9 Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, I am pleased to present to you a new catalogue of conference facilities in our region. I hope it will prove helpful to everyone who is considering choosing our Region as a meeting venue. The development of business tourism brings enormous economic and social benefits to the whole region. What are they? Hard currency inflows, new investments, development of community infrastructure, new hotels and conference facilities all these contribute to an increase in the number of workplaces. 10 GDAŃSK TOURIST ORGANIZATION Gdańsk Tourist Organization (GOT) established in 2002 in accordance with the Associations Act and the Polish Tourist Organization Act is a coordinating institution which cooperates with the local tourism industry and the local government within the scope of tourism in Gdańsk. photo: Remigiusza Gancarz photo: Remigiusza Gancarz GOT s objectives include: a variety of activities aimed at developing and promoting tourism in Gdańsk and the Pomeranian Region by means of promoting their scenic, recreational, folk and cultural assets as well as educating the general public about the region s history and achievements; integrating tourist organisations and local governments; running tourist information centres in Gdańsk; promoting attractions, landmarks and tourist products of Gdańsk and the Pomeranian region in cooperation with the Polish Tourist Organization; promoting the image of Pomerania as a region of great touristic value. GOT currently has 119 members among which the City of Gdańsk is a founder member. The Gdańsk Tourist Organization is the city s exclusive partner in all matters concerning the tourism industry. In 2005 the City of Gdańsk and Gdańsk Tourist Organization established the Gdańsk Convention Bureau in order to meet market demand and expectations. 11 gdańsk convention bureau Gdańsk Convention Bureau (GCB) is a municipal congress and conference bureau representing tourism service providers dealing with the business tourism sector. This sector comprises: hotels, travel agencies, restaurants, providers of conference technical support, transportation companies, interpreters and translators, etc. Gdańsk Convention Bureau s primary aim involve promoting Gdańsk and the Region, attracting new business events and promoting the brand and image of the city as a tourist destination on the map of global tourism. Undertaking a variety of activities aimed at making the city noticed by potential conference organisers who will thus be encouraged to consider Gdańsk as a venue for big events. On the strength of an agreement signed on March 5th 2009 with the Pomeranian Regional Tourist Organization, Gdańsk Convention Bureau has become an organisation responsible for the development and promotion of business tourism in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. Gdańsk Convention Bureau s main tasks are as follows: Expertise assistance, support and consultancy in the area of conference organisation offered to local academic, economic and sports representatives at both the application and the organisational stages; Providing promotional materials about Gdańsk and the region for business meetings organisers; Providing information about professional conference organisers, local service providers, conference centres and accommodation facilities; Preliminary booking of hotels and conference venues; Assistance in the choice of hotels, conference venues, catering and transportation services; Assistance in gaining the airline partner for your event and discounted fares for particpants of the event; Arranging 'site inspections' in hotels and conference venues for potential organisers; Arranging networking opportunities with local tourism industry representatives and with local and regional authorities; Arranging tourist information desks at conferences and congresses and welcome desks at the airport; Offering free help of our Volunteers while organizing your conference ('Volunteers for Gdansk' project); Offering special prices of 'Tourist Card' for conference participants; Preparing replies to enquiries about the organization of conferences as well as offers targeted at potential business meetings organisers. photo: Remigiusza Gancarz where business meets Gdańsk&Region 11

13 why gdańsk & region OVER A 1000 YEARS HISTORY Gdańsk is a thousand-year-old Hanseatic city with exceptionally intense history full of un-expected twists and turns, but also with periods of amazing economic and cultural development. Gdańsk is rich in listed buildings and magical places reminiscent of the old times and brimming with a multicultural and multinational atmosphere. LOCATION Gdańsk is located at the crossroads of the Baltic Sea routes with the Trans-European Transport Corridor No. 6. It is a major transportation hub of international importance with the deepest and one of the largest ports of the Baltic Sea. An attractive geographical location and the chance to have an active holiday on the clean Baltic beaches attract many Polish and foreign tourists. Culture & art Gdańsk was one of the candidate cities for the highly prized title of the European Capital of Culture The idea of freedom is a unifying factor between the citizens of the city and its artistic circles, thus invariably favouring the incorporation of art into city space. Gdańsk is a living centre of cultural events, the most important of which include: All About Freedom Festival, International Festival of Organ Music, Shakespeare Festival, International Street & Open-Air Theatres Festival Feta, Baltic Sail Tall Ships Races as well as St. Dominic s Fair a three-week festival which blends trade with a rich cultural and sports programme. THE CITY OF FREEDOM AND SOLIDARITY Throughout the post-war period Gdańsk has invariably remained the icon of the Polish pursuit of freedom. It is not without reason that Gdańsk is called the city of freedom. When the strike broke out in the Gdańsk Shipyard in August 1980 no one supposed that it would be the first stone in a landslide that would lead to the undermining of the post-war division of the world, the overthrow of the Communist system and the creation of the new order in Europe. This is a distinct face of Gdańsk, a city always associated with trade unions, the Solidarity movement and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the first President of the III