About our Professional and Executive Programmes We understand that one of the greatest strengths a company has is its staff. Employers can drive the business forward but it is vital that employees have the skills, knowledge, and confidence in their abilities to enable a business to prosper. This is why we have created programmes to fit the needs of all staff, regardless of their educational background. We are renowned for providing high quality education with the latest relevant and innovative subjects to meet today s business and industry needs. Our Professional and Executive Programmes have been developed in partnership with engineering, manufacturing, technology and service-led companies for the benefit of both employer and employee. From the content to the delivery mode, our programmes meet the demands of high performing individuals wishing to enhance their education and skillset whilst remaining in full-time employment. Our approach to education is about adding real value and benefits to a company through its people. We offer an all inclusive package including tuition, accommodation and meals during modules, with flexible scheduling and study times. Our extensive pool of modules allows you to build a tailored programme and all of our modules are designed in collaboration with, and regularly reviewed by, our industrial partners. A number of our programmes are accredited by professional membership bodies and we also work directly with companies to build educational programmes customised specifically to their own business requirements. Our programmes offer unrivalled networking opportunities for studying alongside peers from a wide variety of multinational organisations, such as Airbus, AstraZeneca, Caterpillar, E.ON, UTC Aerospace Systems, Jaguar Land Rover, Rolls-Royce and Siemens. With variable start dates throughout the year and a number of pathways available, including short courses and intermediary awards, we can offer a programme to suit you and your company. Dr Stuart Barnes Director of Professional and Executive Programmes 05

Short Courses and Intermediary Awards Short Courses and Intermediary Awards Everyone s needs are different, which is why our part-time Open Programmes range from short courses delivered over a few days, up to full Master s degrees achieved over a three year period, with options for intermediary awards in between. Perhaps you are considering getting back into education but are unsure whether it is the right path for you. Are you or your employers concerned at the time you would be spending away from the workplace, or have you identified a skills gap that could be filled by studying a single module? Is your company looking to develop subject experts who could transfer their knowledge back into their teams and across business functions? Our short courses allow you to learn new skills quickly without having to commit to studying for a long period of time. All of the modules which make up our programmes are available as short courses on a standalone basis, with the option to validate your learning through a work based postmodule assignment. Our programmes are not sector specific, so you will be studying alongside peers from different industries but who are facing the same issues, which will help to broaden your experience and provide a wider frame of reference. Should you decide to continue beyond your initial short course, the credits gained through completion of any module (with post-module assignment) can then be put towards further qualifications. Fees already paid will also be put towards the cost of the higher award. Post-experience Level We recognise that not everyone will have taken a traditional academic path in the past. If you have no previous higher education qualifications, but do have appropriate professional experience, then we offer a range of modules as part of our Master s Foundation Programme which can all be taken as short courses. Each of these is delivered over two and a half days, with the option of the post-module assignment to validate your achievement. Our post-experience modules are designed to kick-start your management education and focus on understanding the wider business context, leadership and development of people. Short Course Options: Business Awareness Developing People Working in Teams Improving Business Performance Improving Manager Performance Financial Analysis and Control Systems Please visit our website for full details on modules and options. 06

