1 Interim Event Report I m an Engineer, Get me out of here I m a Scientist, Get me out of here has been running since March Many engineers have taken part in that event, but many more have but put off by the name and focus on science. In March 2011 Gallomanor were awarded a 30,000 Ingenious Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering to create I m an Engineer, Get me out of here and run 5 zones in March With additional sponsorship from the Science & Technology Facilities Council a 6 th zone was run.
2 The event ran from 12 th -23 rd March 2012 with 6 zones, 30 engineers and nearly 1,600 school students. We believe it was very successful: 1. Over 1,300 school students were actively engaged. They asked questions, took part in live chats and voted for the engineer they wanted to win engineers were actively engaged. On average they answered over 100 questions each and wrote over 10,000 lines of live chat between them. 3. A further 11,000 people visited the site creating a total of 150,000 page views. 4. The event involved D&T, Maths and Science students from year 5 to year The engineers came from a broad cross section of industry, academia and the public sector. 50% were from industry ranging from small consultancies to large multinational corporations like Thales and Jaguar/Land Rover. %0% of engineers worked in Government, Academia and the Public Sector and ranged from Royal Navy Weapons Officers to a Project Leader at the British Antarctic Survey. 6. Students were very interested in engineering as a career, asking all about what the job involves, what it s like to be an engineer, what the pay s like, what qualifications are needed. Some of the most popular keywords include Advice, Career, Education, Engineer, Engineering, Future, Job, Time and Work. 7. Discussions ranged from research at CERN to questions about the origins of Earth and space. 8. Engineers were very positive about their experience. 100% of engineers who gave feedback would recommend taking part to a colleague and want to do more public engagement. 93% are now more confident about communicating their work. 9. Students and teachers were very positive about their experience. All students surveyed enjoyed taking part and 94% now understand what engineers do better. 62% of students used the site at home as well as at school. 89% of teachers think their students are now more aware of how their studies relate to the real work, and have a more positive view of STEM subjects.

4 Popular topics covered: The most popular topic in questions and live chats was engineering as a career. Students took the opportunity to ask the engineers all about their jobs Is it fun being an engineer? How much do you earn as an engineer? What s the best part of being an engineer? Do you need good grades to be an engineer? Is it hard being a female engineer in a male dominated world? The wordles below show the common words from live chats and questions across all 6 zones, with common words like and, hello and what removed. The most used words in live chats.
