4 CINAHL Important Things to Know Because this is a paid subscription database, if you are searching from anywhere off-campus, you must have your my.emich username and password available to log into CINAHL. Although we own over 40,000 journals in full-text e-format, some of the articles may be in journals we only own in hard copy or on microfilm or microfiche. If that is the case, you may have to come into the Halle Library to make a copy the article. If the Halle Library does not own the journal at all, and you are a student, staff or faculty member at EMU, it may be obtained through the ILLiad interlibrary loan system. More details on all these topics will come later in the presentation.

5 CINAHL Advanced Searching This tutorial will cover how to run advanced searches in the CINAHL database. For more basic searching techniques in searching CINAHL, view the CINAHL Basic Searching tutorial.

9 Searching with Keywords Most of us are used to searching a topic in a database using words off the top of our heads Example I am wring a paper on the effects of diabetes in the pregnant woman. Keywords diabetes, pregnancy

10 Searching with Subjects Headings Subject headings are words that are used to describe the content of journal articles & other material in CINAHL and other scholarly databases/indexes Subject headings are also called descriptors, headings, and index terms This controlled vocabulary is specific to each scholarly database A list of subject headings is loaded onto most scholarly databases; the list is sometimes called a thesaurus CINAHL calls its thesaurus CINAHL Headings

11 Searching with Subjects Headings, cont. The subject headings in CINAHL are located on the blue banner that runs across the top of the page. Once you click on this link, you are no longer searching the CINAHL database, but in the CINAHL Headings list.

13 Searching with Subjects Headings, cont. View the subject headings that are displayed, and choose the heading that most closely matches your topic. Click on the Scope link to see a definition of the term.

15 Searching with Subjects Headings, cont. Place a check mark in the box next to the term that most closely matches your topic. The search must now be sent to the CINAHL database to be searched. Click on the blue Search Database box at the top of the page.

16 Searching with Subjects Headings, cont. Good search, but too many results! Let s narrow it down by intersecting another term into the search.

17 Searching with Subjects Headings, cont. The health administration search is a keyword search because we typed it in off the top of our heads without looking it up in the CINAHL Headings. Each time another term is added to the search boxes, the word and to the left of the search boxes intersects those sets together, and narrows the results. This search is an example of combining a subject heading search with a keyword search. The quotation marks around the phrase health administration tells the computer to find these words exactly in this order.

18 Limiting Results Once a search is run, the results of the search are shown, but the screen with the ability to set limits disappears. To bring back the limits screen, click on the words, Advanced Search, located underneath the search boxes.

19 Limiting Results Language and Peer Reviewed The Limits Your Results section allows you to narrow your search in many ways. The blue arrows point to a few basic limits. The next few screens will show you how to apply some advanced limits. English language limit. Peer reviewed journals limit.

20 Limiting Results Publication Year Limit a search to a specific set of years by typing the date range into the Publication Year from boxes.

21 Limiting Results To a Specific Journal Title/Table of Contents You can get really fancy and limit the search to all the articles in a journal, e.g., the american journal of occupational therapy from 2000 to 2009! A search for all the articles in a journal can be done by typing the name of the journal into the Publication box.

22 Limiting Results Research Articles Limit to research-based articles by either checking the box next to the phrase Research Article, or by scrolling under the Publication Type menu and clicking on the word Research. The limit works the same no matter which method is used.

23 Limiting Results Practice Guidelines To limit a search to practice To limit a search to practice guidelines, scroll down the Publication Type menu and highlight Practice Guidelines.

24 Limiting Results Review Articles To limit a search to review articles, scroll down the Publication Type menu and highlight Review.

25 Limiting Results Systematic Reviews To limit a search to systematic reviews, scroll down the Publication Type menu and highlight Systematic Review.

26 Limiting Results Meta Analyses To locate a meta analysis on a topic, type in the search topic, then type in the phrase meta analysis in any of the search boxes. Change the drop-down menu next to the meta analysis search box to MW Word in Subject Heading.

27 Limiting Results Questionnaires and Scales Limiting a search to locate questionnaires and scales is easy. Type in a simple search. Using the Publication Type drop-down menu, highlight Questionnaires/Scales. This search tends to be more successful for retrieving research collection tools than the one presented on the next slide, Research Instruments.

28 Limiting Results Research Instruments Type in a simple search. Using the Publication Type dropdown menu, highlight Research Instrument. If this search is not successful, try using the Questionnaires/Scales limit also under the Publication Type menu.

29 What is a Clinical Query? What is a clinical query in CINAHL? It is a pre-set search strategy which is applied as limit to a search to retrieve authoritative, relevant articles. To read more about clinical queries in CINAHL, follow this link: Then click on CINAHL Clinical Queries Help Sheet Depending on the search which is run, most of the categories, i.e., therapy, prognosis, review, qualitative, causation (etiology), produce the highest number of hits when the sub-limit is set to either best balance or high sensitivity. See the next slide for a sample search.

30 Limiting Results Clinical Queries Your topic is typed in here. To limit a search to some type of clinical query, go down to the Clinical Query drop-down menu, and select the category for which you wish to limit your search, i.e., therapy, prognosis, review, qualitative, or causation. Then select the sub-limit within that category, i.e., high sensitivity, specificity, or best balance.

31 Locating Quantitative Studies The easiest way to limit a search to quantitative studies is to type in the phrase quantitative studies in one box, placing quotation marks around the phrase. Next, change the drop-down menu next to box where you ve typed in quantitative studies to MW Word in Subject Heading. Type your topic in the remaining box(es).

32 Locating Qualitative Studies The easiest way to limit a search to qualitative studies, is to type in the phrase qualitative studies in one box, placing quotation marks around the phrase. Next, change the drop-down menu next to box where you ve typed in qualitative studies to MW Word in Subject Heading. Type your topic in the remaining box(es).

33 Obtaining Materials Using the Find Text+ Button Now that you know how to search the CINAHL database, let s talk about how you get your hands on the articles you located. The easiest way to locate articles is to use the Find Text+ button located under most of the citations in CINAHL.

34 Find Text+ Button -Clicking on the Find Text+ button allows you to see if and how the Halle Library owns a journal. -The button works using pop-ups, so make sure the pop-up blocker on your computer is turned off.
