3 Sowing the Seed: Speaker Bios Ms Fiona Crowther, Senior Software Engineer, IBM Systems & Technology Lab Manchester Rescue Coordination, Daylight Savings Time and Dinosaurs : The variety and opportunities of working in IT Fiona graduated in Mathematical Physics from the University of Nottingham in 1991 followed by an MSc in Information Systems at the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen a year later. She worked in Image Processing for a few years as both a developer and a support engineer, before moving to IBM in She has worked on various projects at four different IBM sites (one of those in the US), on projects varying from rescue coordination to automated decision making, and on various operating systems. She has worked in design, development, test, support and performance roles, and has also had the chance to write several papers to give talks. Outside work Fiona is a keen violinist and also enjoys hiking and running. MMU Sowing the Seed: Careers in Computational Intelligence 3

4 Ms Karen Pudner, BBC Developing confidence: Techniques to help you trust your code and your abilities My first experience of programming was O Level Computer Studies back in the dark ages of 1985, (programming in BASIC). After a gap of over 15 years, I returned to programming, doing a couple of short evening classes in Java. In 2004 I took the plunge and enrolled for a part time MSc in Computing at MMU. Since then, I have worked for Motive Technology and LateRooms, programming mainly in C#. In November 2013 I started at the BBC, and I'm now primarily programming in JavaScript. I'm very open minded regarding languages and technologies, and I'm a big advocate of Agile Methodologies and Test Driven Development. MMU Sowing the Seed: Careers in Computational Intelligence 4

5 Mr David Gillaspy Business Intelligence Consultant, Bluefin Solutions, London Why Business Intelligence?: A Northern guy doing BI I have had a career in Business Intelligence & Warehousing (BIW) for over 4 years. I have experienced in most phases of the software implementation lifecycle in the roles of developer, team Lead, testing and training. I have a passion for new technology and how this can be applied to helping business achieve their goals, being agile with insights into how they and their customers interact and perform. I have a particular interest in the area of visualizing the data to the client and how this can be used to engage the audience, opening up the data warehouse to a wider user base with more probing questions. 6 Ms Sue Devlin MBCS, IIBA Member, MIOEE BYOE - Bring Your Own Employability Sue has worked in various roles for blue chip companies in manufacturing, IT services, retail, recruitment, utilities and telecoms. Her roles have included IT Trainer, Customer Training Project Manager, IT Training Centre Manager, HR Consultant, Executive Search Consultant, Business Process Analyst and Business Analysis Manager. In 2009 she became involved in the Manchester branch of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, and now holds the role of Secretary for the branch. Sue s passion is Business Analysis the type of work it involves and the major impact it has on business innovation and profitability. MMU Sowing the Seed: Careers in Computational Intelligence 6

7 Panel Members Bios Dr Annabel Latham, Lecturer School of Computing, Maths and Digital Technology, MMU. Panel Talk: CI Research in Education Dr Annabel Latham was born in Nantwich, Cheshire, but moved overseas aged 8 to spend the rest of her childhood in the Netherlands and Norway. After achieving A levels at the British School in the Netherlands, Annabel moved to Manchester to read BSc (Hons) Computation at UMIST, graduating in Following university, Annabel worked in the financial software industry in technical writing, project management, implementation and training. In 1996, Annabel joined the National Computing Centre to work as a senior product manager for Higher Education courses, responsible for all areas of development and marketing, including responsibility for publishing and marketing academic texts. She has travelled worldwide training and providing ISO 9001 quality assurance consultation services to numerous colleges in the Far East. Annabel achieved an Advanced Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing in 2000, and has worked in the field of Academic Marketing for eight years variously as a technical author, project manager, lecturer and tutor. Following four years experience as Admissions Tutor within MMU Foundation Year, Annabel returned to study gaining an MSc with Distinction in Computing in 2007 from MMU, followed by PhD research in Artificial Intelligence under Dr Keeley Crockett at MMU. Annabel was awarded her doctorate in December 2011 and worked in the School of Computing, Mathematics and Digital Technology at MMU tutoring first and final year students. Annabel then worked as Lecturer in Multi-Agent Systems at The University of Liverpool until January 2013, when she returned to MMU as Lecturer in Information Systems. Annabel s intelligent conversational computer tutor Oscar is used in several final year units as she continues her research into socially intelligent agents. 8 Miss Elizabeth Chesters, Finial Year Student, School of Computing, Maths and Digital Technology, MMU Panel Talk: My Defining Year Miss Elizabeth Chesters is a third year Computer Science student, with interests in photography and dancing. She has a hope to later do a Masters in HCI for front-end development. She is also the treasurer for the MMU's Computing Society and is a STEMNet Ambassador for the Museum of Science and industry. "To me, development can be the most frustrating thing in the world, but it's worth every second." MMU Sowing the Seed: Careers in Computational Intelligence 8

9 Sara Krenický, Social Entrepreneur Panel Talk: Tailor your own business suit - How to set up your own business" Sara has graduated (Master's equiv. degree) in Information Management and Engineering, a joint subject of study by two departments: the Department of Economics and Management and the Department of Informatics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. Since spring 2013 she is the BCS Women Representative of the Manchester branch of the BCS - The Chartered Institute for IT. Sara is currently also a student at the Start-Up programme in Salford of the Lloyds Bank Social Entrepreneurs Programme which is provided by the School for Social Entrepreneurs, who are funded by Lloyds Bank and the Big Lottery Fund. Ms Kate Johnson, Business Intelligence Developer Panel Talk: TBC Katie Johnson is a Business Intelligence Software Engineer for McKesson UK. She studied Computer Science at Manchester Metropolitan University and during her final year worked three days a week for McKesson. During her studies she completed an industrial placement at Merseycare NHS Trust, which she credits to giving her the experience and skills needed to be a sought after candidate for various roles within the field. She is keen to encourage interest in the field of BI and health informatics, as well developing innovative technologies in healthcare. Katie is a vocal promoter of Women in Science and Technology and is passionate about equality in the workplace. Katie currently lives in Manchester with her partner Andrew, and her dog Molly.
