1 Colyton High School Trade School June , Volume 2.2 PRINCIPAL S REPORT With four more weeks of Term 2 still to go and the weather getting colder, it is important for all students to be in the correct winter school uniform. Parents and care givers who need assistance in providing warm winter uniform should contact the school and apply for student assistance and the school will support genuine requests where possible. We are currently investigating the possibility of installing air conditioning across the school to reduce the extreme cold conditions in winter and extreme hot conditions in summer. This will obviously take time and require quotes from a number of suppliers before installation can proceed. Although this will improve the learning conditions of all students it will not replace the necessity for all students to be in the correct school uniform. The wearing of uniforms assists all staff in ensuring the safety of the students and clearly allows identification of intruders. When students from our school wear clothing that is not the correct uniform it becomes difficult for staff to identify the enrolled students from intruders and results in staff having to question students about their uniform and if they belong to the school community. July 20- July 24 July 27- July 31 Naidoc Week Celebrations Education Week MORNING TEA Indigenous students and parents were invited to a morning tea on Tuesday May 26 in the school s Café, where Ms Parfoot outlined the significance of the day being National Sorry Day, upcoming NAIDOC week celebrations and progress on the development of the outdoor learning classroom. The outdoor learning centre being developed at the front of the school continues to progress with sandstone blocks now in place along with the dry wadi bed. The students were able to meet the dignitaries and learn about this wonderful project that will see a school built in Pozieres and provide exchange opportunities for students and teachers from NSW schools to visit and learn more of French culture along with the role Australian s played in fighting for the village of Pozieres. Aboriginal Morning Tea CHSTS students with Mr Eric Berti, French Consul General Aboriginal Garden THE POZIERES FRENCH AUSTRALIAN SCHOOL On Thursday May 28 Mrs Dwyer and Mr Humphrey along with two Year 11 leaders Rebecca MINELLA and Junior TUITA'ALILI MAILEI attended the launch of a project to raise funds for the establishment of a school in Pozieres, France. The launch was held at St Clair High School. The project is a joint one between the French Government and schools in NSW, working together to raise funds to build a new school in Pozieres a small village in France where thousands of Australian soldiers were killed during the war. 4 DEPUTY S REPORT In this edition of the school newsletter, I would like to take the opportunity to discuss two aspects of student behaviour that cause concern. The first aspect is inappropriate language from students. From time to time, students use a variety of colourful language with their friends and then forget when they enter the school that it is not appropriate to use this language. This causes conflict between students and teachers as teachers do not come to school each day to have inappropriate language directed at them. Students who decide to verbally abuse teachers will undergo disciplinary action from the school. The other aspect is one that potentially causes significant health issues for all students. Student s bathroom behaviour leaves a great deal to be desired. It is of great concern, in particular the male students who deliberately make a mess on the floor, toilet seats and sinks. It is essential that students understand that acting in such a manner, significantly increases the risk of health issues to other students. I am sure that students who deliberately engage in this type of behaviour do not do this in their own homes. I ask that all parents raise these issues with their children. On a more positive note, I have been working with a group of Year 9 Student Representative Council members on a project involving Bennett Road Public School in redesigning and redeveloping the park between Bass and Barr Streets at Colyton. The team consists of Casey Rout, Kaleb Mealey, Toby Breeze, Koshangi Patel and Andrew Gorgis. The project is part of the Mayoral Challenge and will see the park being significantly upgraded over the coming months. The Year 9 students are working as group leaders with Year 5 and 6 students and are developing the design that will be used by Council. The students will work with Town Planners, Architects and Designers in developing and costing the redevelopment. This is an exciting project which will hopefully result in a park better than the recently redeveloped Day Street shops park. A team of four Year 11 students will take part in a leadership conference at Penrith Council on Wednesday June 3 after school. The four students

5 are: Jessica Pabian, Madison Bonello, Emily Du Mughn and Junior Mailei. Penrith Council are keen to hear the voices of our future leaders in developing a range of services that Council can provide. I am sure that this team will provide some excellent input into this program. MR P. HUMPHREY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL YEARS 7, 9 & 11 Merci, Madame, delicieuse!, Oh la la!, Bon appetite!, and Awesome!. It may be necessary to have another food experience before long, for educational purposes. MS M POPE LOTE YEAR 10 PHOTOGRAPHY Miss Dore s and Mrs Johnsons Year 10 Photography class have been inspired by the works of Olive Cotton and have created some beautiful Still Life images. Well Done! YEAR 8 FRENCH Over the last two weeks, Year 8 French students have enjoyed a French breakfast. We have begun studying the foods of France, and to have some cultural immersion, had our own taste of French food. We have gone into the café (not usually the domain of Juniors), and been served a real French breakfast of croissants and hot chocolate. It was great! The croissants were huge, warm and delicious, and the hot chocolate was hot, sweet and rich. For many students, it was a very filling and wonderful breakfast. Thanks to Monsieur Brown and his Hospitality students for allowing us the opportunity to have our French breakfast in the café. 6 CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Toby Stevens of Year 9 on being selected in the Gymnastics NSW Mens Level 7 Open Gymnastics Team. He competed at the Australian Championships between May Congratulations also goes to Nikolas McLeod- Sieders who was selected as a member of the 2015 Trampoline Gymnastics State team. He competed at the National Championships between May 26 May 29. Well done to both the boys on their wonderful achievements. ID SWIPE CARDS Student ID Swipe Cards are required to be carried by all students every day at Colyton High School Trade School. Not only are they a form of ID while at school they are also used to swipe in late and to use the toilet during class time. Replacement ID swipe cards can be purchased from A Block Office before school, recess and lunchtime at a cost of $5. New students will be issued with free cards upon having their photos taken.
