2 What are the new SMSF Auditor competency requirements? CPA Australia in collaboration with the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAA) and the National Institute of Accountants (NIA) have developed new competency requirements to ensure all members who undertake self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) audits are equipped with the knowledge and expertise to perform these complex audits. Minimum requirements have been stipulated for all members who undertake audits of SMSFs for the financial year commencing on or after 1 July 200. In particular, members must complete ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to ensure their skills and knowledge are inline with the ever-changing SMSFs regulatory requirements. What are the CPD competency requirements? Prior to commencing in the area of SMSF audits, all members must complete a course in audit of SMSFs that complies with the requirements of CPA Australia, covering these key areas: Client acceptance and retention Audit planning Controls evaluation and testing Substantive testing Forming an opinion The compulsory component can be fulfilled with one of the following courses: SMSF financial statement audit SMSF compliance audit Audit of self-managed super funds Members must also complete at least 30 hours of relevant professional development over a rolling three-year period comprising of the following as a minimum for each category: hours of superannuation training hours of financial/compliance audit training hours of financial accounting training The remaining 10 CPD hours can be made up of structured or unstructured training in any of the above three areas. It is important to note that not all CPD hours of the workshops and e-learning programs listed in this brochure will qualify for the new competency requirements. The competency requirement hours are delineated by the Allocated hours field for each product throughout the brochure.
