4 : Earth Life Physical Science Reading Passages LESSON 6 crust mineral magma igneous sediment pressure sedimentary fossil metamorphic rock cycle Vocabulary is studied in the context of reading passages with: Rocks are everywhere on Earth. Have you ever wondered where all those rocks come from? Read this selection to learn how rocks are made. Rocks When you think of rocks, you may think of pebbles, stones, or boulders. But did you know that a solid layer of rock covers Earth s entire surface? This layer is called the crust. Most of Earth s crust lies just under the water, soil, and ice that can be seen outside. considerate text design simplified type, line length, sentence structure, page layout graphics to support content, expand word meaning vocabulary words highlighted in bold type Soil Crust Ocean Inner Earth Earth s crust forms the land and the ocean floor. What Rocks Are Made Of Rocks are made of minerals. A mineral is something formed in the earth. It has never been alive. Minerals come in many colors. They can be hard or soft, shiny or dull. Rock Types There are three main types of rocks. Each forms in its own way. Deep inside Earth, it is so hot that rock melts. That melted rock is called magma. It flows like thick mud. Sometimes, magma moves toward Earth s surface. There it cools and hardens. It turns into igneous rock. There s a lot of heat and pressure deep inside Earth. They can slowly change igneous and sedimentary rocks. The result is metamorphic rock. 34 Earth Science Marble is an example of metamorphic rock. Book D Passages are written with readability below grade level. Science concepts and vocabulary meet grade-level standards. Granite is an example of igneous rock. Bits of rock are always breaking off from larger rocks. Tiny bits of broken rock are called sediment. Wind and water carry sediment to a lake or sea. It settles to the bottom and piles up in thick layers. The top layers press down on the layers below. The steady pushing, or pressure, against the bottom layers joins them together. They become sedimentary rock. Sandstone is a typical sedimentary rock. Fossils are often found in sedimentary rock. A fossil is the remains of a plant or an animal that lived long ago. The Rock Cycle All rocks keep going through changes. Old rocks break up and become sediment. It forms sedimentary rock. Heat and pressure change sedimentary rock to metamorphic rock. Metamorphic rock deep in the ground melts. If it rises to Earth s surface, it forms igneous rock. All the ways that rocks change from one kind to another is called the rock cycle. Rock Cycle Rocks are always changing from one kind into another kind. The rock cycle happens very slowly but never ends. My Go to page 95 to list other words you have learned about rocks. Have students find the two vocabulary words that belong to the same word family (sediment and sedimentary). Write the words on the board and have a student circle the igneous Lesson Summary A solid layer of rock, called crust, covers the surface of Earth. Rocks are made of minerals. There are three types of rock. Igneous rock is made of hardened magma. Sedimentary rock forms from sediment under pressure. Heat and pressure deep underground can cause igneous and sedimentary rocks to change into a new type of rock known as metamorphic rock. The slow but constant changes from one type of rock to another is known as the rock cycle. Activate Prior Knowledge Collect different rocks to show students, or have students collect rocks and bring them to class. Have students work in small groups. Give each group a collection of rocks to examine. Tell students to sort the rocks into groups based on how the rocks are alike. Then have each group explain to the class how they classified the rocks. Write students ideas on the board. As students complete the lesson, return to these initial ideas and adjust them based on what students learn about rocks. Introduce Target Vocabulary Tell students they are about to read a selection about rocks. Write the target vocabulary words on the board. Model the pronunciation of each word and have student volunteers repeat the word. Discuss the meaning of each word and, if necessary, write the definition next to the word. Present Graphic Organizer Provide each student with a copy of Vocabulary Graphic Organizer: Word Wheel, Teacher Guide page 77. Assign each student a word. Tell students to write their word inside the circle. As they work on the lesson, students should add information about the word on the lines, or spokes of the wheel. Then one day I was rudely pushed out from deep inside Earth. Can you blame me for becoming hard and cold? But I can change! I plan to get myself back underground. Banks close. Farmers lose their land. What happens to everyday people? How can the problems be fixed? Read this selection to find out what happened during the hardest times of the twentieth century. The Great Depression The good times of the 1920s did not last. Instead, they led to a period of widespread suffering called the Great Depression. A depression occurs when business activity goes way down. People lose their jobs or have trouble paying their bills. Causes of the Great Depression The Great Depression had many causes. One was speculation. Speculation is buying something in hopes that the price will go up quickly. During the 1920s, speculation brought big profits for a while. More and more people tried it. Some people bought stock, or shares in the ownership of a big company, in this way. The buyers did not actually have the money. They borrowed the money instead. Then, in 1929, the stock market crashed. The stock market is the place to buy and sell shares in a company. The prices of stock fell so Many people went broke when low that buyers could not pay back the stock market crashed. what they borrowed. considerate text design simplified type, line length, sentence structure, page layout graphics to support content, expand word meaning vocabulary words highlighted in bold type Farmers in Trouble Farmers also faced trouble. In the early 1930s, a terrible drought, a long period with no rain, struck the Great Plains. The soil dried up, and winds blew the dry earth off. Farmers could not grow anything. They were forced to move off their farms. 58 The Great Depression United States History: Civil War to the Present Passages are written with readability below grade level. Social Studies concepts and vocabulary meet grade-level standards. Suffering Across the Land Banks and stores closed. Companies went out of business. People lost their jobs. For many families, unemployment meant hunger. For some families, it meant homelessness, too. Help for the Poor Things began to change with the election of Franklin Roosevelt was voted into office as president. Roosevelt promised Americans a new deal. The New Deal was a plan for the recovery, or return to normal, of the United States. It put some people to work on public works projects. Public works are projects for the use of the public, such as roads, dams, and bridges. The New Deal also provided relief. Relief is help given to people in need. Relief can give jobs to people who need them. It can also help people buy food or pay for a place to live. The relief programs of the New Deal changed the United States forever. The government now said it owed people help in times of need. Blowing dust and sand ruined farms and caused deaths. Public works projects included building roads.
