4 Here s What s New NEW PUBLICATIONS IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON BIOMEDICAL CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS This publication will cover circuit and system design issues in a wide range of applications found in biomedical and life sciences, with a focus on realizing ultra low power, mixedsignal electronics in nanoscale technologies. Examples of covered technical areas include bioelectrics, implantable electronics, micropower imaging technology, biomems, lab-on-chip bio-nanotechnology, gene circuits and molecular circuit fabrics, and information technology for biomedicine. See pages 9, 12, 18, and 36. IEEE INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS MAGAZINE This publication will publish peer-reviewed articles that present emerging trends and practices in industrial electronics product research and development, key insights, and tutorial surveys in the theory and application of electronics, controls, communications, instrumentation and computational intelligence to industrial and manufacturing systems. IEEE JOURNAL OF SELECTED TOPICS IN SIGNAL PROCESSING Each issue of this publication will cover a single topical area related to: the theory and application of filtering, coding, transmitting, estimating, detecting, analyzing, recognizing, synthesizing, recording, and reproducing signals by digital or analog devices or techniques with a tutorialstyle article supported by several, shorter articles. This journal will examine breakthroughs in signal processing at the nexus of other technical and scientific disciplines. See page 30. IEEE NANOTECHNOLOGY MAGAZINE This publication is targeted toward a broad audience including practicing engineers and students. The contents will include application oriented articles as well as tutorials, surveys, industry news, research news, education news, policy news, opinion pieces, book reviews, updates on people, introduction to new tools and techniques, funding and meetings news, patent summary, and commercialization. 8 IEEE Foundation Technological Literacy Matters! During the last century, society has experienced more dramatic changes brought about by technology than ever before in history. Just by looking around our homes and offices, we can easily see how technology is playing an ever-increasing role in how we communicate, sustain our environment, safeguard our health, as well as protect our privacy and economic well being. As the philanthropic arm of the IEEE, the IEEE Foundation raises and distributes millions of dollars for philanthropic programs that advance technology and education for the benefit of humanity and society as a whole. The mission of the IEEE Foundation is to support activities that further the scientific and educational purposes of the IEEE. The IEEE Foundation achieves its mission in two ways. The first is through the awarding of grants to new and innovative programs that seek to improve the world s technological literacy from childhood through adulthood. The second is by serving as the fund administrator for over 100 restricted funds that support a variety of educational, historical, and peer recognition programs of IEEE units. Each year, the IEEE Foundation continues to make strides in its efforts as it continually reaches out and touches more and more students, educators, historians, engineers - the world. Thanks, in large part, to the generous contributions made by IEEE members in their last IEEE dues renewal, during 2005, the IEEE Foundation: Awarded US$300,000 in grants to eighteen new and innovative projects; Invested US$250,000 in programs of the IEEE History Center; Expended over US$150,000 on IEEE programs designed to aid students as they pursue their education and research interests; Paid out over US$625,000 in cash honoraria and prize items associated with presentation of a variety of peer recognition awards. This is just the beginning. There is much more that needs to be done to ensure that the next generation is able to understand, sustain, and support technology s continued development. By making a gift to the IEEE Foundation General Fund through your dues renewal, you will be helping the IEEE Foundation be better prepared to support IEEE activities now and into the future.
