It has been published especially for residents of the Whittier unincorporated area to provide important information on county programs and resources. Included in this publication is information on the recently completed redistricting process that resulted in new county boundary lines for the Whittier unincorporated area. also, read about plans for the new Whittier area Recreation and family service center and programs that are available through your libraries, local law enforcement, parks and recreation, senior services and more. (562) Redistricting Results in Changes to the Whittier Unincorporated County Boundary Lines What is Redistricting? every ten years, the united states census bureau attempts to count every person in the country. after the latest census, the population of los angeles county was divided as evenly as possible into five supervisorial districts for the board of supervisors. How was Redistricting Completed? a community meeting was held at the community Resource center on april 26, 2011, where the Whittier unincorporated community had an opportunity to provide input on the proposed redistricting plan. several plans were considered and the board selected one plan by a 4-1 vote. the boundary lines were redrawn and the majority of the Whittier unincorporated area and the city of santa fe springs are now within the fourth supervisorial District. Residents of the Whittier unincorporated community, who are on active duty, are eligible to participate in the program and receive a banner. for more information contact (562) WHITTIERCONNECTION

3 Community Updates Emergency Survival Guide Available Online the los angeles county office of emergency Management has published a guide to emergency preparedness intended to help the residents of the los angeles county unincorporated areas better prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. the county s emergency survival guide is now available online in both english and spanish at log on to the county s homepage and click on Residents, then unincorporated areas. you will find the guide under emergency Preparedness. Coming Soon! Recreation and Family Service exciting developments on the Resource center have taken place within the last year! Preliminary designs have been drawn for the new community center that will be located on telegraph Road at Valley View avenue, the former sheriff s Department training field (stars center). the center will be approximately 19,000 square feet and will provide multi-purpose recreational spaces for all ages, as well as family and youth services provided through Helpline youth counseling. several community meetings were held to obtain input from residents on the type of facility and programs best suited for the Whittier unincorporated area. Drawing concepts, resulting from this feedback, were presented to the community for this new state of the art facility. construction is set to begin in early 2013 with a completion date of the board of supervisors has committed funding for this project. this project is being designed by HMc architects, and managed by the community Development commission of the county of los angeles. for more information regarding the Recreation and family services center, contact (562) ENRICHINGLIVES 3

4 Community Updates NEW! stop by to see the new sculpture located in the courtyard of sorensen library. artist gerald Heffernon designed the sculpture specifically for the library. fertile Minds depicts a mother rabbit reading while her offspring read from electronic reading devices. a community contest led to the naming of the mother rabbit now known as books. Fireworks are Illegal in ALL Unincorporated Areas the los angeles county fire Department reminds you that per the los angeles county fire code , all fireworks are illegal. this includes safe-and-sane fireworks, within the Whittier unincorporated area including all county Parks such as adventure, amigo, and sorensen Parks. Please check the fire Department s website in July for a listing of fireworks shows that can be enjoyed by the whole family! Safe Surrender Celebrates 10th Anniversary (877) baby-safe established in 2001, the safe surrender program has now been in existence for ten years. to commemorate this milestone, families, firefighters, hospital staff and social workers joined the board office at the los angeles county Hall of administration to recognize the 10th anniversary of the safe surrender program. Parents or legal guardians can confidentially hand over an infant, three days old or younger, to any hospital emergency room, fire station or other designated safe surrender site, as long as the baby has not been abused or neglected. as of December 2011, eighty-nine newborns have been safely surrendered.
