With the assistace ad guidace of our experieced faculty ad dedicated metors here o campus, curret studets remai focused o their educatioal goals, ad others have graduated ad trasferred to the Uiversity of Marylad College Park. Dukes, Presidet, Price George s Commuity College Hillma Graduates Durig ad academic years, the program graduated a total of 28 studets from the Uiversity of Marylad. Studets graduate with degrees i a wide variety of subjects, icludig family scieces, accoutig, fiace, applied mathematics ad scietific computatio, biology, busiess, ad agricultural ad resource ecoomics. Post-Graduate Plas Hillma graduates expressed varied plas for their work after graduatio: Several graduates are attedig graduate school. Oe is erolled i UM s Real Estate Developmet Master s Program ad oe is attedig detal school. Other graduates are curretly employed i a variety of fields from hospitality to costructio. The Hillma Etrepreeurs Program provides Motgomery College studets with a kid of experimetal laboratory a place where studets ca take risks, where they ca be iovative, resourceful, ad creative, with the support of professors, metors ad local busiess leaders. The gift of this program goes beyod a fiacial impact, though that is pheomeal. The lastig gift is that these studets feel the support from members of the commuity who do ot kow them, yet believe i them ad their potetial, so much so they are willig to ivest i them. Future Dreams: As a Chemical ad Biomolecular Egieerig major, my dream job is to work for the Natioal Aeroautics ad Space Admiistratio or similar orgaizatio that egages i research i aerospace ad aeroautics. My favorite part of the Program is the vast amout of iformatio ad traiig that I ve already gaied as a Hillma Etrepreeur. I ejoy learig, ad the Hillma Program has taught me so much about etrepreeurship. It has also opeed my eyes to other importat aspects of persoal developmet. Etrepreeurship To me a etrepreeur is a perso who thiks out-of-the-box, questios the status quo, ad tries to fid ew ad better ways to do thigs. I always say, if you try, you ca t fail. 4 The Hillma Etrepreeurs Program Supportig & Developig Aspirig Etrepreeurs The David H. ad Suzae D. Hillma Family Foudatio created the Hillma Etrepreeurs Program by parterig with the Uiversity of Marylad (UM) ad Price George s Commuity College (PGCC) i Sice the, the program has supported studets who might ot otherwise be able to afford a college educatio by offerig commuity college studets scholarships that help cover the costs of tuitio ad books ad the supportig them i a seamless trasfer to UM i pursuit of their bachelor s degree. Now i its seveth year, the Hillma Family Foudatio cotiues fiacial support for the Program. Through these geerous doatios, studets receive scholarships, oeo-oe academic metorig, assistace i securig iterships, participate i erichmet activities outside of the classroom, ad a uique series of etrepreeurship courses desiged specifically to develop them ito successful etrepreeurs ad commuity leaders. Equally importat, the Program establishes a rich social academic etwork of likemided peers who will carry the legacy of the Program ito their commuities as alumi. Studet Satisfactio Studets are highly satisfied with the desig ad performace of the Program. Studets value the strog sese of commuity ad supportive eviromet of the Program ad view their peers as a positive aspect of their learig eviromet. Satisfactio by the Numbers Over 90 percet of studets stated that they are satisfied overall with the Hillma Etrepreeurs Program. Over 90 percet of studets foud Program staff to be accessible, resposive, ad approachable. Roughly 85 percet of studets agreed that the Program ehaced their drive to achieve. Studets highly value the required Hillma courses ad agree that through these courses, they have improved their leadership ad etrepreeurial skills. Program Expasio to Iclude Motgomery College I the sprig of 2013, the Hillma Etrepreeurs Program expaded its reach to offer erollmet to studets at Motgomery College (MC). 4 The first cohort of Hillma Etrepreeurs joied the Program i Jauary This expasio augmets the Program s efforts to create a vibrat commuity of studets that share a commo etrepreeurial midset, but have a wide rage of backgrouds, experieces, ad aspiratios. 13

