Introduction PhD Study funded by SMERC My interests: How a workplace learning environment is created how people work well together what influences career choice/workplace choice how leadership emerges within the workplace
Study Background Leadership development for medical trainees in UK (1 3) Competency framework Leadership and Management for all doctors
Current Leadership Theory (4,5) Historically individualistic e.g. Great man theory Current thinking: Leadership involves influence, is relational and is a social process
Social Identity Theory and Leadership (5,6) US Social identity refers to an individuals sense of belonging to a group and it is this shared sense of us that is central to the social influence that lies at the heart of effective leadership (5) Leaders need to be skilled entrepreneurs and embedders of that groups identity (5)
Current Leadership Research Individual focussed Often current leaders A mismatch between theory and research and practices
Study Aim Drawing on social identity theory, the aim of this PhD study is to explore the emergence of leadership involving medical trainees within the context of an inter professional workplace learning environment.
Study 1: Phenomenological approach lived experience (7,8) Maximum variation sampling Focus groups audio recorded Will analyse what they say and also how they say it (9) Theoretical lens for analysis will depend on the data
Research Questions 1. What do medical trainees understand by the term leadership? 2. What are medical trainees experiences of leadership and followership? 3. What are medical trainees perceptions of need in relation to leadership development?
Study 2 Use of video reflexivity methodology (10) Will be strongly influenced by study 1 Research process to be confirmed
Proposed research questions for this stage 1. How does leadership emerge in the inter professional workplace learning environment, and how do individual, relational, contextual and material factors, influence this emergence? 2. To what extent do video reflexivity techniques facilitate leadership development in the inter professional workplace learning environment?
Impact: Cross cuts the 2 research themes of Workforce and Workplace Learning environment May serve to inform policy makers and education providers about leadership development best practices
Feedback and Questions. Thank you
