1 Department of Environmental Science and Technology MSc in Energy Resource Management Vision and Mission of the Department Vision The establishment of an internationally recognized Department in the field of Environmental Science and Technology which provides high quality education and performs innovative basic and applied research and which is able to attract and retain outstanding students and faculty. Mission To provide high quality education in the field of Environmental Sciences and Technology. To promote basic and applied research in the field of Environmental Sciences and Technology. To establish and maintain close association with relevant environmental issues, competent authorities, the private sector, NGOs and local communities. To facilitate international cooperation, the mobility of students, researchers and academics. Targets of the MSc in Energy Resource Management The basic targets of the MSc in Energy Resource Management are the following: Understanding of advanced environmental and energy related issues and their repercussions on quality of life and social development. Provide integrated education and understanding of the basic principles governing energy resource management. Provide advanced education on specific energy related issues such as the management of renewable energy resources and the management and storage of petroleum products and natural gas. Determination of the scientific issues resulting from an integrated analysis, taking in consideration various space and/or time restrictions. Design and implementation of independent environmental and energy studies based on international academic standards. Development of strategies for the confrontation of environmental and energy related problems and sustainability issues. The MSc in Energy resource Management addresses graduates from recognized Highest Education Institutions (HEI) coming from a wide spectrum of sciences such as Environmental Science and Technology, Chemical, Civil, Mechanical and Environmental Engineering, Chemistry and Physics.

3 Involved Teaching Staff Costas N. Costa Associate Professor Coordinator of MSc in Energy resource Management Dr. Costa is an Associate Professor at the Department of Environmental Management of the School of Geotechnical Sciences and Environmental Management. He has obtained his BSc and MSc in Chemistry and his PhD in Environmental Catalysis from the University of Cyprus. During his Academic Career he has obtained several National and International honors and awards for his academic and research achievements. Very recently he has received an Honor from the Denmark Royal Academy of Sciences for the development of a Novel Sustainable de-pollution technology. He has worked as a Research Fellow at the University of Manchester, Institute of Technology (UMIST) and as a Postdoctoral Fellow, Visiting Lecturer and Assistant Professor at the University of Cyprus (Department of Chemistry). Dr. Costa has more than 40 publications in High Impact, International, Refereed Journals, while he also has over 45 publications in International Conferences Proceedings, where he participated for presentation of his research. He is currently the Coordinator of six (6) Research Projects, while he participated in more than 25 Research Projects (European, UNOPs, Leonardo, Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation) as a post-graduate student and a senior investigator. He owns six (6) patents (European, USA, Japan) for the Development of Novel Technologies for the Reduction of Nitrogen Oxides (NO X) with bio-ethanol and/or hydrogen. Part of the Intellectual Rights of the latter technology has been licensed to the largest Company in the field De-pollution Technologies, worldwide. The latter patented technology is expected to be commercialized (by means of a novel environmental application) within the next three to five years. Research Interests: His research interests focus in the area of Environmental De-pollution. In particular, Environmental Catalysis, Gaseous Waste and Wastewater De-pollution, Solid Wastes Treatment and Disposal, Pollution Prevention and Environmental Processes Automation. Theodoros Zachariadis Assistant Professor Theodoros Zachariadis holds a Diploma and a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. His postdoctoral work focused on the economic analysis of energy and environmental issues. He has worked as a researcher at the National Technical University of Athens and as a European Marie Curie fellow at the Economics Research Centre of the University of Cyprus. He has taught at two Universities in Greece and at the University of Cyprus. Currently he is an Assistant Professor at the Cyprus University of Technology, teaching environmental economics and natural resource management. He is also a Member of the Standing Committee for Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences of the European Science Foundation. He is the recipient of the 2009 Research Prize "Nicos Symeonides" from the Research Promotion Foundation of the Republic of Cyprus. He is an associate editor of the international Journal "Energy Economics" and a country representative of the European Association of Environmental and Research Economists. Research interests: Economics of energy, environment and exhaustible natural resources, energy and environmental impacts of transportation, energy and water policy, water footprint. Alexandros Charalambides Assistant Professor Dr Alexandros Charalambides is a Mechanical Engineering graduate and holds a PhD from Imperial College London. His PhD project was funded by Honda R & D Co, Ltd of Japan. He has worked at Imperial College London, at the University of Tokyo and on his return to Cyprus, at the Energy Service of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism. In 2009, he was appointed a Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology of the Cyprus University of Technology. His research interests are focused on experimental fluid dynamics and their adaptation to non-traditional energy systems, as well as on the creation of a proper policy in Cyprus for tackling climate change. In particular he is working on: - Studies on energy saving measures and on the use of renewable energy. - Improving Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Engines. - Energy production from swine waste using algae. - The impact of local weather conditions on solar energy Despina Kyprianou Serghides Lecturer

