These European countries that offer tuition free education are of the view that higher education is a right for everyone, and the results of a highly educated population benefits everyone. This is why the Government of these countries took it upon themselves to fund education till now. Please note that the number of countries that offer these great opportunities for international students to study free used to be higher than this. But some countries stopped granting tuition free education to international students such as Sweden which stopped recently. 6
Lots of people have asked why Sweden started charging tuition fees and if the remaining tuition free countries will join. Here is the simple answer below: A vast majority of the European Union s member countries charge tuition fees and the Swedish government wants Swedish higher education institutions to compete on equal terms. Also, the government wants to use some of the money that finances foreign students fees to award institutions that have shown particular excellence. It is believed that in the long run, this will make Swedish higher education even more attractive in the increasing global competition. As for whether the remaining tuition free countries will start charging tuition, the simple answer is this: These countries have exclusive rights to charge tuition fees. They don't need to consult any organization or body before they do so. Hence, you are strongly advised to apply to them now before they change their policy and start charging fees.