Republic of Poland Lech Wałęsa. THE CENTRE OF BUSINESS AND INVESTMENT Both the city and the region have been experiencing dynamic economic development since the 1990s. In the Pomeranian voivodeship there are over 225,000 companies, 60,000 of which are located in Gdańsk. Owing to the high level of education in the area Gdańsk has been at the forefront of investment attractiveness among the major Polish cities and is number one in market quality rankings. Many companies representing various sectors have their headquarters here from the heavy industry to high-tech. The difficult history did not always allow us to preserve original works of art. The apparently old edifices standing here today were mostly reconstructed in the 20th century from the war damage. Yet they do have their value they give us a sense of the atmosphere of the old Gdańsk. The seaside location of the city has always fostered affluence and consequently the development of art. The interest in art on the part of the citizens and tourists alike is so common that Gdańsk s application for the European Capital of Culture 2016 was no a surprise. The citizens are so open to new developments that every new trend finds its followers in Gdańsk. The young computer generation might call Gdańsk europe.zip since it reflects everything that Europe has to offer, only sometimes in a shortened version. Free from prejudice, curious about people and the world, and always acting according to the motto inscribed in the coat of arms no impertinence, no timidity. This is the spirit of the spontaneous people living in this beautiful city. Big events organisers emphasise that what attracts them to Gdańsk is that it is a proud city filled with the ideas of FREEDOM. Free from fear of competition, the citizens of Gdańsk always say that they are from the Tri-City. The cultural achievements and artistic successes are the creation of the people living in the three friendly cities (Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia), whose borders have long been blurred. We are not in Gdańsk, we are in the metropolis to which Sopot brings the youthful enthusiasm of its students while Gdynia aims at success in business and attracts sailors from the whole country. 23 THE CITY OF FREEDOM AND SOLIDARITY Gdańsk is the cradle of Solidarity and the centre of events which were decisive in our nation s history and changed the course of world events by contributing to the collapse of communism. Gdańsk has always been associated with freedom in the broadest sense of the term. It is a unique seaside city whose long and multinational cultural tradition has turned it into a safe haven for freethinkers. Gdańsk is famous for tolerance and its citizens are renowned for the love of freedom. The word Solidarity and the legendary name of Lech Wałęsa have become the symbols of this great city. 27 ACTIVE & EXTREME A variety of landscapes places Gdańsk and the region among the most attractive locations on the map of Poland. Beautiful sandy beaches on the one hand, and forested moraine hills on the other. Such surroundings create ample opportunities to prepare an extensive offer for both culture and sport lovers. The waters of Gdańsk Bay create excellent conditions for water sports thus attracting to our region increasing numbers of windsurfers and kitesurfers from all over the world. Moreover, the Bay of Puck and the open sea attract sailors who perceive Pomeranian voivodeship as the Polish sailing centre. Active leisure is guaranteed also for the lovers of kayaking, diving, snorkelling and swimming in the sea. Apart from the sea, water sports can also be practiced on the canals of the Motława and the Martwa Wisła (the Dead Vistula) as well as on the numerous lakes of the Kashubian Lake District. Moreover, Pomeranian Voivodeship is a biker s paradise. A rich network of bicycle trails will satisfy even the most demanding mountain biker, while at the same time creating plenty of opportunities for family recreation. Another dream place for active tourism is Sobieszewska Island, which is only 15 kilometres away from Gdańsk. While walking here you can come across amber which is especially abundant in the autumn storm season. 29 Conference venues The Tri-City s long lasting popularity among tourists has resulted in developing the hotel infrastructure. Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot have long been renowned for beautiful stylish hotels which evoke nostalgy and attract tourists back to our cities. If it is too cold for sunbathing you can take a walk far from a multilingual crowd and ruminate on what the stones witnessed as it is only the stones that managed to survive the winds of wars rumbling through the city for over 1000 years of its history. This city has always been either an active participant or an initiator of major European events. World War II, the beginnings of Solidarity and the downfall of communism, they all reflect the rule of no impertinence, no timidity inscribed on the city s coat of arms. Even though not all the citizens of Gdańsk are familiar with the motto, they have always been able to take action in hard times. It is a truly amazing city. You do not have to plan your stay in Gdańsk only in the summer since every season has something to offer. The streets of the Old Town are equally enchanting in rain, in snow, covered with colourful leaves or in sunlight. With its modern hotel and conference facilities, as well as good airplane connections to Polish and European cities, Gdańsk is an ideal business conference venue. Moreover, the science potential of our region will prove to be an invaluable source of expertise help in organising any conference. In Europe, in Poland, by the Baltic Sea with Hel Peninsula interlocking with it this is us Pomeranian Region. The location by the sea has always been a key element in the region s development. Marine transportation has contributed to the industrial development in different parts of the region creating workplaces and allowing people to accumulate wealth. The well-being of our citizens has been a long-standing tradition. Hanza merchants, renowned for their wealth, were able to appreciate the unique climate of Gdańsk and organised, what we might now call, business meetings in Arthur s Hall. Respecting our tradition, we take care of the attractive conference facilities where such meetings could take place.