Garry Clamp Quality Leader, BAE Systems Maritime Submarines I undertook a four year electrical apprenticeship and worked as an electrician before joining the Quality Assurance department at BAE Systems in BAE Systems already had a relationship with WMG and my manager had undertaken a similar qualification and helped me to realise the opportunities for development that existed. I originally intended to take just the Post-experience Certificate in Engineering Business Management (Master s Foundation Programme), but found the whole process very rewarding and am now halfway through the MSc programme, working towards my full Master s degree. In my current role I ensure quality hold points and milestones are implemented, audit programmes are established and completed and actions are managed accordingly, as well as quality planning and managing third party certification for various sites both within and outside the UK. Studying at WMG has helped me identify and tap into my capabilities. Quality cuts across the whole business, so having an understanding of the different disciplines and business topics has made me more effective in my role and furthered my career within the business. I would urge anyone who is interested to pursue this to fulfil their full potential. It is also important not to underestimate the learning you can achieve through networking with the other students and business representatives on the course. The whole experience has made me realise that there is nothing you cannot achieve if you are willing to put in the time and dedication. Short Courses and Intermediary Awards Postgraduate Level We offer flexible entry routes to our postgraduate level modules. You may have a Bachelor s degree, or an HND/HNC and suitable professional experience. Each module can be taken as a single short course over four and a half days, with the option of completing a post-module assignment to validate your learning. If you decide to continue further with your management education, you may build up your credits from each short course to earn a Postgraduate Award and/or Postgraduate Certificate. These awards can be in any of our six streams (core option restrictions apply): Engineering Business Management Programme and Project Management Supply Chain and Logistics Management Service Management and Design Cyber Security and Management Manufacturing Systems Engineering Postgraduate Award To achieve a Postgraduate Award, you must successfully complete three modules and post-module assignments within a twelve month period. Postgraduate Certificate To achieve a Postgraduate Certificate, you must successfully complete six modules and post-module assignments within an eighteen month period. These awards may be counted towards a full Master s degree provided the period from initial registration to completion is no longer than five years. See the table on page 23 or visit our website for full details of modules and options. Delivery and Assessment We firmly believe in practical learning and not lectures alone. You should expect to participate in group work, exercises and simulations as well as learning from the experiences of visiting speakers from a range of industries. Courses are delivered at the University of Warwick campus and most delegates attend on a residential basis, staying in our 4 star equivalent conference centre for the duration of the course. This allows you to fully immerse yourself in the programme without any distractions, and also provides excellent networking and discussion opportunities with your peers. Post-experience modules run from Monday- Wednesday, while postgraduate modules run from Monday-Friday, both usually finishing after lunch on the final day. Post-module assignments are designed as an educational extension to the module. They enable you to build your confidence in the learning you have undertaken and to apply it back into your workplace. They are also a requirement if you wish to build up credits towards a qualification. 07

Programme Pathways Programme Pathways Because we understand that needs and situations change, we have designed our programme pathways to be flexible and to allow you to study and progress in a way that suits both you and your company. The taught elements of our Master s Foundation Programme can be taken individually to provide quick and valuable learning experiences for individuals or teams within a company, or the Programme can be taken as a whole, to prepare you for studying at postgraduate level. For those who have higher education qualifications and, depending on the nature of the qualification, suitable professional experience, we offer a variety of ways into postgraduate level study. As with the Master s Foundation Programme, all of our taught modules at postgraduate level can be taken individually to boost skills and knowledge or to see if postgraduate study is for you. If you decide to commit to taking a qualification, you can enter onto either Postgraduate Award, Postgraduate Certificate, or Master s Degree pathways. Successful completion of each of the postgraduate qualifications means that you can transfer credits and fees and join the next level at the corresponding point. For example, if you successfully complete three modules and post-module assignments to achieve the Postgraduate Award, you may then join the Postgraduate Certificate pathway at the halfway point, completing three further modules and post-module assignments to achieve the Certificate rather than beginning again. The diagram below illustrates the various routes and the time required to undertake each option. Routes to MSc MSc entry routes 3 year MSc Entry via: Degree / HND / Industry Experience 18 month Postgraduate Certificate Successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate gains entry to the above course (90 credits) 18 month MSc Foundation 12 month Postgraduate Award Successful completion of the MSc Foundation gains entry to any of the above courses Successful completion of the Postgraduate Award gains entry to either of the above courses Key 4.5 day modules (10 credits each) 2.5 day modules (5 credits each) Company-based project (20 credits) 08

