6-Week Course Creation Adventure Colorado Community College Online
Terry Reeves CCCOnline Dean of Academic Instruction/ Interim Executive Director
The Decision During the spring semester of 2014, CCCOnline decided to begin a quest to offer 6-week short courses for summer 2014.
Questions that had to be Addressed Were students interested in these intensive online courses? Which courses would be best to offer in a shortened timeframe?
More Questions How would the retention/success rates compare with our 10- and 15-week terms? If successful, what would be our plans going forward? How would we get them developed in time for a summer 2014 pilot?
Sixteen 6-week courses to include: ART, BUSINESS, COMMUNICATIONS, ENGLISH, HISTORY, HEALTH and WELLNESS, PHILOSOPHY, PSYCHOLOGY, SOCIOLOGY, MATHEMATICS, NURSING, EDUCATION
Future Marketing these courses with degree plans so students can plan to complete their degree requirements in a shorter time frame Marketing these courses to 4-year students who need a summer course for transfer
More Future Strategies Putting more of a strategic framework around these course by showcasing Liberal Arts/Humanities offerings, CTE offerings, and Healthcare offerings Partnering with our system colleges to offer these courses in conjunction with their degree and certificate offerings.
Questions? Please contact Terry Reeves CCCOnline Dean of Academic Instruction/ Interim Executive Director Telephone:

Distance Education FTES Calculations Computation of FTES in a three-unit course with 20 enrolled students Four methods of computing FTES Weekly Census Daily Census Positive Attendance Alternative Attendance Accounting Procedure
Weekly/Daily Census (2 methods) Each student would generate three hours of weekly student contact as of the census. The computation of FTES in a traditional one-unit term-length (17.5 weeks) course is: 3 hours x 20 students x 17.5 weeks = 1,050 hours 1,050/ 525 = 2 FTES
Positive Attendance In this example, each student can generate a maximum of 52.5 contact hours of attendance if the student is not absent for any of the instruction. In this example, all students were in attendance for all the hours of instruction total actual hours of attendance per student X 20 students = 1,050 hours 1,050/525 = 2 FTES
Alternative Method The computation is based on the number of units of credit in which the student is enrolled as of the census. The computation of FTES in a three-unit term length (17.5 weeks) course is: 3 units x 20 students x 17.5 weeks = 1050 hours 1050/525 = 2 FTES
Noncredit DE Courses As prescribed by title 5 section (f)(2), noncredit DE courses continue to have only one attendance accounting procedure available to them. The noncredit DE procedure requires two census points (one-fifth and threefifths point in the length of each course) in which student contact hours and active enrollment are determined.
Noncredit DE Courses (cont.) The average of the contact hours generated at these two points is divided by 525 to compute FTES. Detailed guidance applicable to this procedure is provided in the Student Attendance Accounting Manual (Chapter 3).
