4 Greetings from the NOC President Finland has sent teams in both Summer- and Winter Universiades since the very beginning and participated actively in the work of International University Sports Federation (FISU) through the decades. From 2015 onwards, the student elite sports in Finland is coordinated by the Finnish Olympic Committee. Developing elite student sport and sending teams to Universiades is now one of the NOC s elementary functions. The Finnish team in Gwangju Summer Universiade consists of 86 athletes representing fourteen different sports. Some of the athletes are already internationally experienced while the others will compete in the event of this scale for the first time in their career. Together with coaches, medical personnel, delegation officials etc. the total number of team members surpasses 120, making it one of the biggest Finnish Universiade teams ever. Having witnessed the development of international university sport from many different perspectives - including the sixteen years as a member of FISU Executive Committee - I wish good luck for all our athletes. In addition to the tough competitions, don t forget to get the best out of the unique atmosphere of this international multisport event! 5 Foreword Twelve years ago the Summer World University Games Universiade - were held in Daegu, South Korea. For the Finnish delegation those were successful games. After three consecutive Summer Universiades without winning a one single medal, Finnish student athletes were seen on the podium four times in Daegu. David Söderberg in hammer (3rd) and Esko Mikkola in javelin (2nd), continued the success tradition of Finnish throwers. Johanna Risku (Lehtinen) ran technically and tactically brilliant race in 1500 metres winning silver medal. Finally, Jani Tanskanen crowned the games with his majestic performance in horizontal bar reaching the second position. It was more than that, though, in Daegu. Women s basketball team did their comeback in the Universiade tournament, after sixteen years of absence, with great enthusiasm. Korean people seemed to be always smiling, friendly and polite. Finland was best known of xylitol among locals. The Korean ringtones were the funniest I ve heard anywhere before or after. Finnish team was packed with great personalities one could say artists such as Manuela Bosco and Olli Torkkel for example. Yes, those are all very nice memories and it feels good to return to South Korea. Winning and medals are important. I know it even from my own, more than humble, sporting career. Yet, the story behind the success or failure is many times even more important and fascinating than the actual result. In Finnish Universiade team you are allowed to fail, but you also have permit to succeed. Take a risk and try something new if you feel like it! Be courageous, enjoy what you do! 6 Greetings from the Universiade-alumni Taking part in the Universiade in Fukuoka -95 was a new and different, but definitely great experience for me. It was one of my first big international competitions and the first time I competed in Asia. I think participating in the Universiade is for many an important step on the athlete s path when aiming for the top in your sport. The setup is very similar to the Olympics. You re staying in an Athlete s village and you re part of a big team that consists of many different sports. I think that just being part of it all is definitely something you will remember for the rest of your life. I hope you have a great time and good luck! I was lucky enough to get that opportunity myself twice during my career and I m very grateful for those experiences. First time I was just a newcomer at international level and got invaluable experience of competing with the best gymnasts in the world and being a member of multi-sport TEAM. At my second appearance I was already a World class gymnast with some merits myself and was able to win a silver medal too. On my second University Games I was more experienced and I think I was better able to enjoy the atmosphere and get the strong support from the team that helped me to compete well. This July you have the opportunity to experience that unique multi-sport and multi-cultural environment and I almost envy you for that. I wish all of you good luck and best success in your competitions and remember to enjoy the experience also! 58 Hilkka Laitinen Finland s candidate for FISU Executive Committee Ms. Hilkka Laitinen is the Secretary General of the Finnish Student Sports Federation, and she is running for the position as Assessor on FISU s Executive Committee. Hilkka s story with sports begins from her home; with a sport enthusiast family. As a child she was encouraged to take part in sports and competed in cross country skiing and karate. That didn t lead to a career, but Hilkka s love to sports remained. Hilkka s enthusiasm with sports lead her to Presidency of Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) in After her Presidency she went to see the world from other perspectives in the Finnish Sports Council and Finn ish Parliament before returning back to OLL in 2010 as Secretary General. Hilkka s dedication to sport has led the Finnish Student Sports Federation to take big steps forward and university sport services have developed tremendously throughout the country. Hilkka has been a member in multiple national committees whose objective has been to develop sports in Finland. With Hilkka s expertise, student sports issues have been strongly visible. On an international level, Hilkka has been lead for the Finnish Universiade teams for eight times and has represented Finland in FISU and EUSA events. She is also a member of the FISU Gender Equality Commit tee. We in OLL truly believe that running for the Executive Committee of FISU is the next step for Hilkka and is also an opportunity to FISU to benefit from her expertise in University Sports.
