1 Enriching Lives lacounty.gov Community C O N N E C T I O N whittier unincorporated community resource guide 2015 BOARD OF SUPERVISORS COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES Don Knabe Supervisor, Fourth District Dear Community Member, Please take a moment to review the many programs, classes, and resources offered year round for the Whittier Unincorporated community. Your local parks, libraries, and community centers offer activities for the entire family. Inside you will also find updates on exciting projects that are in the works; such as the construction of a new County Public Library and the Liberty Community Plaza. For your convenience an At-A-Glance phone and internet directory is included. Stay connected with the County!

2 community updates YOUR COUNTY LEADERSHIP The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors serves as your City Council. Please contact your County Supervisor should you have a County-related issue or concern. NEED HELP REQUESTING GOVERNMENT AGENCY SERVICES? THERE S AN APP FOR THAT CALLED THE WORKS! California is suffering from a drought so we cannot afford to waste any water. The good news is there are lots of simple ways to reduce the amount of water that we use at home, both inside and outside. The Whittier Unincorporated areas are served by four water companies as listed in the At-A-Glance Directory (page 17). For more information contact your local water agency or log onto the California Urban Water Conservation Council s website at Log on to these websites for easy tips and start saving water! Tips for indoors: Tips for outdoors: Look for the app at Download The Works for iphone, ipad, ios and Android devices. Available at the App Store. You can now take advantage of DPW s application called The Works to connect with their services as well as three other County departments. Since its initial launch, The Works app has been downloaded more than 3,200 times. Los Angeles County residents have already used it to report and track the removal of more than 1,360 graffiti tags, 650 incidents of illegal dumping, and the repair of 490 potholes. The popular app was recently expanded to include services from Parks and Recreation, Public Health, and Regional Planning, enabling smartphone users to request facility and trail maintenance at County parks and report health or other code violations at hotels, motels, apartments, and other properties. Users can submit a detailed description of an issue, attach photos, and provide contact information for additional follow-up. Service requests can be tracked and using GPS technology, the app determines the location of the service request along with the appropriate agency. If the service is outside the County s jurisdiction, the service request is forwarded automatically to the responsible agency. NEW TRAIL WEBSITE AVAILABLE DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION The Department of Parks and Recreation unveiled a new website dedicated exclusively to information about trails throughout Los Angeles County. The website is a one stop resource for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Included is information on a regional network of trails that connect to the Santa Monica Mountains, Angeles National Forest, San Gabriel Mountains, Puente Hills, Baldwin Hills, the desert and foothill communities, and into urban areas. You can now report a trail maintenance issue or concern through The Works mobile app (see article above). If you have a question or want to share an idea, you can also access a feedback form on the trails website or the Department of Parks and Recreation at trails@parks.lacounty.gov. 2 WHITTIER CONNECTION 2015