Master s Foundation Programme Paul Twigger Project Manager, Rolls-Royce My educational background is apprentice time served, with mainly in-house training courses. The Master s Foundation was my first foray into formal education for many years, but was absolutely the right course to get me back into education and learning to learn again. Through my employers, I was offered the opportunity to gain an external qualification which would develop me personally and add value to the business. There were a number of routes I could have taken with different universities in the Midlands area but I chose WMG at Warwick as it offered the best range of modules and subject matter that was most relevant to me both at the time, and thinking of future roles. The standard of modules, delivery and supporting notes etc has been excellent throughout, the material taught is relevant and applicable in real life back at work, and applying tools and techniques based on academic learning has benefited both me and the company I work for. I have recommended the same course and route to a number of people back at Rolls- Royce, and sent some of my team leaders on short courses (Working in Teams etc) to help prepare and develop them for future roles. I have recently begun studying for my MSc in Engineering Business Management and hope to complete in Improving Manager Performance Recognise the key role of the manager in improving people performance. Understand the causes and effects of organisational conflict, the legal environment within which you operate and the importance of valuing diversity in the workplace. Financial Analysis and Control Systems Basic accounting principles, terminology and techniques. Interpreting financial reports and contributing to departmental financial planning and control. Since 1998 we have enjoyed a close working relationship with the Chinese government body responsible for all overseas training; the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA). In recent years, courses have been developed for major organisations such as the China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC) and China Aerospace Talent Development and Exchange Centre (CA-TDEC). In 2011 WMG inaugurated a new partnership with the Beijing Academy of Science and Technology (BJAST), the largest group of technical institutes of its kind in China. The first course took place partly in Beijing and partly at WMG, and concentrated on aspects of Innovation Project Management and team building Courses are tailored specifically for each group of participants, and are delivered in two parts: a period of language training and selected modules given by WMG tutors in China, followed by an intensive period at the University of Warwick with modules, project work and industry visits. Successful candidates can be awarded a Post- experience Certificate in Engineering Business Management from the University of Warwick. WMG/SAFEA Alumni have now reached very senior positions in many areas of Chinese industry and government. In India we have delivered a major educational programme with the Confederation of Indian Industry in Mumbai, as well as creating bespoke programmes for companies such as Bharat Forge Ltd, flagship company of the $2.4billion Kalyani Group. 19

Industry Partnerships Industry Partnerships For over 30 years WMG has built strong links with industry and forged close strategic partnerships with key industrial bodies and government institutions. This has contributed to our ability to deliver programmes that are relevant to the needs of any forward-thinking company. We offer tailored solutions through our research and education programmes to those companies who want to change how they do things, bring in new techniques, or extend their capabilities. If one of our open programmes doesn t fit your requirements then please speak to us about how we can create a custom programme for your company. See back cover for contact details. Mark Bailey, Director - Services Function, Rolls-Royce Services are an increasingly important area of business and strong professional development is key in delivering industry leading services that are tailored to customer s needs. The Service Management and Design MSc with WMG will allow our experienced Services employees to put their knowledge into a broader, academic context and apply their learning back into the workplace. Chris Lewis, Head of Environment, AstraZeneca WMG offers a structured programme for people whom we see as having emergent talent maybe as junior managers and who could go on to senior positions. They will start on the strategic decision making module, which can give them a business concept, and from there they start to apply the tools and techniques they learn on the modules to their job. David Stewart, HR Director, UK Coal Our experience with Warwick has been extremely beneficial, not only to the personal development of the engineers involved but to the business in the short term through added value projects, and in the longer term as the capability of individuals and the organisation grows. 20

Luke Moseley, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Cummins Power Generation The most valuable and enjoyable experience of studying at WMG is the open forum approach to learning that is encouraged on the modules. The interaction amongst professionals enables great benchmarking opportunities. Iain Coucher, Former Chief Executive, Network Rail Our goal at Network Rail is to develop world class leaders who can take the rail industry forward. It was clear to us that WMG at the University of Warwick could offer us world class standards in leadership backed by the fantastic academic standards at the University. Industry Partnerships Dale Ballinger, General Manager Secondary Flight Control Systems for the Actuation Systems business within UTC Aerospace Systems Our people differentiate us from the competition and give us competitive advantage in the market place. Investing in our people through development programmes such as the partnership with WMG is critical to our future success. WMG s applied academic training is directly relevant to our business needs and allows for immediate application of newly acquired knowledge and skills throughout our business. Kevin Williams, Global Head of HSEQ and Security, Syngenta WMG programmes are a very thorough and cost-effective way of making sure our first-level managers are the best trained in the industry.
