2 Print Journals & Magazines The library currently subscribes to 900 titles. These are stored in the Periodicals Area on shelving in alphabetic order. The journal or magazine on the slanted shelf is the most current one. The area underneath this shelf stores the older issues. Due to limited space most journals & magazines older than a year or two are on microfiche or microfilm. How do I know what print titles the library owns? Use the online catalog referred to as the EAGLIT The URL is One can search by Title, Subject or keyword. 2

8 Databases The library subscribes to 110 databases. Subject Matter There are general databases Referred to as Multidiscipline There are subject specific databases Business Education History Etc. 8

9 Multidiscipline Databases Academic Search Complete elibrary curriculum * JSTOR * Project Muse * Research Library Sage Journals On-line* Wilson OmniFile FullText * Fulltext database or Journal Collection Full Text vs Partial Text Full Text Database. A electronic index that contains full text articles for all citations in that database. Partial Text Database. A electronic index that contains indexing and abstracts for all of the periodicals covered by that database. It provides some of full text articles for the citations in that database. 9

12 Remote Access After selecting a database you will be asked for your Username and Password (this will authenticate you for a search session). Username is the first 4 characters of your last name plus the last 4 digits of Campus Wide I.D. (CWID) number. 15 TRUNCATION In a search, the ability to enter the first part of a keyword, insert a symbol (usually *), and accept any variant spellings or word endings, from the occurrence of the symbol forward. (E.g., teach* retrieves teach, teacher, teachers, teaching, etc.) What is SFX? At its simplest, SFX can link from a citation (the information about an article) in one database to the full text of that article in another database. When you see the logo in the results of your search, simply click on the icon to see a menu with one or more of the following options for that specific citation: One or more links to the full text of the article A link to run a pre-set search of our online catalog to see if we have a copy of the article in the Library A link to the Interlibrary Loan request page where most fields are already filled in to request the article (allow 2 weeks to receive) Various help options SFX saves you time you no longer need to write down a citation and then search the online catalog to see if the Library owns a copy. 29 Steps to Locate Journal Articles on a subject Use a database (electronic index) Start with a broad subject Use Boolean Operators (And, Or, Not) to narrow the search If you find the perfect article, locate the subject headings/descriptors then search by them, or use the find more like this feature Remember to refine by dates and/or peer review If database has Full-text Links to the article will appear with the citation information Print, save or article 29

Use see if we have a print copy (EAGLIT) link to search the card catalog If the library does not own the journal and it is not available online. Use Document Delivery (Interlibrary Loan.) No full-text or SFX link Open an additional Brower Window Go to Select the Full text journals (SFX) link Search for the Journal Title that contains the article. Or select the CitationFinder Tab Check to see if the library has a paper copy Go to Search for the Journal title that contains the article. 30
