and decision flow Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 18
What do we want to achieve? Environmental monitoring (acoustical, electromagnetical, physical, chemical, biological) Access to real-time, inter-calibrated data with a maintained data management infrastructure Work in areas with established infrastructure Work in localities without established infrastruture Mobility in regions of academic and/or industry interest Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 19
Geohazard warning Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 20
Climate and Environmental change detection Highest concentration of anthropogenic CO 2 in the ocean where deep-water forms (Sabine et al., Science, 2004, Vol. 305, DOI: /science Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 21
Carbon reduction Statoil Offshore CO 2 geological storage above/under the reservoir Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 22
Data management Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 23
SUMMARY Environmental knowledge about changing conditions based on real-time data is basically not available Environmental assessment of natural or man made changes is therefore lacking a solid data base Reliable science and/or management advice for regional developments is poor because of a lack in comprehensive data information Analytical tool development is needed for better learning to analyse new combinations of real-time multi sensor and platform data (? multivariate/statictical analysis) Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 24
The future of the 21st century ocean Marine Sciences and European Research Infrastructures An international symposium, Brest-France, Centre de Congrès Le Quartz 28 June 1 July 2011 Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 25
Thank you for your attention! Alliance of marine science : from national to global network 26