5 Hillma Etrepreeurs Highlights Program Redesig Studets Cotiue Meetig Academic Goals The Hillma Program is desiged to support o-traditioal studets i obtaiig a bachelor s degree ad educatio i etrepreeurship. Hillma Etrepreeurs have geerally bee selected based o their demostrated etrepreeurial aptitude, with a emphasis o studets who have fiacial barriers to completig their degree. Studets academic records were evaluated o the basis of the miimum ecessary aptitude to succeed i the Program. However, the five year evaluatio revealed that the attritio rate at PGCC was too high, resultig i lost ivestmet by the Foudatio. Thus, the Program was modified durig the academic year to emphasize prior achievemet ad mathematical competecy as well. These chages sigificatly altered the Program desig ad goals ad have importat implicatios for the future of the Program. Fourtee studets graduated durig the school year, ad aother 14 studets graduated durig the school year. This brigs the total umber of graduates to 56. I , the average GPA at UM was 2.96 (compared to 2.76 average GPA i ) ad a 2.87 average GPA at PGCC (compared to 2.66 average GPA i ). Studet Academic ad Professioal Successes Several Hillma studets advaced to the semifial roud of the 2012 Uiversity of Marylad $75K Busiess Pla Competitio. A Hillma Graduate was accepted ito a competitive etrepreeurship program at Oklahoma State Uiversity s Busiess School. May studets cotiue to be admitted to UM s prestigious Limited Erollmet Programs icludig the Robert H. Smith School of Busiess, the A. James Clark School of Egieerig, ad the College of Educatio. Program Accomplishmets The Hillma Etrepreeurs Program was selected as a fialist for the Natioal Excellece i Etrepreeurship Educatio Awards by the Uited States Associatio for Small Busiess ad Etrepreeurship (USASBE). Specifically, the Program was omiated for the Outstadig Specialty Etrepreeurship Program category ad placed i the top three programs i the coutry for this category. The Priceto Review ad Etrepreeur magazies raked the Uiversity of Marylad as oe of the best schools i the coutry for studets of etrepreeurship. The Uiversity placed 18th for udergraduate ad 22d for graduate etrepreeurship programs. A subsequet Uiversity press release idetified MTECH ad the Hillma Etrepreeurs Program as key cotributig factors to the high atioal rakig. Specifically, Program admissios stadards have bee tighteed, with selectio ow based o the successful completio of 30 credits hours i commuity college, icludig the completio of a college level trasferrable math course. These chages are aticipated to improve the retetio rate of the Program, as ew cohorts will have demostrated persistece ad are more likely to be able to complete a rigorous, daytime-orieted Program at UM. at the commuity college ad two years after trasfer to the Uiversity of Marylad. Commuity college scholarships, which origially covered 100 percet of tuitio ad fees at PGCC for two years were decreased to 66 percet of tuitio ad fees for oe year, cosistet with UM s traditioal fudig level. It is aticipated that this cost sharig approach will make Hillma Etrepreeurs more directly accoutable for their success. The Program ow draws from the existig pool of commuity college studets who have already largely demostrated the motivatio ad ability to fiace their educatio by completig their first year i a trasferable degree program. Importatly, because these chages did ot take effect util academic year , their impact will be more readily observed i ext year s aual report. Still, this report will iclude studet demographic ad other importat iformatio related to MC s participatio i the Program begiig i the Sprig of Additioally, the restructured Program ow admits studets at two commuity colleges (PGCC ad MC) for a three year program that etails oe year 12 5

6 Hillma Etrepreeurs Studet Profile Hillma Etrepreeurs come from a variety of academic, persoal ad family backgrouds, but all share a passio for etrepreeurship, ethics, ad leadership, coupled with a desire to give back to their commuities. True to the Hillmas origial visio, the majority of these fuds are used for studet scholarships, icludig scholarships that cover two-thirds of tuitio fees ad books at the commuity colleges ad are both merit-based ad eed-based. The Hillma Family Foudatio also provides limited fudig for studets who obtai upaid iterships ad some admiistrative support. Geerous cash ad i-kid support from UM ad PGCC totaled $176,104 i These fuds provide additioal support for the Program, icludig a dedicated studet ceter at UM, admiistrative support staff at