2 Anotace Studenti se naučí poznávat zvyky a tradice v anglicky mluvících zemích a v České republice.

3 National holidays are also called public holidays. They are called bank holidays in the UK and Canada because banks, and also shops and schools, are closed. Most popular are the Christian festivals, like Christmas and Easter.

4 Christmas in the CR is celebrated on 24 December in the Czech Republic. People decorate Christmas trees and put gifts below it. The Czechs usually have their traditional fried carp and potato salad for Christmas dinner.

5 Christmas in English speaking countries They celebrate Christmas on 25 December which is called Christmas Day. Roast turkey for dinner Santa Claus brings presents. 26 December is called Boxing Day.

6 Easter Easter is a Christian festival and it is celebrated in March or April. The symbol of Easter is an egg, usually painted or made of chocolate. There is a habit on Czech Easter, of boys whipping girls with willow sticks. The girls give them painted eggs in return.

7 Thanksgiving... is an American festival. It is observed on the fourth Thursday in November. It was first celebrated in 1621 when British settlers, called Pilgrim Fathers, had their first harvest and shared it with native Indians. Families get together on Thanksgiving. Their traditional meal is roast turkey. A common dessert is apple pie.

8 The Independence Day The USA became independent of the UK on 4th July Soon after the Boston Tea Party in 1773 the war of independence broke out. George Washington became the first US president in Today there are street parades and sport matches all over the USA. The day is finished with fireworks in cities.

9 Halloween is another American festival. It is observed on 31 October Children in scary masks walk from door to door shouting Trick r treat and get candies from the people.

10 Questions How do you celebrate Christmas in your family? What do you eat for Christmas dinner? Do you sing carols on Christmas Eve? Where is Easter celebrated? Who celebrates Thanksgiving and when? Which country became independent on the Independence Day?

11 Answers Our family gets together on 24 December. We decorate our Christmas tree and put presents under it for each other. We have fried carp and potatoe salad for dinner. Yes, we do. I love listening to my brother when he sings carols. Easter is celebrated in Christian world. The Americans celebrate Thanksgiving in November. It was the USA. It was founded in 1776.