4 Dr Serghides carries out research in Architecture, Energy and Environment. She studied Architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture (AA) London, UK. She continued postgraduate studies in Planning at the Planning Department of the AA. Also from the AA she obtained her Master and Doctorate in Architecture Energy & Environment. She is the president of the International Solar Energy Society of Cyprus (ISES), member of the executive Committee and member of the Board of Directors of ISES-Europe of which she was the president. She has acted as a consultant for the Cyprus Government and Parliament and has been the national scientific representative of the National Scientific and Technical Co-operations with Greece and China. She gives lectures at National and international Universities and Institutes. She is reviewer in scientific journals and international conferences. She has a lot of publications and she was honored with a lot of scholarships, awards and offices. She chairs and participates in organizing and scientific committees of International and National conferences, seminars and congresses of which she is invited plenary or and keynote speaker and presents papers. She worked for many years at the Higher Technical Institute and has been involved in research working in the field of bioclimatic architecture and energy conscious building design for sustainable indoor and outdoor environments, for over 25 years. The results of her research for Zero Energy for the Cyprus House hit the headlines of the Cyprus press, and were reported internationally. The architectural design and concepts of her research have been presented and discussed at international congresses, forums and conferences and most of it has been published in international journals and proceedings. She teaches on the undergraduate programme the subject of The Built Environment and on the post-graduate programme Management of Renewable Sources the subjects of Energy Management and Sustainability in the Urban Environment, Sustainability in the Built Environment and Energy Efficiency and Energy Auditing. She is the scientific coordinator of the EC MED programme, TEENERGY- Energy Efficient Schools and in the research project (ENAK-TEPAK, Energy Efficiency of Academic-Educational Buildings). She participates in the Marie Curie SOLNET programme of which she is a member of the three member Consulting Committee and gives lectures on the doctorate course Renewable Energies & Energy Efficiency (SOLNET-Kassel University, Germany). She was also the scientific coordinator of the 6th FW programme Low Energy Hotels for Southern Europe and of the EC 5th FW programme Brundtland Cities Energy Network. Maria G. Antoniou Lecturer Dr. Maria G. Antoniou is a Lecturer at the Department of Environmental Science and Technology of the Cyprus University of Technology. She has a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Cyprus (2002) and has completed the PhD Water Quality Program of the University of Cincinnati in March During her PhD tenure, she served as a Guest Visitor at the USEPA in Cincinnati, were she performed experiments for her thesis work. Dr. Antoniou also worked as a Post-doctoral Fellow at DTU-Environment (2 year appointment) of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). During her doctoral and Post-doctoral tenures she utilized advanced oxidation technologies/processes (AOTs or AOPs) for the removal of emerging contaminants such as cyanotoxins and pharmaceuticals from water and wastewater, respectively. She has also performed intermediate studies and unveiled the degradation pathways for various contaminants (microcystin-lr, cylindrospermopsin and creatine) with hydroxyl and sulfate radical based AOTs. So far, she has authored 14 publications in prestigious environmental journals such as Environmental Science and Technology, Water Research and Applied Catalysis B: Environmental. Her research interests include application of AOTs/AOPs for water treatment, swimming pool-water and polishing of wastewater, utilization of tandem mass spectrometry for the identification of intermediate products following AOTs/AOPs application, and toxicity studies. Petros G. Savva Special Teaching Staff Dr. Petros G. Savva is currently working as a special teaching staff at the Department of Environmental Science and Technology of the Cyprus University of Technology. He teaches the undergraduate courses: Tools of Environmental Management (EST 201), Chemistry II (EST 106), Climate Change (EST 404) and Chemistry I and II laboratories (EST 101.E and EST 106.E). He also teaches the postgraduate lessons Systems and Tools of Sustainable Development (EST 502) and Air Pollution and Climate Change (EST 532). He obtained his BSc in Chemistry from the University of Cyprus, MSc from the University of Patras and PhD from the University of Cyprus. His research interests are in Environmental Catalysis (NOx, CO, HC and SOx de-pollution) from stationary and mobile sources, Carbon Nanotubes synthesis, Benzene Hydrogenation in Gasoline, and hydrogen production and use as an energy carrier. He has received several honorary awards and distinctions at a national and international level. Dr. Savva has 15 refereed scientific publications in international journals, more than 30 refereed conference presentations and has 4 European and International patents. Kostas Andreou Special Teaching Staff Dr. Kostas Andreou is an Agronomist who graduated from the School of Agriculture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with a specialization in Plant Protection. He holds an MSc in Environmental Sciences from the University of Lancaster, Lancaster Environment Centre, UK and a PhD from the same university with

5 specialization in the fate and behavior of organic pollutants in soils. On his return to Cyprus he worked as a consultant in an environmental consulting firm. During the academic year he worked as a postgraduate assistant in the Soil science laboratory at the Department of Environmental Science and Technology, Cyprus University of Technology. Since 2009 he works as a Special Teaching Staff in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology, Cyprus University of Technology. His research interests include among others the areas of fate and behavior of pollutants in soil, soil ecotoxicology, soil remediation, management of organic matter in soils, environmental impact assessment, management of environmental information and ecological risk management.
