1 AACC PROJECT BRIEF AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY COLLEGES AACC-PB-99-4 Service Learig Commuity Colleges Broadeig Horizos through Service Learig, By Gail Robiso The Commuity Colleges Broadeig Horizos through Service Learig project, supported by the Corporatio for Natioal Service ad admiistered by the America Associatio of Commuity Colleges, was developed to icrease the umber, quality, ad sustaiability of service learig programs i commuity colleges atiowide. It features model programs, atioal data collectio ad dissemiatio, ad a iformatio clearighouse. I additio, Horizos provides professioal developmet opportuities ad techical assistace through regioal workshops, metorig, presetatios, publicatios, a Web site, ad a cosultat referral service. Service learig combies commuity service with classroom istructio, focusig o critical, reflective thikig as well as persoal ad civic resposibility. Service learig programs ivolve studets i activities that address local eeds while developig their academic skills ad commitmet to their commuity. The Horizos project promotes the value of service learig ot oly to studets ad faculty, but also to college admiistrators ad commuity members. 3 Occupatioal Service Learig Iowa Wester Commuity College s service learig iitiative bega i the occupatioal disciplies ad is housed i the college s cooperative educatio office. I 1998 ad 1999, buildig trades studets provided early 4,000 hours of service for commuity eeds such as buildig a office for Habitat for Humaity, upgradig a local family emergecy shelter, makig a southwest Iowa ature trail wheelchair-accessible, ad costructig a rager statio i a couty park alog the Missouri River. The program expaded with the ivolvemet of professioal office careers, ursig, computer-aided desig techology, ad a local vocatioal high school. IWCC s service learig program received high marks from its state accreditatio team, ad will be showcased durig the atioal accreditatio process. 5 Service Learig ad Global Studies Richlad College s service learig program got its start i global studies, ad has expaded to such disciplies as horticulture, govermet, ad speech. All hoors scholars ad global studies scholars must complete a service learig project. The college s admiistratio provided iteral fudig for a full-time service learig coordiator ad office space to house the program. Commuity parters iclude hospitals, elemetary schools, commuity outreach ceters, ad a hospice for childre with HIV/AIDS. Studet service opportuities rage from workig with campers with physical disabilities to providig biligual support for a Dallas literacy project.
