Competitors are required to demonstrate competence in the following areas: supporting the growth and development of people of different age groups, backgrounds and personal circumstances, care and nursing, and supporting patients' rehabilitation. Competition type The competition is done in pairs. Competence requirements Practical nurses are qualified to practice basic-level nursing, care and education. Practical nursing programmes equip students with the basic skills needed to provide support, guidance, care and rehabilitation to people of different ages and backgrounds in different life circumstances. Practical nurses can work in Finland and in other countries in a range of 10 / 15

11 different facilities, including homes, hospitals, children's day care centres, care homes, clinics, medical centres, ambulance services, different types of service centres, stores, industrial facilities, businesses, and as private practitioners and entrepreneurs. Competition entrants are required to have the competence equivalent to the core studies of vocational upper secondary qualification in social and health care / practical nurse. The following subjects are assessed in the competition: growth support and guidance, nursing and care, and rehabilitative support. Each task covers topics from different core modules. Finalists' tasks Finalists' tasks and allocated time The overall themes of Taitaja2014 are entrepreneurship, sustainable development, occupational well-being and occupational safety. In the Caring tasks, there is also emphasis on encountering customers and patients of different ages as individuals information management guidance skills overall command of working methods, tools and materials professional interaction fair play Competition day 1 (approx. 5 hours) Task 1: Sustainable Development Week 40p Description of the work environment and setting You will be working at the XXX children's day care centre in Lahti. The centre is planning a Sustainable Development Week which will take place in May. Your task is to design a programme for the week which incorporates the theme of sustainable development diversely across all of the centre's activities. The task is process-based and done in two stages. In stage 1, your task is to collect information for planning purposes, and in stage 2, you will design the programme for the week. Stage 1 Information retrieval You will meet with a sustainable development expert and an employee from the day care centre and collect information which will help you plan the programme. You can ask questions after the two experts have given their presentations. You will also meet children from the day care centre. 11 / 15

12 Stage 2 Programme planning and a written self-assessment You will design a programme for the Sustainable Development Week for the XXX day care centre. When designing the programme, you should consider its contents as a whole. Facilities Craft materials, activity/play equipment, musical instruments. Schedule - planning 40 min (in several stages) - implementation 3h 50 min (in several stages) - self-assessment 30 min Competition day 2 (approx. 3 hours) Task 2: Nursing practice at an in-patient ward 39 p Description of the work environment and setting A two-bed patient room at the in-patient ward of a health centre. Bed 1 is occupied by 48-year-old cleaner Aino Mallikas. Aino has been admitted the day before due to worsening asthma symptoms. She has daily PEF monitoring and a symptoms diary. Aino finds keeping the diary is frustrating. In the past year, she has had several courses of antibiotics for bronchitis, and she feels generally tired. Bed 2 is occupied by retired 79-year-old Ritva Saarinen. Ritva has DM II, which is currently stable. Ritva was brought to the health centre by her son due to her general health having worsened. Ritva has been monitored at the ward for a few days, and her condition has now improved. Ritva will be discharged today. Task Your task is to find out how Aino is doing and give her personal guidance. With Ritva, determine her functional ability and capacity to cope at home Facilities Supplies and nursing equipment. 13 - documentation 60 min - self-assessment 10min Task 3: A written assignment on illnesses and anatomy 5 p Competition day 3 (approx. 2 hours) Tasks 4-7: Small tasks at the competition site. The tasks are related to the following topics: pharmacological treatment and calculations, nutrition, anatomy, and a surprise task. The competition tasks are modular, which means that each day's results can be assessed separately. The total maximum score is 100 p. Evaluation The jury will rank the pairs by determining a score for each competing pair. The ranking is based on the CIS scoring system, with a maximum score of 100 points for each discipline (40p+44p+16p). The evaluation includes both objective and subjective assessments. The self-assessment component is delivered in written form. The competition organiser will provide the following facilities, equipment and supplies The competition area is 181 square metres, and there are two competition areas. The supplies 13 / 15

14 and equipment are specified in the task descriptions, which can be viewed by the competitors at the competition site on Monday 7 April All competitors are given uniforms (trousers and T-shirts), which they must wear during the tasks. Items which must be brought by the competitors themselves Each competitor must bring a name tag and work shoes on all competition days. In addition, competitors should pay attention to their overall appearance and appropriate clothing. Competitors are not allowed to wear piercings during the competition for occupational health and safety reasons.
