Please note that there are fields of study that offer only a few undergraduate courses in English (those fields of study focus on graduate studies). Exchange students should choose the majority of their courses from one Faculty. Within one Faculty, they can choose courses from several disciplines. For example, a student applying to be an exchange student at the Faculty of Arts, can choose courses in several disciplines taught at the Faculty of Arts. Students are welcome to choose some courses from other Faculties, too. Please note that depending on the course level, disciplines have the right to decide whether the student has enough previous studies to participate. Restrictions: - Economics, Psychology, Communication, Political Science, Veterinary Medicine and Law have restrictions regarding acceptance (both for local and exchange students). They only accept students who are majoring in the subject in question and have completed enough courses in the discipline in their home university prior to arrival. For Veterinary Medicine students must be on graduate level at the home university. - English Philology only accepts students majoring in English. Other foreign languages: student should be a major or minor in the language at the home university. These studies are considered case by case. - English courses offered by the Language Centre are not open for exchange students. - Highly restricted: Medicine, Dentistry. Web Exchange student are expected to arrive in Helsinki before the Welcome Fair starts. Academic Calendar Please list exact dates. Examination period(s) No examination periods. If there is a break between the academic course calendar and exams, can arrangements be made so the student may take exams early? (i.e. semester ends in December and exams are late January). Required minimum and maximum number of credits available through the exchange For both undergraduate & graduate The nominated students submit their applications online by using the online application system of the University of Helsinki, and include the listed enclosures in their application. If all the enclosures are submitted online, there is no need to send paper copies of the application. - Printed and signed copy of the online application form - Signed Learning agreement (study plan listing the names of the courses the student intends to participate in at the University of Helsinki, please see Workload for the amount of credits to complete; - the agreement is based on the previous year s teaching, so it is a preliminary plan) - Transcript of Records from the student s home university Yes, but the student can register for the courses after arrival in Helsinki when he/she has the user account at the University of Helsinki (the user account will be given durong the Welcome Fair). In Advance x Upon Arrival Please see Other important notes; Residence permit The University of Helsinki requires language skills in English, Finnish or Swedish that correspond to Level B2 on the CEFR scale. This can be certified by Language Certificate (pdf, 15kb) signed by teacher of English language of your home university; or TOEFL score 79 (IBT) or IELTS score 6. Language certificate is not required, if - Language skills, indicating a skills level equivalent to CEFR B2, are listed in Transcript of Credits - Your native language is English - You are studying at home university in Study Programmes taught in English (this must be certified in the application enclosures). 5 Is housing assistance available? How do students apply, and is it guaranteed? Not guaranteed, but the International Exchange Services of the University of Helsinki does everything in its power to ensure that all AEN and MAUI exchange students will get housing. Information about various housing options is available at For the students wanting live in a student dormitory, University of Helsinki has agreed with HOAS (Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region) on a number of rooms for incoming exchange students. Apartments are located around the Helsinki region. Students wishing to live downtown should choose their housing options accordingly. Housing options Exchange students need to apply for housing separately. They are advised to apply for housing as early as possible, e.g. submit their housing application around the same time when they submit their application to the University of Helsinki. Please see > English for more. Rent includes electricity, water and a free internet connection. Some of the apartments have basic furniture. Students must bring their own computer with an ethernet network card and RJ45 -data cable, and their own essentials. For more, please see i > English. Mandatory fees prior to arrival: room deposit: 500 (subject to change) to be paid to HOAS, Foundation for Student Housing in Helsinki Region, according to their instructions. Students should be prepared to pay the deposit when they receive instructions from HOAS. This can be several months prior to arrival. Are health facilities available at the university? Student union membership Exchange students are strongly recommended to pay the Student Union Membership Fee for Exchange Students ( 92 for academic year and 47 for semester, subject to change). Student Union membership includes benefits for students, for example basic health care, student discounts, student card, etc.). Please see: and See the website of Finnish Immigration Service Student health care Exchange students who join the Student Union can use the services of Finnish Student Health Service, which is open during weekdays 8 am-4 pm. Are internships available? Are student jobs available/allowed? Other important notes With student visa it is possible to work 25 hours / week. Please do not count of student jobs, because in most job there is a language requirement of Finnish or Swedish Residence permit - Students who are non-eu nationals need to apply for a Residence permit according to the instructions provided by Finnish Immigration Service Information regarding applying for a Residence permit is also available at the closest Consulate of Finland - University of Helsinki recommends that students submit their application electronically, because it makes the application process a bit faster. Students are advised to apply immediately after receiving their Acceptance Letter from the University of Helsinki. - Even if the students has submitted the Residence permit application electronically, he/she needs to visit the Finnish consulate in person to verify his/her identity and to present the original copies of any supplements needed for the application. Health insurance Students who are non-eu nationals need to seek comprehensive health insurance prior to applying for a Residence permit.
