GENERAL INFORMATION General Information & Purpose THE SEIU UHW-WEST & JOINT EMPLOYER EDUCATION FUND provides opportunities for eligible healthcare employees to improve their skills, move up the career ladder, and make a better life for themselves and their families. The Education Fund has three primary purposes: 1. To provide education and training opportunities for healthcare workers. 2. To enhance career advancement and employment security for healthcare workers. 3. To contribute to an increasingly excellent standard of patient care. We offer a range of education and training benefits to eligible employees represented by SEIU throughout California and parts of Colorado, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. To find out what Education Fund services you are eligible for, see below. Ed Fund Eligibility I m eligible for benefits from my employer, and past my probation period. I m a non-benefited worker (on-call, per diem, supplemental) who has worked for my employer for MORE than six months. You are eligible for all Education Fund programs & services! You can take: Classes & services that are less than 40 hours long. These include: Career counseling and career counseling workshops (pp. 4-5) Most Long Term Care classess (pp. 6-7) Some short-term upgrade programs, including most certification review classes. (p.10) I m a non-benefited worker (on-call, per diem, supplemental) who has worked for my employer for LESS than six months. CORE PROGRAMS & SERVICES CAREER COUNSELING AND WORKSHOPS One-on-one Career Counseling and group workshops are the first steps to identifying and then creating a plan to achieve your career goals. STEP PROGRAM (Success Through Educational Preparation) STEP supports students in prerequisite classes at local community colleges with tuition, books, fees, career counseling, and often tutoring. Classes include English, ESL, Math, Chemistry, Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology, as well as Psychology and Medical Terminology. Additional classes that are required for entry into an Allied Health or nursing programs may also be supported. NEW! Advance your Career (AYC) Provides training, books, and exam fees for short-term (less than 12 months) training for a new career, or to attain certification in your current profession. UPGRADE PROGRAMS Based on employer needs and designed to help employees move into high-demand, hard-to-fill positions such as RNA, CNA and LVN. Specialty credential review courses may be offered when needed. LONG TERM CARE CLASSES Programs and courses tailored for employees who work in long term care settings. Opportunities include CPR, Workplace English Skills, Computer Fundamentals, Medical Terminology, Customer Service, Team Building, Financial Fitness, Intro to Spanish for Healthcare Workers, GED Test Preparation, TEAS preparation program, and NCLEX Review program. JOB-TO-JOB TRAINING Provides short-term training for employees at risk of layoff. This program is intended to retrain workers for other open positions with the same employer. STIPEND PROGRAM Allows people enrolled in in-demand degree and certificate programs to reduce their hours of work (up to one shift per week) and get paid for their time. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES Continuing education classes that enable employees to obtain Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and maintain professional licenses or certificates. Courses include topics such as Behavior Management, Dealing with the Terminally Ill, Dementia Care, Stress Management and Alzheimer s Care. Learn techniques for navigating the school system, managing your time effectively, speed reading, note-taking and test-taking strategies. Come find out how the Education Fund can help you explore your career path and find a job that matches your skills, interests, values and lifestyle. HEALTHCARE REFORM & YOU We ve been hearing a lot about healthcare reform but what will it mean for your career? Learn about some of the major changes that are anticipated in the next few years, and get ideas about how you can stay ahead of changes. HOW TO PAY FOR SCHOOL: FINANCIAL AID, EMPLOYER RESOURCES, AND MONEY MANAGEMENT Do you know about the financial resources available from your employer? The Education Fund? Your union? Federal and State Aid? Scholarships? Come learn what s available and how to apply for these resources. LONG TERM CARE CLASSES WORKPLACE ENGLISH SKILLS This course is designed for working adults with limited English writing and speaking skills and focuses on communication used in the workplace. Topics can include: > Responding to Workplace Demands - Confirming and clarifying information, documenting work, responding to complaints and dealing with difficult people. > Workplace Culture - Identifying skills required for current positions and the next career steps > Safety & Patient Care - This topic focuses on language used in medical environments and will include reviewing forms, documenting procedures, clarifying techniques and reporting accidents. Professional Development Free, unlimited access to on-line CEU courses through Mariposa Training Center. Call the Education Fund and ask to speak with Long Term Care for an application. TEAMBUILDING Explore teambuilding and learn new ways to incorporate the theories associated with TEAM (Together Everyone Accomplishes More) into daily practice, and to improve patient care. LONG TERM CARE CLASSES and families in Spanish. Emphasis is placed on the practice of words and phrases common to the healthcare environment for safe and effective communication. (One day) COMPUTER FUNDAMENTALS This 16-hour basic computer skills course is designed for healthcare workers with little or no computer experience. Using a fun, relevant, motivating workbook format, the course introduces the workers to the basic computer competencies they will need in preparation for hospital-wide changes to computerized recordkeeping. INTERMEDIATE COMPUTERS This course covers the basics of key computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel. The course will also cover more in-depth internet skills. (16 hour course) FINANCIAL FITNESS Learn tips to help improve your financial situation, including how to use credit, buy a car or home and increase savings. Also includes an introduction to taxes, retirement and investing. (One or two-day workshop) GENERAL EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (GED) TEST PREPARATION PROGRAM Students work at their own pace. Program includes teacher led instruction, materials and testing fees. The teacher will recommend to the student when he/she feels that the student is ready to take any of the five GED exams. TEST OF ESSENTIAL ACADEMIC SKILLS (TEAS) PREPARATION PROGRAM College Entrance exam preparation. These workshops prepare students to pass the required test for admission to nursing and other professional programs. NCLEX REVIEW PROGRAM Master the ways of the NCLEX (the National Council Licensure Examination for Vocational Nurses or Registered Nurses). Learn how NCLEX questions are framed and review content in each area of nursing practice as it relates to client needs and integrated processes. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do my union dues pay for the Education Fund? The best way to start is to meet with an Ed Fund Career Counselor and make an education plan. Call 1-888-872-4606 to make an appointment with a counselor. Nope! Our funding comes almost entirely from employer contributions, along with some federal, state, and local grants to our sister agency, the Shirley Ware Education Center (SWEC). Employers are required to pay into the Education Fund through their contracts with your union. The Education Fund does NOT receive union dues money. I want to go back to school how do I get started? How can the Ed Fund help to pay for my education? We have a variety of programs, depending on where you are in your educational path. Check page 3 of this catalog (Core Programs & Services) to get a snapshot of what is available. For current hiring needs, you can check with your HR department and look at job listings. For longer-term employment trends, call 1-888-872-4606 to make an appointment with an Ed Fund Career Counselor. How can I find out about in-demand jobs at my employer? FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS I want to take classes but my supervisor won t give me the time off. Can the Ed Fund help? The Education Fund is a separate organization from your union and your employer, and cannot get involved in workplace issues. However, we can provide a letter explaining the Education Fund benefits which you can give to your supervisor. You can also ask your union steward for assistance.