each campus, ad techical support for a combied olie portal page accessible by studets from all campuses to foster cross-campus ad alumi coectios amog Hillma Etrepreeurs. Without a doubt, this Program has provided career opportuities ad also supported me i pursuig my dreams. The support ad guidace of every Director ad istructor has bee ivaluable. As a workig adult, this Program has truly bee a blessig ad has directly impacted my success as a college studet. Oce accepted, studets are immersed i the Hillma experiece, icludig etworkig evets, specialized courses i leadership ad etrepreeurship, commuity service opportuities, ad fiacial assistace for iterships. Durig , 21 ew studets were admitted to the Hillma Etrepreeurs Program, each with a uique ad creative perspective ad each ready to cotribute their talets to buildig a better Marylad commuity. More recetly, the academic year welcomed the additio of 31 ew studets: 15 studets from MC ad 16 studets from PGCC. A total of 189 studets have bee admitted betwee Fall 2006 ad Sprig Curret Leadership Activities: I am a Trustee ad Fiacial Secretary at my local church. What has bee your favorite part of the Program? The trips! Every outig ad activity brigs our group closer together. I wat as a alumus to remai ivolved ad be ivited to activities. Furthermore, I value my relatioships with the Directors ad other Hillma staff, whose words ad guidace have truly ispired me. Academic Goals: I would like to pursue a Master s Degree i Public Policy ad to oe day serve as a istructor for a Hillma course that would be the ultimate thak you to the Program. Curret Career: Curretly I serve as a Huma Resources Assistat at the Departmet of Huma Resources for the U.S. Securities & Exchage Commissio. Future Dreams: Oe day Iwould like to establish a me s rehabilitatio commuity (a for-profit/ o-profit hybrid) that offers re-etry services to ex-offeders ad helps re-socialize them back ito society. Durig the walk, our team raised $680 for the Lupus Foudatio of America. I have also completed the Studet Pathways Leadership Program offered by PGCC College Life Services. Academic Hoors: My academic hoors iclude beig a member of the Hoors Program at PGCC, a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Hoors Society, ad a studet o the PGCC Dea s list sice Academic Goals: I would like to obtai my MBA i the ext 4 years ad graduate from the Uiversity of Marylad with hoors, with a GPA of at least 3.7. Future Dreams: My career aspiratios ivolve establishig a successful restaurat busiess that boasts a umber of chais throughout the coutry. Oe day, I would like my restaurat to be amed a must eat restaurat i the state that I live i. I also dream about livig happily with my family ad leavig my busiess legacy to my childre. How has the Program helped you i movig towards your dreams? The Hillma Program has helped me to aswer the followig four questios: who? what? whe? ad why? Specifically, the Program has itroduced me to people who share my future goals ad who will oe day be my busiess colleagues. It has show me what to expect i the future, as well as whe I should be expectig times of success ad times of difficulties. Lastly, the Program has helped me expad upo why I wat to achieve my dreams. What has bee your favorite part of the program? My favorite part of the Program is participatig i group excursios with fellow Etrepreeurs, whether it s a visit to the UMD campus or aother activity. Uiversity of Marylad studets have made their impact through award-wiig busiess plas, academic hoors, competitive itership placemets, ad graduate fellowships. Program staffers at UM help develop studets to be attractive cadidates for the job market or graduate school through Hillma coursework o busiess ad etrepreeurship i additio to collaborative team activities. As of May 2013, 56 studets have graduated from UM. Fosterig Itellectual ad Etrepreurial Developmet through Collaboratio Each week, UM Hillma Etrepreeurs meet together for istructio o etrepreeurship ad leadership, allowig them to stregthe relatioships while sharig ideas. I additio, UM has a dedicated studet louge for Hillma Etrepreeurs to iteract with oe aother o a regular basis. Studets also participate i team buildig activities. Durig , studets ad staff wet o a ski trip, participated i athletic touramets with other busiess programs, ad egaged i a variety of busiess competitios o campus. Such a eviromet allows studets to grow collaboratively. 8 9
